    The associations between motivational climate, basic psychological needs and dropout in volleyball - a comparison across competitive levels

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of motivational climate for the satisfaction of psychological needs and dropout in recreational, intermediate and elite volleyball. Seven thousand nine hundred thirty six volleyball players from all 321 volleyball clubs across Denmark were invited to participate in the study. Three thousand three thirty answered the questionnaire and 2150 were included in the analysis. Dropout from Volleyball was measured as the proportion of players that had stopped playing volleyball over the last year. The coach-created motivational climate was measured using the Motivational Climate Scale for Youth Sports. The satisfaction of players' psychological needs was measured using an adapted version of the basic psychological needs in exercise scale. The psychometric scales were validated and showed good model fit. For volleyball players of all levels, the degree of mastery climate predicted the satisfaction of the players' basic psychological needs satisfaction during volleyball which was, in turn, associated with lower dropout rates. Performance climate had a weak negative association with the satisfaction of psychological needs on the intermediate level only. When adjusting the models for the negative association between performance climate and mastery climate this negative association became nonsignificant and a weak positive association to needs satisfaction emerged for players at the elite level. Findings confirm that the coach-created mastery climate in volleyball teams is important for the satisfaction of players' basic psychological needs and continuation within the sport across the recreational, intermediate and elite levels. HighlightsCoach-created mastery climate in volleyball teams was positively associated with the satisfaction of the players' basic psychological and negatively associated with dropout.These associations between coach created climate, need satisfaction and dropout were similar across different sporting levels.Performance orientation had little influence and seemed mainly problematic if it was at the expense of mastery climate

    Are team sport games more motivating than individual exercise for middle-aged women? a comparison of levels of motivation associated with participating in floorball and spinning

    The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of motivation associated with participation in floorball (indoor hockey) and spinning, and how levels of motivation predicted continuation. A sample of 66 middleaged women participated in a 12-week intervention of either floorball or spinning. They filled out the Sport Motivation Scale in week 2 and week 11 of the intervention, and data on their continuation six and 12 months after the intervention was also collected. A repeated measures MANOVA showed that participants in the floorball group had higher levels of intrinsic and self-determined extrinsic motivation for the activity during the intervention period, suggesting that floorball is a more motivating activity. In addition, extrinsic motivation the introjected regulation increased in both groups during the intervention period. Intrinsic motivation, as well as extrinsic motivation introjected regulation, predicted participants’ continuation six and 12 months after the intervention, suggesting that motivation as viewed in a Self-Determination Theory perspective is important for continuation

    Bigraphical Refinement

    We propose a mechanism for the vertical refinement of bigraphical reactive systems, based upon a mechanism for limiting observations and utilising the underlying categorical structure of bigraphs. We present a motivating example to demonstrate that the proposed notion of refinement is sensible with respect to the theory of bigraphical reactive systems; and we propose a sufficient condition for guaranteeing the existence of a safety-preserving vertical refinement. We postulate the existence of a complimentary notion of horizontal refinement for bigraphical agents, and finally we discuss the connection of this work to the general refinement of Reeves and Streader.Comment: In Proceedings Refine 2011, arXiv:1106.348

    Potential role of endocrine gastrin in the colonic adenoma carcinoma sequence

    The role of hyper-gastrinaemia in the incidence of colonic cancer remains to be clarified. The aim of this study was to determine whether cholecystokinin-2 (CCK-2) receptor expression predicts the sensitivity of human colonic adenomas to the proliferative effects of serum hyper-gastrinaemia. Gene expression of the classical (74 kDa) CCK-2 receptor in human colonic adenoma specimens and cell lines, was quantified by real-time PCR. Western blotting, using a CCK-2 receptor antiserum, confirmed protein expression. A transformed human colonic adenoma was grown in SCID mice, with hyper-gastrinaemia induced by protein pump inhibitors. CCK-2 receptor blockade was achieved by using neutralising antiserum. Both human colonic adenoma cell lines and biopsies expressed CCK-2 receptor mRNA at levels comparable with CCK-2 receptor transfected fibroblasts and oxyntic mucosa. Western blotting confirmed immunoreactive CCK-2 receptor bands localised to 45, 74 and 82.5 kDa. Omeprazole and lansoprazole-induced hyper-gastrinaemia (resulting in serum gastrin levels of 34.0 and 153.0 pM, respectively) significantly increased the weight of the human adenoma grafts (43% (P=0.016) and 70% (P=0.014), respectively). The effect of hypergastrinaemia on tumour growth was reversed by use of antiserum directed against the CCK-2 receptor. Hyper-gastrinaemia may promote proliferation of human colonic adenomas that express CCK-2 receptor isoforms

    Setting a baseline for global urban virome surveillance in sewage

    The rapid development of megacities, and their growing connectedness across the world is becoming a distinct driver for emerging disease outbreaks. Early detection of unusual disease emergence and spread should therefore include such cities as part of risk-based surveillance. A catch-all metagenomic sequencing approach of urban sewage could potentially provide an unbiased insight into the dynamics of viral pathogens circulating in a community irrespective of access to care, a potential which already has been proven for the surveillance of poliovirus. Here, we present a detailed characterization of sewage viromes from a snapshot of 81 high density urban areas across the globe, including in-depth assessment of potential biases, as a proof of concept for catch-all viral pathogen surveillance. We show the ability to detect a wide range of viruses and geographical and seasonal differences for specific viral groups. Our findings offer a cross-sectional baseline for further research in viral surveillance from urban sewage samples and place previous studies in a global perspective
