    Printing of wirelessly rechargeable solid-state supercapacitors for soft, smart contact lenses with continuous operations

    Recent advances in smart contact lenses are essential to the realization of medical applications and vision imaging for augmented reality through wireless communication systems. However, previous research on smart contact lenses has been driven by a wired system or wireless power transfer with temporal and spatial restrictions, which can limit their continuous use and require energy storage devices. Also, the rigidity, heat, and large sizes of conventional batteries are not suitable for the soft, smart contact lens. Here, we describe a human pilot trial of a soft, smart contact lens with a wirelessly rechargeable, solid-state supercapacitor for continuous operation. After printing the supercapacitor, all device components (antenna, rectifier, and light-emitting diode) are fully integrated with stretchable structures for this soft lens without obstructing vision. The good reliability against thermal and electromagnetic radiations and the results of the in vivo tests provide the substantial promise of future smart contact lenses

    Enhancing Breast Cancer Risk Prediction by Incorporating Prior Images

    Recently, deep learning models have shown the potential to predict breast cancer risk and enable targeted screening strategies, but current models do not consider the change in the breast over time. In this paper, we present a new method, PRIME+, for breast cancer risk prediction that leverages prior mammograms using a transformer decoder, outperforming a state-of-the-art risk prediction method that only uses mammograms from a single time point. We validate our approach on a dataset with 16,113 exams and further demonstrate that it effectively captures patterns of changes from prior mammograms, such as changes in breast density, resulting in improved short-term and long-term breast cancer risk prediction. Experimental results show that our model achieves a statistically significant improvement in performance over the state-of-the-art based model, with a C-index increase from 0.68 to 0.73 (p < 0.05) on held-out test sets

    Towards Round-Optimal Secure Multiparty Computations: Multikey FHE without a CRS

    Multikey fully homomorphic encryption (MFHE) allows homomorphic operations between ciphertexts encrypted under different keys. In applications for secure multiparty computation (MPC)protocols, MFHE can be more advantageous than usual fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) since users do not need to agree with a common public key before the computation when using MFHE. In EUROCRYPT 2016, Mukherjee and Wichs constructed a secure MPC protocol in only two rounds via MFHE which deals with a common random/reference string (CRS) in key generation. After then, Brakerski et al.. replaced the role of CRS with the distributed setup for CRS calculation to form a four round secure MPC protocol. Thus, recent improvements in round complexity of MPC protocols have been made using MFHE. In this paper, we go further to obtain round-efficient and secure MPC protocols. The underlying MFHE schemes in previous works still involve the common value, CRS, it seems to weaken the power of using MFHE to allow users to independently generate their own keys. Therefore, we resolve the issue by constructing an MFHE scheme without CRS based on LWE assumption, and then we obtain a secure MPC protocol against semi-malicious security in three rounds

    Redox Regulation Facilitates Optimal Peptide Selection by MHC Class I during Antigen Processing

    SummaryActivated CD8+ T cells discriminate infected and tumor cells from normal self by recognizing MHC class I-bound peptides on the surface of antigen-presenting cells. The mechanism by which MHC class I molecules select optimal peptides against a background of prevailing suboptimal peptides and in a considerably proteolytic ER environment remained unknown. Here, we identify protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), an enzyme critical to the formation of correct disulfide bonds in proteins, as a component of the peptide-loading complex. We show that PDI stabilizes a peptide-receptive site by regulating the oxidation state of the disulfide bond in the MHC peptide-binding groove, a function that is essential for selecting optimal peptides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that human cytomegalovirus US3 protein inhibits CD8+ T cell recognition by mediating PDI degradation, verifying the functional relevance of PDI-catalyzed peptide editing in controlling intracellular pathogens. These results establish a link between thiol-based redox regulation and antigen processing

    Fibrinogen Yecheon: Congenital Dysfibrinogenemia with Gamma Methionine-310 to Threonine Substitution

    This case study reports a rare fibrinogen variant, γ Met310Thr mutation, for the first time in Korea. The case shows a point mutation from T to C in the 1,007th nucleotide of the FGG gene. This report describes a variant fibrinogen, hereinafter called "fibrinogen Yecheon", using the name after the town where the patient was living at the time of diagnosis. Fibrinogen Yecheon has a de novo heterozygous point mutation of FGG resulting in γ Met310Thr and subsequent extra N-glycosylation at γ Asn308. Extra N-glycosylated fibrinogen is considered a main inhibitor of normal fibrinogen activity

    A long-term outcome of therapeutic angiogenesis by transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells in critical limb ischemia after interventional revascularization

    A 61-year-old male patient with atherosclerotic critical limb ischemia in the left leg underwent stent insertion into the left superficial femoral artery. Stenting procedures improved Rutherford grade from III-5 to II-4. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor stimulated the production of white blood cells over four-fold and mononuclear cells (MNCs) 1.5-fold in the whole blood. Transplantation of 7.9×10 9 autologous MNCs into the left femoral artery rapidly decreased the leg pain intensity, with further improvement of Rutherford grades from II-4 to 0-0 without any side effects. In the four-year follow-up, significant improvement was found in terms of ankle brachial index, from nondetectable to 0.67, and peak systolic velocity, from 14.8 to 36.1 cm/s. Limb salvage and decreased resting pain were the notable outcomes of the treatment

    No difference in stroke knowledge between Korean adherents to traditional and western medicine – the AGE study: an epidemiological study

    BACKGROUND: Effective stroke intervention and risk reduction depend on the general public's awareness and knowledge of stroke. In Korea, where both traditional Oriental medicine and Western medicine are practiced, estimates of the general public's awareness and knowledge of stroke are poor. The present study sought to describe the inception cohort of the Ansan Geriatric Study (AGE study) and to determine baseline stroke awareness and preferred medical treatment for stroke in this Korean sample. METHODS: A total of 2,767 subjects selected randomly from the Ansan Geriatric Study in South Korea were questioned about stroke. Their answers were compared with their sociodemographic data and other variables. RESULTS: Only 44.8% of participants correctly identified stroke as a vascular disease in the human brain. Sudden numbness or weakness was the most frequently identified stroke warning sign (60.2%). Hypertension (66.7%) and mental stress (62.2%) were most frequently identified as stroke risk factors. The contributions of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease to stroke were underestimated; they were identified as risk factors by 28.3% and 18.6% of participants, respectively. The predictors for poor knowledge of stroke warning signs and risk factors were similar irrespective of preference for Western or Oriental medical treatment, and included those with lower levels of education and inaccurate definition of stroke. Television and radio (40.3%) were the most frequent sources of stroke information for both groups. CONCLUSION: This study shows that knowledge of stroke is similar among Koreans with preferences for either Western or Oriental medical treatment and that misunderstandings about stroke are common among the Korean elderly. In order to prevent and manage stroke effectively, public health education regarding basic concepts of stroke is necessary. This should target those with a lower level of education and a misunderstanding of the definition of stroke
