    Single source three dimensional capture of full field plate vibrations

    Measurement of the vibrations of plates can offer significant challenges to the experimentalist, particularly when the plates are lightweight, exhibit large amplitude deflections, nonlinear responses or are initially curved. The use of accelerometers adds masses which can change the dynamics of lightweight plates. Large amplitude oscillations and initial curvatures cause complications when using a laser vibrometer, as they make it difficult to get consistent reflections back to the receiver. Furthermore, large or nonlinear oscillations challenge inherent assumptions on which the vibrometer’s algorithms depend. A high speed video camera avoids these issues, but makes it hard to extract numerical data. This paper describes a method that extends the capabilities of a high speed video camera by using a mirror, allowing post-processing software to stereoscopically resolve an array of points on the plate surface to 3D coordinates, capturing the complete shape and position of the plate throughout vibration. This method avoids all the problems mentioned above and gives very clear insight into plate vibration. Some example results of this method are presented, using thermally bistable carbon laminate plates filmed at a 1000 frames per second. These plates pose the challenges described, and also exhibit an unusual oscillatory motion where the plates ‘snap’ between two statically stable states. The method is shown to provide clear insight into the rich dynamics of these plates

    Elevated Plasma Corticosterone Decreases Yolk Testosterone and Progesterone in Chickens: Linking Maternal Stress and Hormone-Mediated Maternal Effects

    Despite considerable research on hormone-mediated maternal effects in birds, the underlying physiology remains poorly understood. This study investigated a potential regulation mechanism for differential accumulation of gonadal hormones in bird eggs. Across vertebrates, glucocorticoids can suppress reproduction by downregulating gonadal hormones. Using the chicken as a model species, we therefore tested whether elevated levels of plasma corticosterone in female birds influence the production of gonadal steroids by the ovarian follicles and thus the amount of reproductive hormones in the egg yolk. Adult laying hens of two different strains (ISA brown and white Leghorn) were implanted subcutaneously with corticosterone pellets that elevated plasma corticosterone concentrations over a period of nine days. Steroid hormones were subsequently quantified in plasma and yolk. Corticosterone-implanted hens of both strains had lower plasma progesterone and testosterone levels and their yolks contained less progesterone and testosterone. The treatment also reduced egg and yolk mass. Plasma estrogen concentrations decreased in white Leghorns only whereas in both strains yolk estrogens were unaffected. Our results demonstrate for the first time that maternal plasma corticosterone levels influence reproductive hormone concentrations in the yolk. Maternal corticosterone could therefore mediate environmentally induced changes in yolk gonadal hormone concentrations. In addition, stressful situations experienced by the bird mother might affect the offspring via reduced amounts of reproductive hormones present in the egg as well as available nutrients for the embryo

    Communication and marketing as tools to cultivate the public's health: a proposed "people and places" framework

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Communication and marketing are rapidly becoming recognized as core functions, or core competencies, in the field of public health. Although these disciplines have fostered considerable academic inquiry, a coherent sense of precisely how these disciplines can inform the practice of public health has been slower to emerge.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>In this article we propose a framework – based on contemporary ecological models of health – to explain how communication and marketing can be used to advance public health objectives. The framework identifies the attributes of people (as individuals, as social networks, and as communities or populations) and places that influence health behaviors and health. Communication, i.e., the provision of information, can be used in a variety of ways to foster beneficial change among both people (e.g., activating social support for smoking cessation among peers) and places (e.g., convincing city officials to ban smoking in public venues). Similarly, marketing, i.e., the development, distribution and promotion of products and services, can be used to foster beneficial change among both people (e.g., by making nicotine replacement therapy more accessible and affordable) and places (e.g., by providing city officials with model anti-tobacco legislation that can be adapted for use in their jurisdiction).</p> <p>Summary</p> <p>Public health agencies that use their communication and marketing resources effectively to support people in making healthful decisions and to foster health-promoting environments have considerable opportunity to advance the public's health, even within the constraints of their current resource base.</p

    Morphing in nature and beyond: a review of natural and synthetic shape-changing materials and mechanisms

    Shape-changing materials open an entirely new solution space for a wide range of disciplines: from architecture that responds to the environment and medical devices that unpack inside the body, to passive sensors and novel robotic actuators. While synthetic shape-changing materials are still in their infancy, studies of biological morphing materials have revealed key paradigms and features which underlie efficient natural shape-change. Here, we review some of these insights and how they have been, or may be, translated to artificial solutions. We focus on soft matter due to its prevalence in nature, compatibility with users and potential for novel design. Initially, we review examples of natural shape-changing materials—skeletal muscle, tendons and plant tissues—and compare with synthetic examples with similar methods of operation. Stimuli to motion are outlined in general principle, with examples of their use and potential in manufactured systems. Anisotropy is identified as a crucial element in directing shape-change to fulfil designed tasks, and some manufacturing routes to its achievement are highlighted. We conclude with potential directions for future work, including the simultaneous development of materials and manufacturing techniques and the hierarchical combination of effects at multiple length scales.</p

    Primary pulmonary hypertension and human immunodeficiency virus infection

    This report details the case of a 42-year-old homosexual Caucasian male with infection due to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) who presented with a four-month history of progressive dyspnea and was found to have clinical and hemodynamic evidence of severe pulmonary hypertension. He had had no opportunistic infections, and had a T helper lymphocyte count of 200×106/L. Extensive clinical laboratory and radiological evaluations revealed no underlying cause. Microscopic examination of postmortem lung tissue revealed findings consistent with grade V pulmonary hypertension. Electron microscopic analysis and polyermase chain reaction detection of HIV-DNA from dissected pulmonary arterioles failed to provide any supportive evidence to suggest productive infection of the pulmonary arteriolar endothelial cells by HIV-1. Although HIV-1 likely plays a role in the pathogenesis of primary pulmonary hypertension, evidence for direct infection of pulmonary vessel endothelium was lacking in this case.
