Citizenship studies: An introduction
About the book: From women's rights, civil rights, and sexual rights for gays and lesbians to disability rights and language rights, we have experienced in the past few decades a major trend in Western nation-states towards new claims for inclusion. This trend has echoed around the world: from the Zapatistas to Chechen and Kurdish nationalists, social and political movements are framing their struggles in the languages of rights and recognition, and hence, of citizenship.
Citizenship has thus become an increasingly important axis in the social sciences. Social scientists have been rethinking the role of political agent or subject. Holographic characterization of chain photopolymerization

The technique allows detailed quantification of the chemical parameters, including their variation from the Trommsdorff effect. Permutation Trellis Coded Multi-level FSK Signaling to Mitigate Primary User Interference in Cognitive Radio Networks
We employ Permutation Trellis Code (PTC) based multi-level Frequency Shift
Keying signaling to mitigate the impact of Primary Users (PUs) on the
performance of Secondary Users (SUs) in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs). The
PUs are assumed to be dynamic in that they appear intermittently and stay
active for an unknown duration. Our approach is based on the use of PTC
combined with multi-level FSK modulation so that an SU can improve its data
rate by increasing its transmission bandwidth while operating at low power and
not creating destructive interference for PUs. We evaluate system performance
by obtaining an approximation for the actual Bit Error Rate (BER) using
properties of the Viterbi decoder and carry out a thorough performance analysis
in terms of BER and throughput. The results show that the proposed coded system
achieves i) robustness by ensuring that SUs have stable throughput in the
presence of heavy PU interference and ii) improved resiliency of SU links to
interference in the presence of multiple dynamic PUs.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figure
A Search for Vector Diquarks at the CERN LHC
Resonant production of the first generation vector diquarks at the CERN Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) is investigated. It is shown that the LHC will be able to
discover vector diquarks with masses up to 9 TeV for quark-diquark-quark
coupling alpha_(D)=0.1 and 4 TeV for alpha_(D)=5x10^(-4).Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 4 figure
Self-written waveguides in photopolymerizable resins
We study the optically-induced growth and interaction of self-written
waveguides in a photopolymerizable resin. We investigate experimentally how the
interaction depends on the mutual coherence and relative power of the input
beams, and suggest an improved analytical model that describes the growth of
single self-written waveguides and the main features of their interaction in

Measurement of the Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of the Xe Atom
We report on a new measurement of the CP-violating permanent Electric Dipole
Moment (EDM) of the neutral Xe atom. Our experimental approach is based
on the detection of the free precession of co-located nuclear spin-polarized
He and Xe samples. The EDM measurement sensitivity benefits
strongly from long spin coherence times of several hours achieved in diluted
gases and homogeneous weak magnetic fields of about 400~nT. A finite EDM is
indicated by a change in the precession frequency, as an electric field is
periodically reversed with respect to the magnetic guiding field. Our result,
ecm, is consistent with zero and is
used to place a new upper limit on the Xe EDM: ecm (95% C.L.). We also discuss the implications of this result for
various CP-violating observables as they relate to theories of physics beyond
the standard model

Differences in telomere length between sporadic and familial cutaneous melanoma
BACKGROUND:
Several pieces of evidence indicate that a complex relationship exists between constitutional telomere length (TL) and the risk of cutaneous melanoma. Although the general perception is that longer telomeres increase melanoma risk, some studies do not support this association. We hypothesise that discordant data are due to the characteristics of the studied populations.
OBJECTIVES:
To evaluate the association of telomere length with familial and sporadic melanoma.
METHODS:
TL was measured by multiplex quantitative PCR in leukocytes from 310 melanoma patients according to familial/sporadic and single/multiple cancers and 216 age-matched controls.
RESULTS:
Patients with sporadic melanoma were found to have shorter telomeres as compared to those with familial melanoma. In addition, shorter telomeres, while tending to reduce the risk of familial melanoma regardless of single or multiple tumors, nearly trebled the risk of single sporadic melanoma.
CONCLUSIONS:
This is the first time that TL has been correlated to opposite effects on melanoma risk according to the presence or absence of familial predisposition. Aberrant islet unfolded protein response in type 2 diabetes
The endoplasmic reticulum adapts to fluctuations in demand and copes with stress through an adaptive signaling cascade called the unfolded protein response (UPR). Accumulating evidence indicates that the canonical UPR is critical to the survival and function of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells, and alterations in the UPR may contribute to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. However, the dynamic regulation of UPR molecules in the islets of animal models and humans with type 2 diabetes remains to be elucidated. Here, we analyzed the expression of activating factor 6 (ATF6α) and spliced X-box binding protein 1 (sXBP1), and phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2α), to evaluate the three distinct branches of the UPR in the pancreatic islets of mice with diet- or genetic-induced obesity and insulin resistance. ATF6 and sXBP1 expression was predominantly found in the β-cells, where hyperglycemia coincided with a decline in expression in both experimental models and in humans with type 2 diabetes. These data suggest alterations in the expression of UPR mediators may contribute to the decline in islet function in type 2 diabetes in mice and humans
