    Robust, frequency-stable and accurate mid-IR laser spectrometer based on frequency comb metrology of quantum cascade lasers up-converted in orientation-patterned GaAs

    We demonstrate a robust and simple method for measurement, stabilization and tuning of the frequency of cw mid-infrared (MIR) lasers, in particular of quantum cascade lasers. The proof of principle is performed with a quantum cascade laser at 5.4 \mu m, which is upconverted to 1.2 \mu m by sum-frequency generation in orientation-patterned GaAs with the output of a standard high-power cw 1.5 \mu m fiber laser. Both the 1.2 \mu m and the 1.5 \mu m waves are measured by a standard Er:fiber frequency comb. Frequency measurement at the 100 kHz-level, stabilization to sub-10 kHz level, controlled frequency tuning and long-term stability are demonstrated

    E5501: phase II study of topotecan sequenced with etoposide/cisplatin, and irinotecan/cisplatin sequenced with etoposide for extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer.

    PURPOSE: Sequence-dependent improved efficacy of topoisomerase I followed by topoisomerase 2 inhibitors was assessed in a randomized phase II study in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). METHODS: Patients with previously untreated extensive-stage SCLC with measurable disease, ECOG performance status of 0-3 and stable brain metastases were eligible. Arm A consisted of topotecan (0.75 mg/m(2)) on days 1, 2 and 3, etoposide (70 mg/m(2)) and cisplatin (20 mg/m(2)) (PET) on days 8, 9 and 10 in a 3-week cycle. Arm B consisted of irinotecan (50 mg/m(2)) and cisplatin (20 mg/m(2)) on days 1 and 8 followed by etoposide (85 mg/m(2) PO bid) on days 3 and 10 (PIE) in a 3-week cycle. RESULTS: We enrolled 140 patients and randomized 66 eligible patients to each arm. Only 54.5 % of all patients completed the planned maximum 6 cycles. There were grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse events in approximately 70 % of the patients on both arms including 6 treatment-related grade 5 events. The overall response rates (CR + PR) were 69.7 % (90 % CI 59.1-78.9, 95 % CI 57.1-80.4 %) for arm A and 57.6 % (90 % CI 46.7-67.9, 95 % CI 44.8-69.7 %) for arm B. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 6.4 months (95 % CI 5.4-7.5 months) and 11.9 months (95 % CI 9.6-13.7 months) for arm A and 6.0 months (95 % CI 5.4-7.0 months) and 11.0 months (95 % CI 8.6-13.1 months) for arm B. CONCLUSION: Sequential administration of topoisomerase inhibitors did not improve on the historical efficacy of standard platinum-doublet chemotherapy for extensive-stage SCLC

    Scattering Theory of Kondo Mirages and Observation of Single Kondo Atom Phase Shift

    We explain the origin of the Kondo mirage seen in recent quantum corral Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) experiments with a scattering theory of electrons on the surfaces of metals. Our theory combined with experimental data provides the first direct observation of a single Kondo atom phase shift. The Kondo mirage at the empty focus of an elliptical quantum corral is shown to arise from multiple electron bounces off the walls of the corral in a manner analagous to the formation of a real image in optics.     Anion-selective membrane electrodes based on metalloporphyrins: The influence of lipophilic anionic and cationic sites on potentiometric selectivity

    The role of lipophilic anionic and cationic additives on the potentiometric anion selectivities of polymer membrane electrodes prepared with various metalloporphyrins as anion selective ionophores is examined. The presence of lipophilic anionic sites (e.g. tetraphenylborate derivatives) is shown to enhance the non-Hofmeister anion selectivities of membranes doped with In(III) and Sn(IV) porphyrins. In contrast, membranes containing Co(III) porphyrins require the addition of lipophilic cationic sites (e.g. tridodecylmethylammonium ions) in order to achieve optimal anion selectivity (for nitrite and thiocyanate) as well as rapid and reversible Nernstian response toward these anionic species. These experimental results coupled with appropriate theoretical models that predict the effect of lipophilic anion and cation sites on the selectivities of membranes doped with either neutral or charged carrier type ionophores may be used to determine the operative ionophore mechanism of each metalloporphyrin complex within the organic membrane phase.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/31561/1/0000488.pd

    Neural computations of threat in the aftermath of combat trauma

    By combining computational, morphological, and functional analyses, this study relates latent markers of associative threat learning to overt post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in combat veterans. Using reversal learning, we found that symptomatic veterans showed greater physiological adjustment to cues that did not predict what they had expected, indicating greater sensitivity to prediction errors for negative outcomes. This exaggerated weighting of prediction errors shapes the dynamic learning rate (associability) and value of threat predictive cues. The degree to which the striatum tracked the associability partially mediated the positive correlation between prediction-error weights and PTSD symptoms, suggesting that both increased prediction-error weights and decreased striatal tracking of associability independently contribute to PTSD symptoms. Furthermore, decreased neural tracking of value in the amygdala, in addition to smaller amygdala volume, independently corresponded to higher PTSD symptom severity. These results provide evidence for distinct neurocomputational contributions to PTSD symptoms
