    Age and growth of Capoeta erhani Turan, Kottelat and Ekmekçi, 2008 from the Seyhan River (southeast of Turkey)

    Capoeta erhani is an endemic species to southeast of Turkey. To date the information on biology of this species from inland waters of Turkey is very limited. The present study aims to provide the basic age and growth parameters of C. erhani from the middle basin of the Seyhan River. In total, 255 individuals were collected seasonally between October 2013 and September 2014. The overall sex ratio was 3.47:1 M:F. The total length of the specimens ranged from 10.4 to 33.0 cm and the weight from 9.0 to 360.0 g. The ages of total examined fish ranged from 0 to 5 years. Maximum age was found to be 5 years for both sexes. Length-weight relationship was described as logW= -5.067 + 3.168 logTL (r^2= 0.972). The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L∞ = 32.51 cm; k = 0.400 year-1; t0 =-0.930 year for the entire population. Munro’s phi prime index in males, females and both sexes was calculated as 6.00, 6.12 and 6.04

    The aim of this study is to provide necessary information on the biology of mosquitofish in Seyhan Dam Lake in Adana, which is located in southern part of Turkey. The population structure of eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 was studied in Seyhan Dam Lake. A total of 1582 specimens (772 males and 810 females) were collected monthly from January to December, 2007. The age composition of the sample range between 0+ and 2+in both sexes. The sex ratio was M:F= 1:1.04. The length-weight relationship calculated for all individuals, with W=0.0129 x L2.927. von Bertalanffy growth parameters were for males, L8=3.31cm, K=0.6597 year-1, to =0.9483 year; for females L8=6.62cm, K=0.2369 year-1, to =0.9259 year; for all samples, L8=5.84cm, K=0.2369 year-1, to =-1.0740 year. A total of 102 stomachs were examined and total of organisms identified from alimentary canal. The diet mainly consist of Diptera (Chironomidae (pupa) 29.40%; Diptera (adult) 24.50%), Egg (mosquito 14.70%; different organisms 1.96%), Crustacea (Copepoda 9.80%, Cladocera 3.92%), Coleoptera 4.90%, Hemiptera 1.96%, Fishes (G. holbrooki 3.92%), Other Hymenoptera 1.96%, Tricoptera 0.98%, Plecoptera 0.98%, Formicidae 0.98%. These data were conducted to compare with the results of other studies to carry out for other geographic areas

    Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were evaluated for six freshwater species from the Seyhan Reservoir (south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey): Alburnus orontis, Capoeta angorae, Capoeta erhani, Garra rufa, Luciobarbus pectoralis and Salaria fluviatilis. A total of 525 specimens were captured from five locations using gill nets, scoop nets, and trammel nets of various mesh sizes in November 2012, March 2013 and September 2013. Regressions of all species were found to be significant. These are the first LWR reports for these species from the Seyhan River basin, and the first LWR reports for three of these species (Alburnus orontis, Garra rufa, Luciobarbus pectoralis) from inland waters of Turkey. © 2015 Blackwell Verlag Gmb

    Length-weight and length-length relationships of the Mediterranean shad alosa agone (Scopoli, 1786) from the Northeastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey

    The relationships between total length (TL), fork length (FL) and standard length (SL), and between TL and weight were investigated for Mediterranenan shad, Alosa agone, from two estuary localities (Karaduvar and Samandag), North-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. A total of 297 specimens, 150 males and 147 females, were captured by gill net and trammel net between September 2006 and May 2007 from the NE Mediterranean Sea coast of Turkey. The values of the exponent b of the length-weight relationships (LWRs) were 3.50 for female and 3.49 for male. The length-length relationship (LLRs) between the three length measurements (TL-FL-SL) were highly correlated (r2>0.99, P<0.001). This study presented the first reference on LWRs and LLRs for Mediterranean shad species from NE Mediterranean coast of Turkey. © 2011 Academic Journals

    On the occurrence of the pelagic stingray Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte, 1832) (Chondrichthyes: Dasyatidae) in the eastern Mediterranean basin, Turkey

    A single female specimen of Pteroplatytrygon violacea (Bonaparte, 1832) was incidentally captured on sandy/muddy bottom approximately at a depth of 40 m from Çevlik, Iskenderun Bay, Turkey on 21 March 2016 by a commercial trawler. After the capture, the fresh specimen was identified, photographed, measured to the nearest millimetre, and weighed to the nearest gram. This particular individual of P. violacea measured 950 mm total length (TL) with disc width (DW) of 403 mm and weighed 3940 g. This is the first report of P. violacea from the north eastern Mediterranean (Turkey). Thus, the present study is an indication of the occurrence of P. violacea in the eastern Mediterranean Sea coast of Turkey. © Biharean Biologist, Oradea, Romania, 2018

    Three specimens (1 male and 2 females) of royal flagfin Aulopus filamentosus (Bloch, 1792) were caught at a depth of 184 m off Erdemli, Mersin Bay (northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey) in June 2015. The present paper reports the first occurrence and is the confirmation of royal flagfin A. filamentosus from the northeastern Mediterranean Sea, Turkey. Since it has been recorded only once in the last sixty years, this species could be considered as exceptionally rare in the easternmost area of the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey. © The Author(s) 2018

    The study investigated the age, growth and sex ratio of Tinca tinca L., 1758 in Seyhan Dam Lake, Turkey and determined its first population structure data in the lake. Fishermen had introduced tinca into the lake between 2001 and 2002. A total of 1284 T. tinca (778 males and 506 females) were captured between January and December 2007 by gill nets of various mesh sizes. The sex ratio was 1: 1.53 females to males. Total lengths and weights ranged from 12 to 29 cm and 27 to 403.3 g. Ages in both sexes ranged from 1 to 5 years. For all individuals the length-weight relation and von Bertalanffy growth parameters were W = 0.063 × L2.51 (r = 0.981), and L? = 50.86 cm, k = 0.112 year-1, to = -1.551 year. © 2010 Blackwell Verlag, Berlin
