Energetic Parameters for Atomic-Scale Processes on Ag(100)

    Get PDF
Key energetic parameters that control growth and mass transport in clean Ag films and nanostructures on Ag(100) are compiled. These parameters have been derived from a number of different types of experiments, and from increasingly refined lattice-gas modeling, over several years. The modeling based upon these parameters appears to have good predictive capability in the temperature range 120−300 K

    Midlife Metamorphosis

The study was conducted in response to the need for an increased understanding of the aging experiences of women transitioning midlife. The purpose of the research was to explore the personal understanding of the changes that occur during the midlife period. A qualitative case study was implemented to ascertain how women of the Latter-day Saint (LDS) faith experience the midlife transition. The narratives of 10 LDS women ages 35 to 65 were obtained through personal interviews. The data were analyzed from a feminist, social constructionist, and narrative perspective using Chenail’s Qualitative Matrix as a formal coding system to guide the process of analysis and reporting (Col e, 1994). The findings indicate that the younger cohort had inner conflict s; those in the middle age cohort experienced role confusion; and the oldest cohort experienced generativity. These findings may suggest that a positive metamorphosis takes place in women during the midlife transition

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation of Epitaxial Thin Film Growth: Formation of Submonolayer Islands and Multilayer Mounds

    Get PDF
We consider homoepitaxy (or low‐misfit heteroepitaxy) via vapor deposition or MBE under UHV conditions. Thin film growth is initiated by nucleation and growth of 2D islands in the submonolayer regime. For atoms subsequently deposited on top of islands, a step edge barrier often inhibits downward transport and produces kinetic roughening during multilayer growth. Such unstable growth is characterized by the formation of 3D mounds (multilayer stacks of 2D islands). Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation of suitable atomistic lattice‐gas models can address fundamental or general issues related to both submonolayer and multilayer film evolution, and can also provide a predictive tool for morphological evolution in specific systems. Examples of the successes of KMC modeling are provided for metal homoepitaxial film growth, specifically for contrasting behavior in the classic Ag/Ag(100) and Ag/Ag(111) systems.</p

Additive-enhanced coarsening and smoothening of metal films: Complex mass-flow dynamics underlying nanostructure evolution

    Get PDF
Exposure of Ag/Ag(100) thin films to molecular oxygen (O2) at 220–250 K is shown to activate low-temperature coarsening of submonolayer island distributions, and a smoothing of multilayer films with “mounded” morphologies. Dissociation of O2 at kink sites populates step edges with atomic oxygen (O), modifying the step-edge energetics, and facilitating Ostwald ripening of film nanostructures. We propose that ripening occurs by “easy” detachment and terrace diffusion of an AgnO species. Cluster diffusion does not play a significant role, contrasting with the O-free system

Finding common RNA pseudoknot structures in polynomial time

    Get PDF
AbstractThis paper presents the first polynomial time algorithm for finding common RNA substructures that include pseudoknots and similar structures. While a more general problem is known to be NP-hard, this algorithm exploits special features of RNA structures to match RNA bonds correctly in polynomial time. Although the theoretical upper bound on the algorithmʼs time and space usage is high, the data-driven nature of its computation enables it to avoid computing unnecessary cases, dramatically reducing the actual running time. The algorithm works well in practice, and has been tested on sample RNA structures that include pseudoknots and pseudoknot-like tertiary structures
