The point prevalence and associated factors of nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonisation in eight geriatric hospitals in Korea
ABSTRACTThe prevalence and associated factors of nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonisation were investigated among patients in geriatric hospitals in Korea. S. aureus was isolated from 317 (50.2%) of 632 patients. The nasal MRSA colonisation prevalence was 36.1%. In bivariate analysis, stay in an intensive care unit, decreased functional status, recent use of antibiotics, use of urinary catheters and the existence of skin breaks were associated with nasal MRSA colonisation (p < 0.05). Of these factors, only decreased functional status and recent use of systemic antibiotics were associated independently with nasal MRSA colonisation following logistic regression analysis
Search for sterile neutrino oscillation using RENO and NEOS data
We present a reactor model independent search for sterile neutrino
oscillation using 2\,509\,days of RENO near detector data and 180 days of NEOS
data. The reactor related systematic uncertainties are significantly suppressed
as both detectors are located at the same reactor complex of Hanbit Nuclear
Power Plant. The search is performed by electron
antineutrino\,() disappearance between six reactors and two
detectors with baselines of 294\,m\,(RENO) and 24\,m\,(NEOS). A spectral
comparison of the NEOS prompt-energy spectrum with a no-oscillation prediction
from the RENO measurement can explore reactor oscillations
to sterile neutrino. Based on the comparison, we obtain a 95\% C.L. excluded
region of \,eV. We also obtain a 68\% C.L. allowed
region with the best fit of \,eV and
=0.080.03 with a p-value of 8.2\%. Comparisons of
obtained reactor antineutrino spectra at reactor sources are made among RENO,
NEOS, and Daya Bay to find a possible spectral variation.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures: This manuscript has been significantly revised by
the joint reanalysis by RENO and NEOS Collaborations. (In the previous
edition, the RENO collaboration used publicly available NEOS data to evaluate
the expected neutrino spectrum at NEOS.
Investigation of previously implicated genetic variants in chronic tic disorders: a transmission disequilibrium test approach
Genetic studies in Tourette syndrome (TS) are characterized by scattered and poorly replicated findings. We aimed to replicate findings from candidate gene and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Our cohort included 465 probands with chronic tic disorder (93% TS) and both parents from 412 families (some probands were siblings). We assessed 75 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 465 parent–child trios; 117 additional SNPs in 211 trios; and 4 additional SNPs in 254 trios. We performed SNP and gene-based transmission disequilibrium tests and compared nominally significant SNP results with those from a large independent case–control cohort. After quality control 71 SNPs were available in 371 trios; 112 SNPs in 179 trios; and 3 SNPs in 192 trios. 17 were candidate SNPs implicated in TS and 2 were implicated in obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD); 142 were tagging SNPs from eight monoamine neurotransmitter-related genes (including dopamine and serotonin); 10 were top SNPs from TS GWAS; and 13 top SNPs from attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, OCD, or ASD GWAS. None of the SNPs or genes reached significance after adjustment for multiple testing. We observed nominal significance for the candidate SNPs rs3744161 (TBCD) and rs4565946 (TPH2) and for five tagging SNPs; none of these showed significance in the independent cohort. Also, SLC1A1 in our gene-based analysis and two TS GWAS SNPs showed nominal significance, rs11603305 (intergenic) and rs621942 (PICALM). We found no convincing support for previously implicated genetic polymorphisms. Targeted re-sequencing should fully appreciate the relevance of candidate genes

Hollow Nanostructured Metal Silicates with Tunable Properties for Lithium Ion Battery Anodes
Hollow nanostructured materials have attracted considerable interest as lithium ion battery electrodes because of their good electrochemical properties. In this study, we developed a general procedure for the synthesis of hollow nanostructured metal silicates via a hydrothermal process using silica nanoparticles as templates. The morphology and composition of hollow nanostructured metal silicates could be controlled by changing the metal precursor. The as-prepared hierarchical hollow nanostructures with diameters of 100-200 nm were composed of variously shaped primary particles such as hollow nanospheres, solid nanoparticles, and thin nanosheets. Furthermore, different primary nanoparticles could be combined to form hybrid hierarchical hollow nanostructures. When hollow nanostructured metal silicates were applied as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, all samples exhibited good cyclic stability during 300 cycles, as well as tunable electrochemical properties. © 2015 American Chemical Society126271sciescopu
Extreme parsimony in ATP consumption by 20S complexes in the global disassembly of single SNARE complexes
Fueled by ATP hydrolysis in N-ethylmaleimide sensitive factor (NSF), the 20S complex disassembles rigid SNARE (soluble NSF attachment protein receptor) complexes in single unraveling step. This global disassembly distinguishes NSF from other molecular motors that make incremental and processive motions, but the molecular underpinnings of its remarkable energy efficiency remain largely unknown. Using multiple single-molecule methods, we found remarkable cooperativity in mechanical connection between NSF and the SNARE complex, which prevents dysfunctional 20S complexes that consume ATP without productive disassembly. We also constructed ATP hydrolysis cycle of the 20S complex, in which NSF largely shows randomness in ATP binding but switches to perfect ATP hydrolysis synchronization to induce global SNARE disassembly, minimizing ATP hydrolysis by non-20S complex-forming NSF molecules. These two mechanisms work in concert to concentrate ATP consumption into functional 20S complexes, suggesting evolutionary adaptations by the 20S complex to the energetically expensive mechanical task of SNARE complex disassembly.11Nsciescopu
Highly ordered and vertically oriented TiO2/Al2O3 nanotube electrodes for application in dye-sensitized solar cells
The surface of long TiO2 nanotube (NT) electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was
modified without post-annealing by using atomic layer deposition (ALD) for the enhancement of
photovoltage. Vertically oriented TiO2 NT electrodes with highly ordered and crack-free surface
structures over large areas were prepared by a two-step anodization method. The prepared TiO2
NTs had a pore size of 80 nm, and a length of 23 μm. Onto these TiO2 NTs, an Al2O3 shell of a
precisely controlled thickness was deposited by ALD. The conformally coated shell layer was
confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray
spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) of the
DSSCs was gradually enhanced as the thickness of the Al2O3 shell of the TiO2/Al2O3 NT
electrodes was increased, which resulted from the enhanced electron lifetime. The enhanced
electron lifetime caused by the energy barrier effect of the shell layer was measured
quantitatively by the open-circuit voltage decay technique. As a result, 1- and 2-cycle-coated
samples showed enhanced conversion efficiencies compared to the bare sample.122231sciescopu
