The aim of this study was to investigate the possibilities of application of in vitro micrografting method in vines. In the study, shoot tips with apical meristem and 1–2 leafprimordia of Early Cardinal and Yalova incisi were grafted on the cut surface of the hypocotyls of Dogridge, Salt Creek, 1613 C and 41 B American rootstocks under aseptic conditions. From all the grafting combinations tested grafted plants were produced at different rates of success. The best results were obtained from Early Cardinal/41 B and Early Cardinal/Salt Creek combinations with 80% and 71.4% grafting success rates, respectively. Considering the other characteristics Early Cardinal combinations produce better results than Yalova incisi. © 2003 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

Characterization of some fruit quality characteristics and flower type in strawberry

Turkey still uses foreign varieties in strawberry growing and pays money for patent rights for each plant. The market requires strawberry varieties with high yield, large fruit, long storage life and having a good appearance and good taste. For these reasons, we aimed to create an F1 population between cultivar 'Ottoman' (male sterile) and cultivar 'Camarosa' (hermaphrodite), which exhibits many opposite characters to eachother. In addition, we aimed to characterize them with important characters for further genetic studies in strawberry which will provide a transition from classical breeding to a modern one in strawberry. In this study, F1 seedlings and their parents were characterized based on the fruit yield, fruit weight, fruit firmness, sugar (fructose, glucose and sucrose), acid (malic, citric and ascorbic) contents and flower type in 200 F1 seedlings

Comparison of plant types on some fruit quality characteristics of new strawberry cultivars in Turkey

In this study, it was aimed to compare 6 various commercial strawberry cultivars (‘Kabarla’, ‘Sweet Ann’, ‘Rubygem’, ‘Festival’, ‘Amiga’, ‘Florida Fortuna’) based on their some fruit quality characteristics in Diyarbakır region (south-eastern) of Turkey. The frigo and fresh plants of 6 strawberry cultivars were compared during the 2015-2016 growing year period. Some important fruit quality characteristics such as total soluble solid content (TSS%), titratable acidity, fruit colour, fruit firmness (Lb) were compared and some phenological characteristics such as first blooming, 50% flowering and full flowering time were also compared. Most of the cultivars have advantage when they are cultivated with frigo plant type in terms of first flowering date except ‘Festival’ and ‘Sweet Ann’. Most quality parameters were affected by cultivar, plant type and their interaction such as TSS, TTA and, L* value. When using the fresh plant type there are more advantages for certain quality parameters (acidity % and TSS %) and brightness (L*). The other parameters were observed better for the frigo plant type. ‘Sweet Ann’ was detected the most preferable one among the experimental cultivars for Diyarbakır ecologic conditions of the eastern part of Turkey. © 2019 International Society for Horticultural Science.
