This paper presents modelling and simulation of five-phase induction motor fed with pulse width modulated five-phase multilevel voltage source inverter. The conventional and diode clamped multilevel five-phase inverter configurations are reviewed with pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques. A hybrid three-level inverter topology with less number of components count is proposed for five-phase induction motor drive. The dynamic analysis of five-phase voltage equations in d-q axis of the induction motor are stated and modelled usingMatlab/Simulink/Simscape blocks. The simulation results based on conventional and threelevel five-phase inverters are displayed while the hybrid inverter topology showed some better performance based on the following: : at 0.0127secs maximum torque of 34.54Nm occurred, maximum stator current occurred for 0.18secs with a value of 10A, 9.99% total harmonic distortion was obtained and 15KW power rating was obtained

Headroom-based optimization for placement of distributed generation in a distribution substation

This paper presents a headroom-based optimization for the placement of distributed generation (DG) in a distribution substation. The penetration limits of DGs into the existing distribution substations are often expressed as a function of the feeder’s hosting capacity (headroom). Therefore, it is important to estimate the reliability of the network\u27s operation as well as that of the limits imposed by the power quality standards by evaluating of the hosting capacity (headroom) of the existing distribution feeder substation. This study aims at developing a novel algorithm for positioning a bus with permissible headroom capacity for DG positioning without causing voltage violations but maximizing the active power supply. Since DG increases short-circuit faults, the algorithm is useful for utility companies to select feeder substations that have permissible headroom capacity for DG installation and thus, contributing to reducing high DG penetration in the network. The modeling and optimization were carried out the Power System Software for Engineers (PSS/E) environment using the IEEE 14-bus test system. The results obtained from the case study show that only two (2) feeder substations out of fourteen (14) have the permissible headroom capacity for DG connections

Wind Energy Dynamics of the Separately Excited Induction Generator

This paper covers the analysis, dynamic modelling and control of an isolated self-excited induction generator (SEIG) driven by a wind turbine. The proposed dynamic model consists of induction generator, self-excitation capacitance and load model which are expressed in stationary d-q reference frame. The dynamic performance of SEIG is investigated under no load and on load. To predict the performance of the system, a MATLAB based simulation study using matlab embedded function block was carried out. Simulations from the variations of the speed and load display the dynamic behavior of the generator. A constant capacitor value of 100 micro-farads was used in this work. The simulation results obtained illustrate the changes in the voltage, currents, torque and magnetizing inductance of the generator. The wind velocity increase led to the increase in mechanical input from the wind turbine. This results in the increased rotor speed leading also to increased stator phase voltage. The obtained simulations also show that the output voltage of the induction generator depends greatly on its shaft speed and load; this poses a potential threat as it is capable of causing a significant variation in the power consumption in the load of the machine

Nonzero Staircase Modulation Scheme for Switching DC-DC Boost Converter

This paper presents a novel modulation scheme known as the nonzero staircase modulation scheme for switching DC-DC boost converters. This modulation scheme generates two distinct pulse trains/firing signals when a 50 Hz nonzero staircase modulating signal is compared with a 1.5 kHz triangular wave signal. Unlike the conventional modulation schemes, the proposed novel modulation scheme provides two distinctive trains of pulse-width modulated signals for mitigating low and high harmonics. It also possesses 0.56% total harmonic distortions (THD) of the output voltage waveform system, a power output of 4591 W, and THD of 1.12% in the DC-DC boost converter system. It has a simple design and low power loss of 209 W. The proposed scheme enables the single switch boost DC-DC converter used to have an efficiency of 96%. The proposed scheme can be applied in single switch or double switch boost DC-DC converter based-hospital equipment

Hybrid Powered Converter with Relay-Less Automatic Changeover

    No full text
This paper presents a hybrid powered converter with relay-less automatic changeover. No sensor circuit is needed for the power sources to be interchanged to unlike the conventional automatic changeover. The proposed system has nothing to with relay system. The two power sources are the solar panels and the battery bank. The automatic changeover system is based on the voltage disparity between the two power sources. It is realized by combination of solar panels, bidirectional converter and load. The advantages of the proposed systems are: (i) It is light in weight; (ii) It has minimum power losses; (iii) It is very cheap and (iv) It is transformer-less system. It is applied basically in homes and medium scale industries
