    The effect of contact conditions and material properties on the elasticity terminus of a spherical contact

    AbstractThe fundamental problem of elastic–plastic normally loaded contact between a deformable sphere and a rigid flat is analyzed under perfect slip and full stick conditions for a wide range of the sphere mechanical properties. The effect of these properties on failure inception is investigated by finding the critical interference and normal loading as well as the location of the first plastic yield or brittle failure. The analysis is based on the analytical Hertz solution under frictionless slip condition and on a numerical solution under stick condition. The failure inception is determined by using either the von Mises criterion of plastic yield or the maximum tensile stress criterion of brittle failure. For small values of the Poisson’s ratio the behavior in stick, when high tangential stresses prevail in the contact interface, is much different than in slip. For high values of the Poisson’s ratio the tangential stresses under stick condition are low and the behavior of the failure inception in stick and slip is similar

    DATS - data containers for web applications

    Data containers enable users to control access to their data while untrusted applications compute on it. However, they require replicating an application inside each container - compromising functionality, programmability, and performance. We propose DATS - a system to run web applications that retains application usability and efficiency through a mix of hardware capability enhanced containers and the introduction of two new primitives modeled after the popular model-view-controller (MVC) pattern. (1) DATS introduces a templating language to create views that compose data across data containers. (2) DATS uses authenticated storage and confinement to enable an untrusted storage service, such as memcached and deduplication, to operate on plain-text data across containers. These two primitives act as robust declassifiers that allow DATS to enforce non-interference across containers, taking large applications out of the trusted computing base (TCB). We showcase eight different web applications including Gitlab and a Slack-like chat, significantly improve the worst-case overheads due to application replication, and demonstrate usable performance for common-case usage

    ABSTRACT A numerical simulation is presented for several loadingunloading cycles of an adhesive contact between an elasticplastic sphere and a rigid flat. The main goal of the simulation is to study the plastic deformation evolution in a contact bump material -the microscopic electrode found in a MEMS microswitch for providing a good electric contact. This bump is subjected to a cyclic contact interaction with a harder substrate and cyclic plasticity of the bump material can lead to its wear and as result to a failure of the whole MEMS device

    The synergetic effects of surface texturing and MoDDP additive applied to ball-on-disk friction subject to both flooded and starved lubrication conditions

    This paper reports a novel work on the synergetic effects of microscale surface texturing and lubricant friction modifier additive of molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate (MoDDP) subject to both flooded and starved lubrication conditions. The experiments were performed on reciprocating ball-on-disk friction in GTL8 base oil with and without MoDDP. In the flooded lubrication condition, the test results demonstrated that the presence of the MoDDP additive contributed to lower friction coefficients, and also more pronounced effect of surface textures on friction than in the case of the bare base oil. In the starved lubrication experiments, textured and texture-free surfaces in the oils with and without MoDDP additive were tested until an abrupt rising of friction coefficient was detected. The results showed that the magnitude of friction coefficient before terminating each test was the almost same for various tests, while the endurance time in different test conditions was significantly different. The textured surface exhibited longer endurance time than the texture-free surface, especially when the MoDDP additive was used. The mechanism of the synergetic effects of surface textures and MoDDP additive has been discussed based on the experimental observations in the following sections. This study provides a new idea for the application of surface texture in boundary lubrication when lubricant additive is contained in the lubricating oils

    Laser Patterning Pretreatment before Thermal Spraying: A Technique to Adapt and Control the Surface Topography to Thermomechanical Loading and Materials

    Coating characteristics are highly dependent on substrate preparation and spray parameters. Hence, the surface must be adapted mechanically and physicochemically to favor coating–substrate adhesion. Conventional surface preparation methods such as grit blasting are limited by surface embrittlement and produce large plastic deformations throughout the surface, resulting in compressive stress and potential cracks. Among all such methods, laser patterning is suitable to prepare the surface of sensitive materials. No embedded grit particles can be observed, and high-quality coatings are obtained. Finally, laser surface patterning adapts the impacted surface, creating large anchoring area. Optimized surface topographies can then be elaborated according to the material as well as the application. The objective of this study is to compare the adhesive bond strength between two surface preparation methods, namely grit blasting and laser surface patterning, for two material couples used in aerospace applications: 2017 aluminum alloy and AISI 304L stainless steel coated with NiAl and YSZ, respectively. Laser patterning significantly increases adherence values for similar contact area due to mixed-mode (cohesive and adhesive) failure. The coating is locked in the pattern
