    Dust in the Photospheric Environment II. Effect on the Near Infrared Spectra of L and T Dwarfs

    We report an attempt to interpret the spectra of L and T dwarfs with the use of the Unified Cloudy Model (UCM). For this purpose, we extend the grid of the UCMs to the cases of log g = 4.5 and 5.5. The dust column density relative to the gas column density in the observable photosphere is larger at the higher gravities, and molecular line intensity is generally smaller at the higher gravities. The overall spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are f_{J} < f_{H} < f_{K} in middle and late L dwarfs, f_{J} f_{K} in early T dwarfs (L/T transition objects), and finally f_{J} > f_{H} > f_{K} in middle and late T dwarfs, where f_{J}, f_{H}, and f_{K} are the peak fluxes at J, H, and K bands, respectively, in f_{nu} unit. This tendency is the opposite to what is expected for the temperature effect, but can be accounted for as the effect of thin dust clouds formed deep in the photosphere together with the effect of the gaseous opacities including H_2 (CIA), H_2O, CH_4, and K I. Although the UCMs are semi-empirical models based on a simple assumption that thin dust clouds form in the region of T_{cr} < T < T_{cond} (T_{cr} = 1800K is an only empirical parameter while T_{cond} about 2000K is fixed by the thermodynamical data), the major observations including the overall SEDs as well as the strengths of the major spectral features are consistently accounted for throughout L and T dwarfs. In view of the formidable complexities of the cloud formation, we hope that our UCM can be of some use as a guide for future modelings of the ultracool dwarfs as well as for interpretation of observed data of L and T dwarfs.Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, to appear in Astrophys.     Norwegian dairy farmer's preferences for breeding goal traits and associations with herd and farm characteristics

    The aims of this study were to investigate variation and clustering in breeding goal trait preferences among Norwegian dairy farmers and to identify factors with a systematic influence on their preferences. An internet-based questionnaire was sent out to dairy farmers connected to the Norwegian co-operative breeding organization Geno (N = 8222), of which 10.8% answered (N = 888). Of the 15 suggested traits fertility had the highest overall ranking, while parasite resistance and methane emission had the lowest. Four distinct preference clusters were identified by the means of cluster analysis, of which two had a high preference for milk production. Differences in terms of farm and herd characteristics between clusters suggests a mixture of systematic and intrinsic effects on breeding goal trait priorities.     H^\pm W^\mp production in the MSSM at the LHC

    We investigate the viability of observing charged Higgs bosons (H^\pm) produced in association with W bosons at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, using the leptonic decay H^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau and hadronic W decay, within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Performing a parton level study we show how the irreducible Standard Model background from W + 2 jets can be controlled by applying appropriate cuts.     Magnetospheric response to the solar wind as indicated by the cross-polar potential drop and the low-latitude asymmetric disturbance field

    International audienceThe cross-polar potential drop ?pc and the low-latitude asymmetric geomagnetic disturbance field, as indicated by the mid-latitude ASY-H magnetic index, are used to study the average magnetospheric response to the solar wind forcing for southward interplanetary magnetic field conditions. The state of the solar wind is monitored by the ACE spacecraft and the ionospheric convection is measured by the double probe electric field instrument on the Astrid-2 satellite. The solar wind-magnetosphere coupling is examined for 77 cases in February and from mid-May to mid-June 1999 by using the interplanetary magnetic field Bz component and the reconnection electric field. Our results show that the maximum correlation between ?pc and the reconnection electric field is obtained approximately 25 min after the solar wind has reached a distance of 11 RE from the Earth, which is the assumed average position of the magnetopause. The corresponding correlation for ASY-H shows two separate responses to the reconnection electric field, delayed by about 35 and 65 min, respectively. We suggest that the combination of the occurrence of a large magnetic storm on 18 February 1999 and the enhanced level of geomagnetic activity which peaks at Kp = 7- may explain the fast direct response of ASY-H to the solar wind at 35 min, as well as the lack of any clear secondary responses of ?pc to the driving solar wind at time delays longer than 25 min

    Ultrasound sensing using the acousto-optic effect in polymer dispersed liquid crystals

    Acousto-optic effects are demonstrated in polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films, showing promise for applications in ultrasound sensing. The PDLC films are used to image two displacement profiles of an air-coupled flexural transducers resonant modes at 295 kHz and 730 kHz. Results are confirmed using laser vibrometry. The regions on the transducers with the largest displacements are clearly imaged by the PDLC films, with the resolution agreeing well with laser vibrometry scanning. Imaging takes significantly less time than a scanning system (switching time of a few seconds, as compared to 8 hours for laser vibrometry). Heating effects are carefully monitored using thermal imaging, and are found not to be the main cause of PDLC clearing

    A method for extending planar axis-symmetric parallel manipulators to spatial mechanisms

    This paper investigates axis-symmetric parallel manipulators, composed of a central base column and an arm system able to rotate around this column. The arm system includes several actuated upper arms, each connected to a manipulated platform by one or more lower arm linkages. Such manipulators feature an extensive positional workspace in relation to the manipulator footprint and equal manipulator properties in all radial half-planes defined by the common rotation-axis of the upper arms. The similarities between planar manipulators exclusively employing 2-degrees-of-freedom (2-DOF) lower arm linkages and lower mobility spatial manipulators only utilising 5-DOF lower arm linkages are analysed. The 2-DOF linkages are composed of a link with a 1-DOF hinge on both ends whilst the 5-DOF linkages utilise 3-DOF spherical joints and 2-DOF universal joints. By employing a proposed linkage substitution scheme, it is shown how a wide range of spatial axis-symmetric parallel manipulators can be derived from a limited range of planar manipulators of the same type

    Temperature driven α\alpha to β\beta phase-transformation in Ti, Zr and Hf from first principles theory combined with lattice dynamics

    Lattice dynamical methods used to predict phase transformations in crystals typically deal with harmonic phonon spectra and are therefore not applicable in important situations where one of the competing crystal structures is unstable in the harmonic approximation, such as the bcc structure involved in the hcp to bcc martensitic phase transformation in Ti, Zr and Hf. Here we present an expression for the free energy that does not suffer from such shortcomings, and we show by self consistent {\it ab initio} lattice dynamical calculations (SCAILD), that the critical temperature for the hcp to bcc phase transformation in Ti, Zr and Hf, can be effectively calculated from the free energy difference between the two phases. This opens up the possibility to study quantitatively, from first principles theory, temperature induced phase transitions.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
