Two-Loop Bethe Logarithms
We calculate the two-loop Bethe logarithm correction to atomic energy levels
in hydrogen-like systems. The two-loop Bethe logarithm is a low-energy quantum
electrodynamic (QED) effect involving multiple summations over virtual excited
atomic states. Although much smaller in absolute magnitude than the well-known
one-loop Bethe logarithm, the two-loop analog is quite significant when
compared to the current experimental accuracy of the 1S-2S transition: it
contributes -8.19 and -0.84 kHz for the 1S and the 2S state, respectively. The
two-loop Bethe logarithm has been the largest unknown correction to the
hydrogen Lamb shift to date. Together with the ongoing measurement of the
proton charge radius at the Paul Scherrer Institute its calculation will bring
theoretical and experimental accuracy for the Lamb shift in atomic hydrogen to
the level of 10^(-7).Comment: 4 pages, RevTe
Assessment of cockpit interface concepts for data link retrofit
The problem is examined of retrofitting older generation aircraft with data link capability. The approach taken analyzes requirements for the cockpit interface, based on review of prior research and opinions obtained from subject matter experts. With this background, essential functions and constraints for a retrofit installation are defined. After an assessment of the technology available to meet the functions and constraints, candidate design concepts are developed. The most promising design concept is described in detail. Finally, needs for further research and development are identified
On the Number of Facets of Three-Dimensional Dirichlet Stereohedra III: Full Cubic Groups
We are interested in the maximum possible number of facets that Dirichlet
stereohedra for three-dimensional crystallographic groups can have. The problem
for non-cubic groups was studied in previous papers by D. Bochis and the second
author (Discrete Comput. Geom. 25:3 (2001), 419-444, and Beitr. Algebra Geom.,
47:1 (2006), 89-120). This paper deals with ''full'' cubic groups, while
''quarter'' cubic groups are left for a subsequent paper. Here, ''full'' and
''quarter'' refers to the recent classification of three-dimensional
crystallographic groups by Conway, Delgado-Friedrichs, Huson and Thurston
(math.MG/9911185, Beitr. Algebra Geom. 42.2 (2001), 475-507).
Our main result in this paper is that Dirichlet stereohedra for any of the 27
full groups cannot have more than 25 facets. We also find stereohedra with 17

Spurious phase in a model for traffic on a bridge
We present high-precision Monte Carlo data for the phase diagram of a
two-species driven diffusive system, reminiscent of traffic across a narrow
bridge. Earlier studies reported two phases with broken symmetry; the existence
of one of these has been the subject of some debate. We show that the disputed
phase disappears for sufficiently large systems and/or sufficiently low bulk

Uncovering Bugs in Distributed Storage Systems during Testing (not in Production!)
Testing distributed systems is challenging due to multiple sources of nondeterminism. Conventional testing techniques, such as unit, integration and stress testing, are ineffective in preventing serious but subtle bugs from reaching production. Formal techniques, such as TLA+, can only verify high-level specifications of systems at the level of logic-based models, and fall short of checking the actual executable code. In this paper, we present a new methodology for testing distributed systems. Our approach applies advanced systematic testing techniques to thoroughly check that the executable code adheres to its high-level specifications, which significantly improves coverage of important system behaviors. Our methodology has been applied to three distributed storage systems in the Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform. In the process, numerous bugs were identified, reproduced, confirmed and fixed. These bugs required a subtle combination of concurrency and failures, making them extremely difficult to find with conventional testing techniques. An important advantage of our approach is that a bug is uncovered in a small setting and witnessed by a full system trace, which dramatically increases the productivity of debugging
Charge Exchange Spectra of Hydrogenic and He-like Iron
We present H-like Fe XXVI and He-like Fe XXV charge-exchange spectra
resulting from collisions of highly charged iron with N2 gas at an energy of 10
eV/amu in an electron beam ion trap. Although individual high-n emission lines
are not resolved in our measurements, we observe that the most likely level for
Fe25+ --> Fe24+ electron capture is n~9, in line with expectations, while the
most likely value for Fe26+ --> Fe25+ charge exchange is significantly higher.
In the Fe XXV spectrum, the K-alpha emission feature dominates, whether
produced via charge exchange or collisional excitation. The K-alpha centroid is
lower in energy for the former case than the latter (6666 versus 6685 eV,
respectively), as expected because of the strong enhancement of emission from
the forbidden and intercombination lines, relative to the resonance line, in
charge-exchange spectra. In contrast, the Fe XXVI high-n Lyman lines have a
summed intensity greater than that of Ly-alpha, and are substantially stronger
than predicted from theoretical calculations of charge exchange with atomic H.
We conclude that the angular momentum distribution resulting from electron
capture using a multi-electron target gas is significantly different from that
obtained with H, resulting in the observed high-n enhancement. A discussion is
presented of the relevance of our results to studies of diffuse Fe emission in
the Galactic Center and Galactic Ridge, particularly with ASTRO-E2/Suzaku.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures (3 color), accepted by Ap
Significant initial results from the environmental measurements experiment on ATS-6
The Applications Technology Satellite (ATS-6), launched into synchronous orbit on 30 May 1974, carried a set of six particle detectors and a triaxial fluxgate magnetometer. The particle detectors were able to determine the ion and electron distribution functions from 1 to greater than 10 to the 8th power eV. It was found that the magnetic field is weaker and more tilted than predicted by models which neglect internal plasma and that there is a seasonal dependence to the magnitude and tilt. ATS-6 magnetic field measurements showed the effects of field-aligned currents associated with substorms, and large fluxes of field-aligned particles were observed with the particle detectors. Encounters with the plasmasphere revealed the existence of warm plasma with temperatures up to 30 eV. A variety of correlated waves in both the particles and fields were observed: pulsation continuous oscillations, seen predominantly in the plasmasphere bulge; ultralow frequency (ULF) standing waves; ring current proton ULF waves; and low frequency waves that modulate the energetic electrons. In additon, large scale waves on the energetic-ion-trapping boundary were observed, and the intensity of energetic electrons was modulated in association with the passage of sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field
