On the attractors of two-dimensional Rayleigh oscillators including noise
We study sustained oscillations in two-dimensional oscillator systems driven
by Rayleigh-type negative friction. In particular we investigate the influence
of mismatch of the two frequencies. Further we study the influence of external
noise and nonlinearity of the conservative forces. Our consideration is
restricted to the case that the driving is rather weak and that the forces show
only weak deviations from radial symmetry. For this case we provide results for
the attractors and the bifurcations of the system. We show that for rational
relations of the frequencies the system develops several rotational excitations
with right/left symmetry, corresponding to limit cycles in the four-dimensional
phase space. The corresponding noisy distributions have the form of hoops or
tires in the four-dimensional space. For irrational frequency relations, as
well as for increasing strength of driving or noise the periodic excitations
are replaced by chaotic oscillations.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

An interactive atlas for marine biodiversity conservation in the Coral Triangle
An online atlas of the Coral Triangle region of the Indo-Pacific
biogeographic realm was developed. This online atlas consists of the three
interlinked parts: (1) Biodiversity Features; (2) Areas of Importance for
Biodiversity Conservation; (3) recommended priorities for Marine Protected
Area (MPA) Network Expansion (http://www.marine.auckland.ac.nz/CTMAPS).
The first map, Biodiversity Features, provides comprehensive data on the
region's marine protected areas and biodiversity features, threats, and
environmental characteristics. The second provides spatial information on
areas of high biodiversity conservation values, while the third map shows
priority areas for expanding the current Coral Triangle MPA network. This
atlas provides the most comprehensive biodiversity datasets that have been
assembled for the region. The datasets were retrieved and generated
systematically from various open-access sources. To engage a wider audience
and to raise participation in biodiversity conservation, the maps were
designed as an interactive and online atlas. This atlas presents
representative information to promote a better understanding of the key
marine and coastal biodiversity characteristics of the region and enables the
application of marine biodiversity informatics to support marine
ecosystem-based management in the Coral Triangle region.</p
Gaia on-board metrology: basic angle and best focus
The Gaia payload ensures maximum passive stability using a single material,
SiC, for most of its elements. Dedicated metrology instruments are, however,
required to carry out two functions: monitoring the basic angle and refocusing
the telescope. Two interferometers fed by the same laser are used to measure
the basic angle changes at the level of as (prad, micropixel), which is
the highest level ever achieved in space. Two Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensors,
combined with an ad-hoc analysis of the scientific data are used to define and
reach the overall best-focus. In this contribution, the systems, data analysis,

Quantum-sl(2) action on a divided-power quantum plane at even roots of unity
We describe a nonstandard version of the quantum plane, the one in the basis
of divided powers at an even root of unity . It can be regarded
as an extension of the "nearly commutative" algebra with by nilpotents. For this quantum plane, we construct a Wess--Zumino-type de
Rham complex and find its decomposition into representations of the
-dimensional quantum group and its Lusztig extension; the
quantum group action is also defined on the algebra of quantum differential

How to Approach Para-Aortic Lymph Node Metastases During Exploration for Suspected Periampullary Carcinoma:Resection or Bypass?
Background: Intraoperative para-aortic lymph node (PALN) sampling during surgical exploration in patients with suspected pancreatic head cancer remains controversial. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the value of routine PALN sampling and the consequences of different treatment strategies on overall patient survival. Methods: A retrospective, multicenter cohort study was performed in patients who underwent surgical exploration for suspected pancreatic head cancer. In cohort A, the treatment strategy was to avoid pancreatoduodenectomy and to perform a double bypass procedure when PALN metastases were found during exploration. In cohort B, routinely harvested PALNs were not examined intraoperatively and pancreatoduodenectomy was performed regardless. PALNs were examined with the final resection specimen. Clinicopathological data, survival data and complication data were compared between study groups. Results: Median overall survival for patients with PALN metastases who underwent a double bypass procedure was 7.0 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.5–8.5), versus 11 months (95% CI 8.8–13) in the pancreatoduodenectomy group (p = 0.049). Patients with PALN metastases who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy had significantly increased postoperative morbidity compared with patients who underwent a double bypass procedure (p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, severe comorbidity (ASA grade 2 or higher) was an independent predictor for decreased survival in patients with PALN involvement (hazard ratio 3.607, 95% CI 1.678–7.751; p = 0.001). Conclusion: In patients with PALN metastases, pancreatoduodenectomy was associated with significant survival benefit compared with a double bypass procedure, but with increased risk of complications. It is important to weigh the advantages of resection versus bypass against factors such as comorbidities and clinical performance when positive intraoperative PALNs are found
