    The (In)visible Display: Reconstituting Museum Experience Through Performance Pedagogy

    In this article, I reconceptualize my understanding of Korean objects in terms of how they perform pedagogically within a context of an art museum in the United States. A pedagogical performance occurs when a contextual shift initiates a process of learning that exposes, examines, and critiques the conventional, pre-existing discourse of objects and cultures. Understanding the museum as a performative site, I describe my experiences in the Arts of Korea gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. By juxtaposing past and present and visible and invisible cultural elements, I play with the standards and assumptions of cultural display. Based on this exploration, I conceptualize an entangled, performative relationship between the museum setting, its objects, and the continuous exchange of subjectivities between and among different audiences from which new possibilities for museum education can emerge

    Effect of Socio-Demographics, Health-Related Problems, and Family Structure on Chronic Absenteeism Among Children

    Purpose/Background: From 5 to 7.5 million school children are chronically absent, defined as missing ≥15 days of school within a year. Students miss schools due to various reasons such as health, socioeconomic status, and environmental factors. We examined child’s health and behavior, family structure, and socio-demographics to understand chronic absenteeism. Materials & Methods: The population included children ages 6 to 17 years from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) years 2008-2013. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to identify the risk factors of chronic absenteeism, adjusting for the complex sampling design. Results: Among socio-demographic variables, age ≥14 years, race/ethnicity, lower-income family, public health insurance, US-born, and speaking English at home were associated with chronic absenteeism. Asians, Mexican Hispanics, and blacks have lower chronic absenteeism than whites. Among health-related variables, children using an inhaler for asthma, having behavioral problems, and less healthy than other children were more likely to be chronically absent. Among family variables, a smaller family size was a risk factor for chronic absenteeism. Discussion/Conclusion: Asthma and behavioral problems were highly associated with chronic absenteeism. The identification of children at risk for chronic absenteeism will help the educational professionals identify the barriers to academic achievements and develop integrated educational interventions and policies to support disadvantaged children

    The Effect Of Internal Control Weakness On Investment Efficiency

    This paper examines whether material weakness in internal accounting control is negatively associated with investment efficiency in Korea. Since internal accounting control weakness drives poor accounting quality and poor accounting quality exacerbates information asymmetry between firms and outside capital suppliers, managerial investment cannot be monitored effectively which result in over- and/or under- investment. Since internal accounting system is closely related to corporate governance, weak internal accounting control is often associated with poor corporate governance, and this control environment makes it hard to monitor managerial opportunistic behavior, causing abnormal investment such as over- and/or under- investment.  We find that firms with internal accounting control weakness tend to make over- and under- investment. We also find the number of weakness in internal accounting control is negatively related to investment efficiency. In addition, three types of qualified review opinion - overall company level weakness, account-specific weakness and disclaimer review opinion due to scope limitation - are differentially affected to investment efficiency; disclaimer review opinion is present the most severe problem in internal accounting control that drives over- and under- investment. Our findings suggest weak internal accounting control provides poor monitoring to manager and cannot restrain managerial inefficient investment decision.

    Basic Enhancement Strategies When Using Bayesian Optimization for Hyperparameter Tuning of Deep Neural Networks

    Compared to the traditional machine learning models, deep neural networks (DNN) are known to be highly sensitive to the choice of hyperparameters. While the required time and effort for manual tuning has been rapidly decreasing for the well developed and commonly used DNN architectures, undoubtedly DNN hyperparameter optimization will continue to be a major burden whenever a new DNN architecture needs to be designed, a new task needs to be solved, a new dataset needs to be addressed, or an existing DNN needs to be improved further. For hyperparameter optimization of general machine learning problems, numerous automated solutions have been developed where some of the most popular solutions are based on Bayesian Optimization (BO). In this work, we analyze four fundamental strategies for enhancing BO when it is used for DNN hyperparameter optimization. Specifically, diversification, early termination, parallelization, and cost function transformation are investigated. Based on the analysis, we provide a simple yet robust algorithm for DNN hyperparameter optimization - DEEP-BO (Diversified, Early-termination-Enabled, and Parallel Bayesian Optimization). When evaluated over six DNN benchmarks, DEEP-BO mostly outperformed well-known solutions including GP-Hedge, BOHB, and the speed-up variants that use Median Stopping Rule or Learning Curve Extrapolation. In fact, DEEP-BO consistently provided the top, or at least close to the top, performance over all the benchmark types that we have tested.     A heuristic approach to wayfinding in interior environments: Exploring student experience in a mixed-use academic building

