    Mapping web personal learning environments

    A recent trend in web development is to build platforms which are carefully designed to host a plurality of software components (sometimes called widgets or plugins) which can be organized or combined (mashed-up) at user's convenience to create personalized environments. The same holds true for the web development of educational applications. The degree of personalization can depend on the role of users such as in traditional virtual learning environment, where the components are chosen by a teacher in the context of a course. Or, it can be more opened as in a so-called personalized learning environment (PLE). It now exists a wide array of available web platforms exhibiting different functionalities but all built on the same concept of aggregating components together to support different tasks and scenarios. There is now an overlap between the development of PLE and the more generic developments in web 2.0 applications such as social network sites. This article shows that 6 more or less independent dimensions allow to map the functionalities of these platforms: the screen dimensionmaps the visual integration, the data dimension maps the portability of data, the temporal dimension maps the coupling between participants, the social dimension maps the grouping of users, the activity dimension maps the structuring of end users–interactions with the environment, and the runtime dimensionmaps the flexibility in accessing the system from different end points. Finally these dimensions are used to compare 6 familiar Web platforms which could potentially be used in the construction of a PLE

    Phenol Biodegradation by Two Xenobiotics-Tolerant Bacteria Immobilized in Polyethylene Oxide Cryogels

    Biofilms were formed on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) cryogels by using bacteria cultured from xenobiotics polluted environments and their phenol biodegrading capability was studied. PEO cryogels were synthesized via UV irradiation cross linking of moderately frozen aqueous system. Two xenobiotics tolerant bacterial isolates KCM R5 and KCM RG5 were used to construct the biofilms on the cryogels. Obtained PEO-biofilms were assessed for their ability to remove phenol at concentrations 300, 400, 600 and 1000 mg L-1 for 28 days. The biofilm PEO-KCM RG5 removed phenol up to 600mg L-1/24 h, whereas the biofilm PEO-KCM R5 was able to degrade up to 1000 mg L-1/24 h. The high content of free-water in the cryogels allowed reproduction of the used bacteria. The high content of free-water in the cryogels allowed reproduction of the used bacteria. Short initial adaptation of the PEO-bio�lms with 100 mg L-1/24 h phenol was crucial for protecting the bacterial cells from dead. The obtained results showed that the liquid debit through the bio�lms on the 28th day of the experiments was lower than at the beginning. The cryogels demonstrated non-toxicity, high biocompatibility with bacteria and excellent mechanical characteristics. After aggressive phenol treatment the PEO-biofilms remained compact, porous and elastic. The investigated new biological materials demonstrate potential for application in the industrial wastewater treatment technologies

    Contextual Spaces with Functional Skins as OpenSocial Extension

    Portability, flexibility and extensibility are essential features of social media platforms. When such Web platforms are able to take user's context into account, they provide better user experience and enhance the effectiveness of users' actions. In this paper, we discuss an extension to OpenSocial standard, namely contextual space, that shapes the framework, in which people carry out online activities. The proposed contextual space extension defines how a set of OpenSocial widgets are aggregated as a Web environment for a given purpose and with a given functional skin as a user interface. Additionally it allows to create contextualized widgets. In this paper we discuss the proposed extension in details and provide the examples of its use based on real life scenarios. Finally, we detail an implementation scheme

The research target -the development method of modeling startup and shutdown transient of the micro linear piezo drive. This method is based on application software package ANSYS. The method embraces a detailed description of the calculation stages to determine the operating characteristics of the designed piezo drive. Based on the numerical solutions, the time characteristics of the designed piezo drive are determined

    The article embraces the experimental description of the micro linear piezo drive intended for the peripheral cord tensioner in the reflecting surface shape regulator system for large-sized transformable spacecraft antenna reflectors. The research target is the experimental investigation of the micro linear piezo drive to determine the stable oscillatory system operating modes which would include improved energy conversion parameters. The following points are briefly presented: test stand construction-design of the peripheral cord tensioner; the determined frequency characteristics and the identified resonant and actual frequencies of an oscillatory system under inertia load. A series of experiments has been conducted for both different preliminary voltages and inertia mass values

Our first Moodle plug-in allows teachers to freely choose a set of tools they want to use in their courses though students can not change widgets proposed by teachers. This environment was evaluated with students within several courses. Even though the environment was perceived as useful by students, they still lacked their own personalization. We describe how the future plug-in tackles this problem

The environment was evaluated with students within several courses. Even though the environment was perceived as useful by students, they lacked their own personalization.
