    Congratulations to the Center and its Director, Dr. Laura Gitlin, on the inaugural issue of CARAH’s newsletter. In our discussions of the development of CARAH, one of the principal goals of the Center is its educational mission as is clear from the other information contained in this publication. Committed as the Center’s research professionals are to improving the health and quality of life of our seniors, it is not enough to conduct research that has the potential to provide significant help and support for patients and their caregivers. Those findings must also be disseminated, must be translated into action, must be available to those most in need of that information, and as widely as possible. The newsletter is one approach the Center is initiating in order to achieve its educational mission. As important as the newsletter is to advancing the goals of CARAH, it is equally valuable in advancing the mission of Jefferson College of Health Professions (JCHP), within which CARAH resides. The future of health care depends very heavily on the contributions of several disciplines to meet the needs of patients, most especially the needs of our senior patients. The College places the highest priority on the development of health professionals who are ready upon graduation to work as a member of a team in the provision of care. CARAH has adopted this interdisciplinary approach in all of its activities, and is collaborating with several departments not only in JCHP (Occupational and Physical Therapy and Nursing) but also with Jefferson Medical College (and its Farber Institute of the Neurosciences and the Depts. of Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology). The Center thus becomes an ideal site to nurture the growth and development of these interdisciplinary values and experiences. The potential, then, for enhancing and expanding the effectiveness of team care through interdisciplinary educational experiences, for hastening the translation of the findings of the research being conducted in CARAH to the care of elderly patients especially, is a goal that coincides superbly with the mission of the College and University. It is thus my pleasure to welcome the advent of this newsletter as a remarkable opportunity to support the development and expansion of the programs of CARAH that are so clearly connected to and supportive of the Jefferson mission

    Estimates of Harvest Potential and Distribution of the Deep Sea Red Crab, Chaceon quinquedens, in the North Central Gulf of Mexico

    Harvest potential, relative abundance, and geographic and bathymetric distribution are discussed for the red crab, Chaceon quinquedens, in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico. Harvest potential is expressed as the number of trapable crabs present on fishing grounds defined as depths ranging from 677 m to 1043 m between 87.5o and 88.5oW longitude. Using various estimates of the effective fishing area (EFA) of a trap, the number of trapable red crabs on the fishing grounds ranged from 3.7 x 106 to 10.7 x 106. Estimatesofcrabnumberssuggest there is a potential for commercial harvest in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico, east of the Mississippi River. However, fishery development must take into consideration the preponderance of females on the defined fishing grounds (MF ratio = 1:2.1) and the high incidence of ovigerous females (~20%) during much of the year. Females generally dominated at all depth strata, but the proportion of males to females increased with depth. Reduced numbers of red crabs were collected off the western Louisiana coast and a shift in depth distribution was found. Minimum upper depth limit for red crabs west of the Mississippi River was 860 m as compared to 677 m east of the River. The known range of C. fenneri is extended to 92o12 W longitude

    Helicobacter hepaticus infection in mice: models for understanding lower bowel inflammation and cancer

    Pioneering work in the 1990s first linked a novel microaerobic bacterium, Helicobacter hepaticus, with chronic active hepatitis and inflammatory bowel disease in several murine models. Targeted H. hepaticus infection experiments subsequently demonstrated its ability to induce colitis, colorectal cancer, and extraintestinal diseases in a number of mouse strains with defects in immune function and/or regulation. H. hepaticus is now widely utilized as a model system to dissect how intestinal microbiota interact with the host to produce both inflammatory and tolerogenic responses. This model has been used to make important advances in understanding factors that regulate both acquired and innate immune response within the intestine. Further, it has been an effective tool to help define the function of regulatory T cells, including their ability to directly inhibit the innate inflammatory response to gut microbiota. The complete genomic sequence of H. hepaticus has advanced the identification of several virulence factors and aided in the elucidation of H. hepaticus pathogenesis.     Bioactive nutrients - Time for tolerable upper intake levels to address safety.

    There is increasing interest by consumers, researchers, and regulators into the roles that certain bioactive compounds, derived from plants and other natural sources, can play in health maintenance and promotion, and even prolonging a productive quality of life. Research has rapidly emerged suggesting that a wide range of compounds and mixtures in and from plants (such as fruits and vegetables, tea and cocoa) and animals (such as fish and probiotics) may exert substantial health benefits. There is interest in exploring the possibility of establishing recommended intakes or dietary guidance for certain bioactive substances to help educate consumers. A key aspect of establishing dietary guidance is the assessment of safety/toxicity of these substances. Toxicologists need to be involved in both the development of the safety framework and in the evaluation of the science to establish maximum intake/upper limits

    Jejunal Perforation following Screening Colonoscopy

    Colonoscopy is rarely associated with complications such as colonic perforation. Perforation of the small bowel is extremely rare, especially if the procedure is done without therapeutic interventions. Several factors are associated with this entity. Perforation of the ileum has been reported, but proximal jejunal perforation secondary to rupture of jejunal diverticulum during colonoscopy has not been reported. We present the case of an 88-year-old patient who developed abdominal pain after undergoing colonoscopy without any additional interventions. Urgent exploration revealed perforation of the proximal jejunum secondary to rupture of a jejunal diverticulum. No therapy or biopsies were undertaken during the colonoscopy, which are known predisposing factors
