Phase Variation in the Pulse Profile of SMC X-1
We present the results of timing and spectral analysis of X-ray high state
observations of the high-mass X-ray pulsar SMC X-1 with Chandra, XMM-Newton,
and ROSAT, taken between 1991 and 2001. The source has L_X ~ 3-5 x 10^38
ergs/s, and the spectra can be modeled as a power law plus blackbody with kT_BB
\~ 0.18 keV and reprocessed emission radius R_BB ~ 2 x 10^8 cm, assuming a
distance of 60 kpc to the source. Energy-resolved pulse profiles show several
distinct forms, more than half of which include a second pulse in the soft
profile, previously documented only in hard energies. We also detect
significant variation in the phase shift between hard and soft pulses, as has
recently been reported in Her X-1. We suggest an explanation for the observed
characteristics of the soft pulses in terms of precession of the accretion
disk.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL; v2 minor

Microwave-induced excess quasiparticles in superconducting resonators measured through correlated conductivity fluctuations
We have measured the number of quasiparticles and their lifetime in aluminium
superconducting microwave resonators. The number of excess quasiparticles below
160 mK decreases from 72 to 17 m with a 6 dB decrease of the
microwave power. The quasiparticle lifetime increases accordingly from 1.4 to
3.5 ms. These properties of the superconductor were measured through the
spectrum of correlated fluctuations in the quasiparticle system and condensate
of the superconductor, which show up in the resonator amplitude and phase
respectively. Because uncorrelated noise sources vanish, fluctuations in the
superconductor can be studied with a sensitivity close to the vacuum noise
Semimetalic antiferromagnetism in the half-Heusler compound CuMnSb
The half-Heusler compound CuMnSb, the first antiferromagnet (AFM) in the
Mn-based class of Heuslers and half-Heuslers that contains several conventional
and half metallic ferromagnets, shows a peculiar stability of its magnetic
order in high magnetic fields. Density functional based studies reveal an
unusual nature of its unstable (and therefore unseen) paramagnetic state, which
for one electron less (CuMnSn, for example) would be a zero gap semiconductor
(accidentally so) between two sets of very narrow, topologically separate bands
of Mn 3d character. The extremely flat Mn 3d bands result from the environment:
Mn has four tetrahedrally coordinated Cu atoms whose 3d states lie well below
the Fermi level, and the other four tetrahedrally coordinated sites are empty,
leaving chemically isolated Mn 3d states. The AFM phase can be pictured
heuristically as a self-doped CuMnSb compensated semimetal
with heavy mass electrons and light mass holes, with magnetic coupling
proceeding through Kondo and/or antiKondo coupling separately through the two
carrier types. The ratio of the linear specific heat coefficient and the
calculated Fermi level density of states indicates a large mass enhancement
, or larger if a correlated band structure is taken as the
reference
Number fluctuations of sparse quasiparticles in a superconductor
We have directly measured quasiparticle number fluctuations in a thin film
superconducting Al resonator in thermal equilibrium. The spectrum of these
fluctuations provides a measure of both the density and the lifetime of the
quasiparticles. We observe that the quasiparticle density decreases
exponentially with decreasing temperature, as theoretically predicted, but
saturates below 160 mK to 25-55 per cubic micron. We show that this saturation
is consistent with the measured saturation in the quasiparticle lifetime, which
also explains similar observations in qubit decoherence times
3D Dune Skeleton Model as a Coupled Dynamical System of 2D Cross-Sections
To analyze theoretically the stability of the shape and the migration process
of transverse dunes and barchans, we propose a {\it skeleton model} of 3D dunes
described with coupled dynamics of 2D cross-sections. First, 2D cross-sections
of a 3D dune parallel to the wind direction are extracted as elements of a
skeleton of the 3D dune, hence, the dynamics of each and interaction between
them is considered. This model simply describes the essential dynamics of 3D
dunes as a system of coupled ordinary differential equations. Using the model
we study the stability of the shape of 3D transversal dunes and their
deformation to barchans depending on the amount of available sand in the dune
field, sand flow in parallel and perpendicular to wind direction.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, lette
Modulation Induced Phase Transition from Fractional Quantum Hall to Stripe State at nu=5/3
We have investigated the effect of unidirectional periodic potential
modulation on the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at filling factors nu=5/3
and 4/3. For large enough modulation amplitude, we find that the resistivity
minimum at nu=5/3 gives way to a peak that grows with decreasing temperature.