    The design of the built environment to improve wayfinding is integral to the experiences of everyone involved. This study delves into how interior design elements can contribute to complementing wayfinding design systems in the built environment. By understanding the navigation heuristics of occupants, interior design solutions can be instrumental in expanding and improving the overall wayfinding experience. The literature review explored decision-making frameworks for path design, as discussed by Bode and Tong (2022). This perspective allowed us to distinct goal-oriented and experience-oriented decision-making processes, thus shaping the tailored wayfinding design. A description of the spatial requirements and navigation heuristics that have been considered for the fundamental design process for interior designers according to the specific spatial needs of people in complex environments. The study included three parts: behavior tracking, self-checklists, and interviews. First, the behavior tracking identified the participants' wayfinding behaviors associated with the cognitive heuristics when traveling from the designated origins to destinations. Second, the self-checklists observed the environmental cues and spatial elements when making wayfinding decisions. Third, the interviews with participants revealed the individuals' needs and preferences regarding decision-making of wayfinding. Finally, the study discussed navigation heuristics for interior environments with revised visual cues (i.e., pathfinding, design anchor, spatial objects, and HERE) and adapted five elements for interiors (i.e., corridor, walls & partitions, intersection, rooms & space, and architectural & interior features) to consider the path design guidelines for goal-oriented and experience-oriented users. Goal-oriented navigation prioritizes reaching a destination over being actively engaged with the environment. When people have specific tasks, pursuing objectives can increase stress when goals are not achieved. On the other hand, employing experience-oriented navigation heuristics is vital when measuring visitors' time in an indoor environment. In such contexts, designing an appealing spatial environment becomes significant, where visible and memorable design elements contribute to the overall experience within the built environment.     A content analysis of social media posts among recreational cyclists: A gender perspective

    Recreational cyclists are pertinent but rarely studied leisure and tourism segment. Recreational cycling has traditionally been considered as a ‘masculine stereotyped’ sport. The purpose of the research is to better understand a gendered consumer view of recreational cycling and to possibly promote recreational cycling to women and men in countries like South Africa with keen interests of recreational cycling in the form of sport tourism. This research employs a content analysis of social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as a research method. Specifically, the gendered nature of recreational cycling is focused upon. In total, 2,504 posts from 1,598 unique authors from South Africa are analysed. As a result, this research shows that in the South African context male cyclists tend to like to attend the specialised event and race for their health and fitness while female cyclists seem to find more enjoyable and family-friendly (children focused) cycling. The results also confirm the paradox that women are generally presented in more family oriented roles, while men are typically shown as more independent in the media. Managerial implications and future research are also presented

    Serum markers and development of delayed neuropsychological sequelae after acute carbon monoxide poisoning: anion gap, lactate, osmolarity, S100B protein, and interleukin-6

    Objective Reliable biomarkers of delayed neuropsychological sequelae (DNS) after acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are lacking. This study investigated the associations between potential serum markers and the development of DNS after acute CO poisoning. Methods Retrospective chart reviews were conducted for patients diagnosed with acute CO poisoning during a 28-month period. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of having developed DNS. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors of DNS after CO poisoning. Results Of a total of 102 patients, 10 (9.8%) developed DNS. The levels of serum osmolarity, S100B protein, and serum lactate, as well as serum anion gap, were statistically significant in univariate analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that anion gap (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11 to 1.88), serum lactate level (AOR, 1.74; 95% CI, 1.26 to 2.75), and serum S100B protein level ([AOR, 7.02×105; 95% CI, 4.56×102 to 9.00×1010] in model 1, [AOR, 3.69×105; 95% CI, 2.49×102 to 2.71×1011] in model 2) were independently associated with DNS development. Conclusion Based on our preliminary results, serum lactate level, serum anion gap, and serum S100B protein level in the emergency department could be informative predictors of DNS development in patients with acute CO poisoning. These markers might have the potential to improve early recognition of DNS in patients with acute CO poisoning
