On Gordon Lish's Editing of Raymond Carver's What We Talk About When We Talk About Love Introduction In April 1981, when What We Talk About When We Talk About Love appeared, Raymond Carver was still little known to wider audiences and few could predict that he was soon to be acclaimed as the “American Chekhov” and the father of literary Minimalism. Yet, those seventeen short fragments managed to reinvigorate the realistic trend of the short-story with their spare and laconic portrait of small-town America: a portrait free of condescendence, irony, or denunciation, yet full of hopeless desolation. That collection’s pared-down narrative has come to represent for many readers Raymond Carver’s stylistic trademark, although it undeniably marks a “minimalistic” peak in his career, and a point of no return. It is precisely in relation to that minimalism that we shall reconsider the role played in the collection’s final output by Gordon Lish, Carver’s longtime editor and friend. To do so, we shall analyze the scope and the extent of Lish’s editorial work on the collection, as it is now visible in the archives of the Lilly Library at Indiana University

    Dwelling upon Metaphors: Translating William Gass’s Novellas

    Full text: http://ojs.ub.gu.se/ojs/index.php/njes/article/view/56/60International audienceThis paper presents a contextual analysis of metaphor translation in literary discourse, with reference to William Gass’s Cartesian Sonata & Other Novellas (New York: Knopf, 1998). Due to its deep formal investigation of language and vivid imagery, this work of fiction raises several interesting issues in its translation. My focus is on the way linguistic metaphors reinforce each other throughout the text and on how they relate–and contribute–to the theme and tone of the whole collection, thus imposing further constraints on their translatability. The Cartesian dualism between mind and matter is exposed and revitalized in metaphorical language. The dense layering of information within innovative metaphors, strategies of foregrounding and the strong musical quality of Gass’s prose require a willingness on the part of the translator to negotiate their cognitive and stylistic significance in the face of the natural asymmetry of languages. In order to articulate this point, some examples have been drawn from my unpublished Italian translation of these novellas

    Sequeval: A Framework to Assess and Benchmark Sequence-based Recommender Systems

    In this paper, we present sequeval, a software tool capable of performing the offline evaluation of a recommender system designed to suggest a sequence of items. A sequence-based recommender is trained considering the sequences already available in the system and its purpose is to generate a personalized sequence starting from an initial seed. This tool automatically evaluates the sequence-based recommender considering a comprehensive set of eight different metrics adapted to the sequential scenario. sequeval has been developed following the best practices of software extensibility. For this reason, it is possible to easily integrate and evaluate novel recommendation techniques. sequeval is publicly available as an open source tool and it aims to become a focal point for the community to assess sequence-based recommender systems.Comment: REVEAL 2018 Workshop on Offline Evaluation for Recommender System

Pour essayerde répondre à cette question, j’ai choisi d’analyser l’impact des traductions dans le dernierquadrimestre de l’année 2010, dans trois importants suppléments littéraires hebdomadaires : TheNew York Times Book Review aux États-Unis, Le Monde des livres en France et Domenica (Sole24 ore) en Italie. Une analyse quantitative et qualitative de ce corpus – qui prend en comptesurtout la visibilité des traductions/ traducteurs, la nature des critiques des traductions et laprésence d’articles/ annonces autour de la traduction – va nous offrir un aperçu des analogies etdes différences dans la réception de la littérature traduite dans ces trois pays. Abstract : How does translation resonate in today’s cultural press? To give an answer to this question, I chose to analyse the impact that translations had in the last four months of 2010 in three important weekly literary supplements: The New York Times Book Review in the United States, Le Monde des livres in France et Domenica (Sole 24 ore) in Italy. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of such corpus – focusing mostly on the visibility of translators/translations, the extent and nature of translation criticism, as well as the presence of articles/news about translation – may offer insights into similarities and differences in the reception of translated literature in the three countries

    We classify extremal curves in free nilpotent Lie groups. The classification is obtained via an explicit integration of the adjoint equation in Pontryagin Maximum Principle. It turns out that abnormal extremals are precisely the horizontal curves contained in algebraic varieties of a specific type.     La presente tesi analizza la realizzabilità di veicoli semoventi ed a geometria variabile che movendo in uno spazio 3D un end-effecter solidale con una fotocamera abbiano la possibilità di controllare, tramite processi di aggiornamento periodici, le posizioni raggiunte ed assunte dallo stesso e l’inseguimento di traiettorie ottimali da imporre tramite progressive ripianificazioni di percorsi. Il controllo avviene grazie all’elaborazione di immagini di ripresa di una struttura landmarkica. La tesi individua una particolare struttura capace di orientarsi verso la fotocamera ed una procedura che, avvalendosi di aspetti statistici ispirati dagli schemi previsti per i filtri osservatori, permette di attuare il tipo di controllo desiderato. Present Thesis analyzes achievability of self-propelled and geometry varied vehicles which move one end-effecter linked camera into a 3D space. The vehicles have the checking ability, by means periodic updating processes, upon the positions and orientation assumed by the camera and the control possibility upon optimal trajectories to bee followed by means progressive paths planning again. Control happens thanks images elaboration of a photographed landmarkic structure . Thesis recognizes a particular structure able to orient himself toward the camera and a statistical procedure inspired by the schemes for the observer filters which allow to achieve the desired control
