Promoting Healthy Eating and Physical Activity: A Qualitative Examination of Community-Based Obesity Interventions in Rural Kentucky
Rural Americans are medically underserved groups and are at greater risk of becoming obese than urban Americans. The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the perceived causes of obesity in six counties of rural Kentucky and to determine how to customize strategies to reduce obesity in these areas. University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service Agents formed coalitions in each of the six counties to assess their communities’ needs and assets to inform plans for implementing evidence-based obesity interventions. Between February and August of 2015, the coalitions were convened for a total of 11 meetings. Each of the coalition meetings was audio recorded, transcribed, and coded using NVivo 11 qualitative analysis software. Coalition members in these rural counties of Kentucky recognized aspects of their culture, poor dietary choices, and inactivity as the major reasons obesity is a problem in their county. Participants reported high prevalence of fast food restaurants, lack of access to healthy foods and physical activity resources, technology, and lack of time as barriers to healthy behaviors. These findings provide insight to inform tailored, evidence-based interventions for rural communities. Improving access to healthy foods and physical activity resources in rural areas may improve healthy behaviors and reduce obesity prevalence
A new clinical tool for assessing numerical abilities in neurological diseases: numerical activities of daily living
The aim of this study was to build an instrument, the numerical activities of daily living (NADL), designed to identify the specific impairments in numerical functions that may cause problems in everyday life. These impairments go beyond what can be inferred from the available scales evaluating activities of daily living in general, and are not adequately captured by measures of the general deterioration of cognitive functions as assessed by standard clinical instruments like the MMSE and MoCA. We assessed a control group (n = 148) and a patient group affected by a wide variety of neurological conditions (n = 175), with NADL along with IADL, MMSE, and MoCA. The NADL battery was found to have satisfactory construct validity and reliability, across a wide age range. This enabled us to calculate appropriate criteria for impairment that took into account age and education. It was found that neurological patients tended to overestimate their abilities as compared to the judgment made by their caregivers, assessed with objective tests of numerical abilities
Role of Nutrition in the Management of Hepatic Encephalopathy in End-Stage Liver Failure
Malnutrition is common in patients with end-stage liver failure and hepatic encephalopathy, and is considered a significant prognostic factor affecting quality of life, outcome, and survival. The liver plays a crucial role in the regulation of nutrition by trafficking the metabolism of nutrients, their distribution and appropriate use by the body. Nutritional consequences with the potential to cause nervous system dysfunction occur in liver failure, and many factors contribute to malnutrition in hepatic failure. Among them are inadequate dietary intake, malabsorption, increased protein losses, hypermetabolism, insulin resistance, gastrointestinal bleeding, ascites, inflammation/infection, and hyponatremia. Patients at risk of malnutrition are relatively difficult to identify since liver disease may interfere with biomarkers of malnutrition. The supplementation of the diet with amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins as well as probiotics in addition to meeting energy and protein requirements may improve nutritional status, liver function, and hepatic encephalopathy in patients with end-stage liver failure
Comments on "Wall-plug (AC) power consumption of a very high energy e+/e- storage ring collider" by Marc Ross
The paper arXiv:1308.0735 questions some of the technical assumptions made by
the TLEP Steering Group when estimating in arXiv:1305.6498 the power
requirement for the very high energy e+e- storage ring collider TLEP. We show
that our assumptions are based solidly on CERN experience with LEP and the LHC,
as well accelerators elsewhere, and confirm our earlier baseline estimate of

Jet Substructure Without Trees
We present an alternative approach to identifying and characterizing jet
substructure. An angular correlation function is introduced that can be used to
extract angular and mass scales within a jet without reference to a clustering
algorithm. This procedure gives rise to a number of useful jet observables. As
an application, we construct a top quark tagging algorithm that is competitive

Reactivation and Precise IPN Localization of the Soft Gamma Repeater SGR1900+14
In 1998 May, the soft gamma repeater SGR1900+14 emerged from several years of
quiescence and emitted a series of intense bursts, one with a time history
unlike any previously observed from this source. Triangulation using Ulysses,
BATSE, and KONUS data give a 1.6 square arcminute error box near the galactic
supernova remnant G42.8+0.6. This error box contains a quiescent soft X-ray
source which is probably a neutron star associated with the soft repeater.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letter
Innermost stable circular orbits around relativistic rotating stars
We investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle
moving on the equatorial plane around rotating relativistic stars such as
neutron stars. First, we derive approximate analytic formulas for the angular
velocity and circumferential radius at the ISCO making use of an approximate
relativistic solution which is characterized by arbitrary mass, spin, mass
quadrupole, current octapole and mass -pole moments. Then, we show that
the analytic formulas are accurate enough by comparing them with numerical
results, which are obtained by analyzing the vacuum exterior around numerically
computed geometries for rotating stars of polytropic equation of state. We
demonstrate that contribution of mass quadrupole moment for determining the
angular velocity and, in particular, the circumferential radius at the ISCO