Density matrix renormalization group calculation reveals that phase transition
from FQH state to unidirectional striped state having a period sim 4 l (with l
the magnetic length) takes place at nu=1/3 (equivalent to nu=5/3 by the
particle-hole symmetry) with the increase of the modulation amplitude,
suggesting that the observed peak is the manifestation of the stripe phase.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; minor revisio
Commensurability oscillations in the rf conductivity of unidirectional lateral superlattices: measurement of anisotropic conductivity by coplanar waveguide
We have measured the rf magnetoconductivity of unidirectional lateral
superlattices (ULSLs) by detecting the attenuation of microwave through a
coplanar waveguide placed on the surface. ULSL samples with the principal axis
of the modulation perpendicular (S_perp) and parallel (S_||) to the microwave
electric field are examined. For low microwave power, we observe expected
anisotropic behavior of the commensurability oscillations (CO), with CO in
samples S_perp and S_|| dominated by the diffusion and the collisional
contributions, respectively. Amplitude modulation of the Shubnikov-de Haas
oscillations is observed to be more prominent in sample S_||. The difference
between the two samples is washed out with the increase of the microwave power,
letting the diffusion contribution govern the CO in both samples. The failure
of the intended directional selectivity in the conductivity measured with high
microwave power is interpreted in terms of large-angle electron-phonon
scattering.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Effect of Oscillating Landau Bandwidth on the Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a Unidirectional Lateral Superlattice
We have measured activation gaps for odd-integer quantum Hall states in a
unidirectional lateral superlattice (ULSL) -- a two-dimensional electron gas
(2DEG) subjected to a unidirectional periodic modulation of the electrostatic
potential. By comparing the activation gaps with those simultaneously measured
in the adjacent section of the same 2DEG sample without modulation, we find
that the gaps are reduced in the ULSL by an amount corresponding to the width
acquired by the Landau levels through the introduction of the modulation. The
decrement of the activation gap varies with the magnetic field following the
variation of the Landau bandwidth due to the commensurability effect. Notably,
the decrement vanishes at the flat band conditions.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, minor revisio
Photon noise limited radiation detection with lens-antenna coupled Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors
Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) have shown great potential for
sub-mm instrumentation because of the high scalability of the technology. Here
we demonstrate for the first time in the sub-mm band (0.1...2 mm) a photon
noise limited performance of a small antenna coupled MKID detector array and we
describe the relation between photon noise and MKID intrinsic
generation-recombination noise. Additionally we use the observed photon noise
to measure the optical efficiency of detectors to be 0.8+-0.2.Comment: The following article has been submitted to AP
Timing and spectral studies of the transient X-ray pulsar EXO 053109-6609.2 with ASCA and Beppo-SAX
We report timing and spectral properties of the transient Be X-ray pulsar EXO
053109--6609.2 studied using observations made with the ASCA and BeppoSAX
observatories. Though there must have been at least one spin-down episode of
the pulsar since its discovery, the new pulse period measurements show a
monotonic spin-up trend since 1996. The pulse profile is found to have marginal
energy dependence. There is also evidence for strong luminosity dependence of
the pulse profile, a single peaked profile at low luminosity that changes to a
double peaked profile at high luminosity. This suggests a change in the
accretion pattern at certain luminosity level. The X-ray spectrum is found to
consist of a simple power-law with photon index in the range of 0.4--0.8. At
high intensity level the spectrum also shows presence of weak iron emission
line.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
