    Effect of breastfeeding on common pediatric infections: a 5-year prospective cohort study

Objective. the aim of the present study was to address the association between breastfeeding duration and common infectious diseases in the children until 5 years of age to show long-term protective effects of the breast milk. Population and Methods. the study included 411 infants who were born in Rize (Turkey) between January 2011 and December 2011. the present prospective-cohort study lasted for 5 years and 11 interviews were conducted with each mother of the infants during this period. the infants were divided into two groups as those who were breastfed more and less than 12 months and the association between breastfeeding and infections such as acute otitis media, acute gastroenteritis, acute respiratory tract infections and acute urinary system infections was investigated. Results. of 270 infants 193 (71.5%) were breastfed longer than 12 months and 77 (28.5%) were breastfed less than 12 months. Infants in the first group had less acute otitis media and acute gastroenteritis (n=77, 28.52%) when compared with the infants breastfed less than 12 months during 5-year period (p < 0.05). Conclusions. the present study detected that breastfeeding duration longer than 12 months significantly reduces the common childhood infections such as otitis media and gastroenteritis during the first 5 years of life

    A Novel Approach for Monitoring of Smart Greenhouse and Flowerpot Parameters and Detection of Plant Growth with Sensors

    Studies carried out in different parts of the world and in different climatic conditions have made it clear that it is very important to use smart technologies in solving the problems experienced in the field of agriculture globally and locally. Another important aim of the studies is to ensure that agricultural products are grown in smart greenhouse environments outside of arable lands. For this reason, growing agricultural products in greenhouses controlled by smart systems by creating suitable soil and climatic conditions and facilitating people&rsquo;s access to these products has been an important research and application subject. In this paper, the topics of &ldquo;Smart Agriculture&rdquo; and &ldquo;Smart Greenhouse&rdquo; were worked on. Therefore, a prototype of a smart greenhouse was constructed. Then, it was programmed according to the decided climatic conditions. Consequently, the main aim of this study was to improve the project according to the collected data by the sensors. One of the most important aims of our study was to question the possibility of growing different plants in the same greenhouse. In this context, in our study, a flower and three different vegetables with close growing conditions were grown in the same greenhouse in the same environment. These plants were grown individually both in the smart greenhouse prototype and in the pots outdoors in a natural environment. The differences between the two environments and the differences in the development of the plants were examined and the necessary results were obtained based on the findings. Based on the results obtained, it has been discussed what can be done if the plants grown in the greenhouse, of which we have created a small-scale prototype, are grown in a large-scale smart greenhouse. According to the results obtained, the smart greenhouse made a positive difference in the development of begonia, tomato and pepper. Although, the cucumbers grew more in the pots. In the study, it was observed that the plants were healthier in the smart greenhouse. The cucumbers in the greenhouse grew to 132 mm, the peppers to 61 mm and the tomatoes to 70 mm. The cucumbers in the pot grew to 163 mm, the peppers to 37 mm and the tomatoes to 60 mm. This shows that the yield was positively affected in the smart greenhouse. According to the collected results, the smart greenhouse system saved approximately 16.5% of water compared to the pot. The fact that the system can work both manually and autonomously provides a great convenience for the person controlling the greenhouse

    Introduction: The objective of the present study was to determine educational level of the workers of a tea factory on occupational health and safety and to reveal the factors affecting a healthy lifestyle.Methods: The present descriptive research was carried out in a tea factory where 352 workers are employed between December 2016 and January 2017. 303 volunteer workers were enrolled into the study and a questionnaire form including topics of sociodemographic characteristics, occupational health and safety (OHS) implementations, health state and working conditions that was developed through literature information as well as Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale (HLBS) were used for data analysis. Results: Age average of the workers who were all male was 39.88±5.53. Among the workers, 70.29% were elementary school graduate and more than half of the participants (62.70%) have a middle income (500-1,000 USD). Mean score of HLBS scale was 118.00±20.28 points. Average score of the sub-topics was the highest in health responsibility item with 22.06 points whereas the lowest score was detected in physical activity sub-topic.  It was detected that 64.69% of the workers had an occupational health and safety training at least once during their lifetime and 21.78% use a protective equipment. Rate of exposure to work-related accidents was detected as 10.57%

    Integrated approaches in resilient hierarchical load forecasting via TCN and optimal valley filling based demand response application for clean energy adoption

In this manner, predictive analysis of the demanded power accuracy is carried out to boost profits and increase the penetration of similar demand response (DR) programs across all levels of end-user categories. Residential loads experience stiff spikes and unpredictable variations due to occupancy activities and environmental factors. To address this, we first propose a robust short-term multivariate-multistep forecasting framework that is resilient to missing or erroneous data, employing temporal convolution networks (TCNs). We then incorporate two distinct valley-filling indices to optimize the charging of electric vehicle loads according to DR requirements, showcasing the efficacy of leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the utilization of clean energy resources. Simulation studies are conducted using real-world nodal residential loads with hourly granularity. The results demonstrate that the forecasting method is reliable for residential locations, even when dealing with highly damaged data. The case studies effectively fill the load into the valleys and minimize fluctuations in residential locations. Through the integration of emission- aware forecasting and optimization strategies, our study lays the groundwork for a comprehensive approach that not only improves economic outcomes and grid stability but also advances the imperative of reducing carbon emissions

    \u3cp\u3eThere is a remarkable potential for implementing demand response (DR) strategies for several purposes, such as peak load reduction, frequency regulation, etc., by using thermostatically controllable appliances. In this paper, an end-user comfort violation minimization oriented DR strategy for residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units is proposed. The proposed approach manipulates the temperature set-point of HVAC thermostats aiming to minimize the average discomfort among end-users enrolled in an DR program, while satisfying the DR event related requirements of the load serving entity. Besides, the fairness of the allocation of the comfort violation among the enrolled end-users is also taken into account. Moreover, maintaining the load factor during the contracted DR period compared to a base case in order to reduce the load rebound effect due to shifting the use of HVAC units is also considered within the proposed strategy. Last but not least, the heat index that considers the impact of humidity is utilized instead of using ambient dry-bulb temperature through a spatio-temporal forecasting approach.\u3c/p\u3
