    Get PDF
This paper explored the predictive effects of distributive injustice on corruption and office abuse among police officers in Anambra State Police Command. The participants of the study were 294 (two hundred and ninety four) junior cadre police officers (below the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police) who comprised 241 male-police officers and 53 female-police officers. The ages of the police officers ranged from 26 to 47 years, the mean age was 37.51 years with a standard deviation of 2.20. Data for the study was collected with the aid of organizational justice scale by Niehoff and Moorman (1993) and Unethical Behaviour Tendency Scale by Tang and Weatherford (1997). Predictive design and multiple regression analysis were adopted as the design and statistical tool for the study respectively. The result confirmed that both corruption and office abuse dimensions of unethical behaviour were significantly predicted by distributive injustice among junior cadre police officers.  Article visualizations

This study examined the influence of personality and work-locus of control on lecturers’ organizational citizenship behaviour. A total of 204 participants (75 females and 129 males) selected through simple random sampling technique were drawn from Federal Polytechnics Oko Anambra State, Nigeria as participants of the study. Their ages ranged from 27 to 67 years with a mean age of 49.43 years and a standard deviation of 9.82. A cross sectional survey design was employed for the study while two-way Analysis of variance statistic was used for data analysis. The result revealed a significant main effect for personality at F (4,194) = 4.15, p < .05. Extraverted lecturers had more tendencies to practice OCB than open to new experience and agreeable lecturers, as well as conscientious lecturers. However, no significant influence for work locus of control (M=1,194) = 0.67>.05 with the internal locus of control participants (m =121.05, SD = 32.77), was observed on tendency to practice OCB than their external (M. 121. 64, SD = 25.41) counterparts. Also, the result showed no significant interaction effect between personality factors and work-locus of control on lecturers’ citizenship behaviour, F (4, 194) =1.08 AT p<.05. It recommended that Nigerian tertiary institutions use psychometric evaluation in lecturers’ selection process in order to take advantage of those more likely to exhibit citizenship behaviour.  Article visualizations

THEORETICAL CORRELATION OF AGEING, MENTAL ACTIVITY AND MEMORY RECALL: IMPLICATION FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL

    Get PDF
This study explored theoretical correlation of ageing, mental activity and memory recall and its implication for security personnel. Ebbinghaus’ experiment with the list of nonsense syllables in 1885 has created the awareness that a lot factors can influence brain behaviour; critically ageing and mental activity. Despite the abundance of empirical literature on varying experiments to expose the correlation of brain behaviour and other human behavioural outcomes, the need to establish theoretical basis for understanding these relationships becomes important. Using Two-Stage Process theory of memory recall by Watkins and Gardiner (1979) which emphasized search and retrieval process; and Encoding Specificity theory by Tulving and Donald (1973) which emphasized encoding conditions and conditions at the time of retrieval, memory recall process was reviewed as brain behaviour in the light of how ageing and mental activity (cognitive exercise) may influence it. Given the found theoretical linkage, it is recommended that positive valences which improve mental wellbeing and varying brain behavior be encouraged in the workplace to improve the quality of human output in the organization.  Article visualizations

This study examined abusive supervision and organizational cynicism as predictors of cyber-loafing among federal civil service employees in Anambra State, Nigeria. Three hundred and twenty-nine (329) public sector employees served as participants in the study. The participants were 147 males and 182 females. The age of the participants ranged from 27 to 53 years, with a mean age of 39yrs and standard deviation of 1.42yrs. The participants were selected through cluster and simple random sampling technique. Being a cross-sectional survey studies, correlation design and multiple regression analysis were used as the appropriate design and statistical tool to analyze the data obtained from the field study respectively. The result confirmed that abusive supervision significantly predicted cyber-loafing among federal civil servants in Nigeria at α = .51, p < .05 (n=229). Also organizational cynicism significantly predicted cyber-loafing among federal civil servants at α = .63, p < .05 (n=229). It is recommended that organizational leader-member exchange be improved to checkmate abusive supervision while increasing fairness and equity in the organization.     Article visualizations

    Get PDF
Infrastructural challenges in Nigerian Prisons which do not allow stratification of inmates based on crime weight have often jeopardized correctional efforts. Bearing this in mind, this study examined the differential effects of psychoactive substance use and interpersonal sensitivity on hostile behaviour of prison inmates in Anambra State of Nigeria. 89 prison inmates comprising of 73 males and 16 females were participants of the study. Their ages ranged from 23 to 44 years with a mean age of 31.50 and standard deviation of 2.45. Purposive sampling technique was adopted to obtain inmates with history of psychoactive substance use from those without. Symptoms checklist (SCL-90R) by Deragatis, Lipman and Covi (1973) was administered as instrument for data collection using 2x2 factorial design and 2-way analysis of variance (2-Way ANOVA) as statistical tool. The result revealed that hostile behaviour was more with inmates with backgrounds of psychoactive substance use than those who are high on interpersonal sensitivity at F(1, 89) = 11.2, p < .05 and 6.85, p< .05 respectively. Finding theoretically implicated lack of impulse control which seems to be higher with psychoactive substance use and higher levels of interpersonal sensitivity. It is recommended that the management staff of Nigerian Prisons understand the needs of inmates with these backgrounds to be able to reduce hostility occasioned by their backgrounds.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF
The thrust of this paper focused on the soaring unemployment rate in Nigerian on the heels of falling gross domestic product which is a direct consequence of Nigerian mono-economy currently running as crude-oil economy. Against this circumstance, this study therefore focused on the problems of unemployment in Nigeria and the convergence utilization of entrepreneurship models to sensitize enterprising spirit among Nigerians for job and wealth creation especially creating a mindset away from the paranoid dependency on government’s white collar jobs. The study evaluated the components of Econo-psychological entrepreneurship model by Bird (1988) and Institutional ecology theory of entrepreneurial intentions by Meyer and Rowan (1977) especially where their utility converged in application to the real unemployment situation in Nigeria. It is hoped that the theoretical framework will enable stakeholders in Nigeria explore practical avenues of job creation through legislation and taking advantage of the abundant human and natural resources in Nigeria. The success of this theoretical application will reduce unemployment and poverty among Nigerians.  Article visualizations
