Nonperturbative Description of Deep Inelastic Structure Functions in Light-Front QCD
We explore the deep inelastic structure functions of hadrons
nonperturbatively in an inverse power expansion of the light-front energy of
the probe in the framework of light-front QCD. We arrive at the general
expressions for various structure functions as the Fourier transform of matrix
elements of different components of bilocal vector and axial vector currents on
the light-front in a straightforward manner. The complexities of the structure
functions are mainly carried by the multi-parton wave functions of the hadrons,
while, the bilocal currents have a dynamically dependent yet simple structure
on the light-front in this description. We also present a novel analysis of the
power corrections based on light-front power counting which resolves some
ambiguities of the conventional twist analysis in deep inelastic processes.
Further, the factorization theorem and the scale evolution of the structure
functions are presented in this formalism by using old-fashioned light-front
time-ordered perturbation theory with multi-parton wave functions.
Nonperturbative QCD dynamics underlying the structure functions can be explored
in the same framework. Once the nonperturbative multi-parton wave functions are
known from low-energy light-front QCD, a complete description of deep inelastic
structure functions can be realized.Comment: Revtex, 30 pages and no figur

Strange form factors of the proton: a new analysis of the neutrino (antineutrino) data of the BNL-734 experiment
We consider ratios of elastic neutrino(antineutrino)-proton cross sections
measured by the Brookhaven BNL-734 experiment and use them to obtain the
neutral current (NC) over charged current (CC) neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry.
We discuss the sensitivity of these ratios and of the asymmetry to the
electric, magnetic and axial strange form factors of the nucleon and to the
axial cutoff mass M_A. We show that the effects of the nuclear structure and
interactions on the asymmetry and, in general, on ratios of cross sections are
negligible. We find some restrictions on the possible values of the parameters
characterizing the strange form factors. We show that a precise measurement of
the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry would allow the extraction of the axial and
vector magnetic strange form factors in a model independent way. The
neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry turns out to be almost independent on the
electric strange form factor and on the axial cutoff mass.Comment: 12 page
Effects of low testosterone levels and of adrenal androgens on growth of prostate tumor models in nude mice
Abstract
Two transplantable, androgen dependent prostate tumor models of human origin, PC-82 and PC-EW, were used to study the effect of low androgen levels and adrenal androgens on prostate tumor cell proliferation. Tumor load of the PC-82 and PC-EW tumors could be maintained constant when plasma testosterone levels were 0.8 and 0.9 nmol/l, respectively, corresponding with an intratissue 5α-dihydrotestosterone level of 3–4 pmol/g tissue. This critical androgen level for prostate tumor growth stimulation amounted to 2–3 times the castration level and proved to be similar for both tumor models. Relatively high levels of androstenedione resulted in physiological levels of plasma testosterone causing androgen concentrations in PC-82 tumor tissue exceeding the critical level for tumor growth. These results indicate that submaximal suppression of androgens can stop tumor growth in these prostate tumor models
Weisskopf-Wigner Decay Theory for the Energy-Driven Stochastic Schr\"odinger Equation
We generalize the Weisskopf-Wigner theory for the line shape and transition
rates of decaying states to the case of the energy-driven stochastic
Schr\"odinger equation that has been used as a phenomenology for state vector
reduction. Within the standard approximations used in the Weisskopf-Wigner
analysis, and assuming that the perturbing potential inducing the decay has
vanishing matrix elements within the degenerate manifold containing the
decaying state, the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation linearizes. Solving the
linearized equations, we find no change from the standard analysis in the line
shape or the transition rate per unit time. The only effect of the stochastic
terms is to alter the early time transient behavior of the decay, in a way that
eliminates the quantum Zeno effect. We apply our results to estimate
experimental bounds on the parameter governing the stochastic effects.Comment: 29 pages in RevTeX, Added Note, references adde
Dark energy as a mirage
Motivated by the observed cosmic matter distribution, we present the
following conjecture: due to the formation of voids and opaque structures, the
average matter density on the path of the light from the well-observed objects
changes from Omega_M ~ 1 in the homogeneous early universe to Omega_M ~ 0 in
the clumpy late universe, so that the average expansion rate increases along
our line of sight from EdS expansion Ht ~ 2/3 at high redshifts to free
expansion Ht ~ 1 at low redshifts. To calculate the modified observable
distance-redshift relations, we introduce a generalized Dyer-Roeder method that
allows for two crucial physical properties of the universe: inhomogeneities in
the expansion rate and the growth of the nonlinear structures. By treating the
transition redshift to the void-dominated era as a free parameter, we find a
phenomenological fit to the observations from the CMB anisotropy, the position
of the baryon oscillation peak, the magnitude-redshift relations of type Ia
supernovae, the local Hubble flow and the nucleosynthesis, resulting in a
concordant model of the universe with 90% dark matter, 10% baryons, no dark
energy, 15 Gyr as the age of the universe and a natural value for the
transition redshift z_0=0.35. Unlike a large local void, the model respects the
cosmological principle, further offering an explanation for the late onset of
the perceived acceleration as a consequence of the forming nonlinear
structures. Additional tests, such as quantitative predictions for angular
deviations due to an anisotropic void distribution and a theoretical derivation
of the model, can vindicate or falsify the interpretation that light
propagation in voids is responsible for the perceived acceleration.Comment: 33 pages, 2 figs; v2: minor clarifications, results unchanged; v3:

The ratio of p and n yields in NC neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus scattering and strange form factors of the nucleon
We calculate the ratio of proton and neutron yields in NC induced
neutrino(antineutrino)-nucleus inelastic scattering at neutrino energies of
about 1 GeV. We show that this ratio depends very weakly on the nuclear models
employed and that in the neutrino and antineutrino cases the ratios have
different sensitivity to the axial and vector strange form factors; moreover,
the ratio of antineutrino--nucleus cross sections turns out to be rather
sensitive to the electric strange form factor. We demonstrate that measurements
of these ratios will allow to get information on the strange form factors of
the nucleon in the region Q > 0.4 GeV^2.Comment: 8 pages, including 2 figures. Final version to be published in Phys.

Virtual Effects of Split SUSY in Higgs Productions at Linear Colliders
In split supersymmetry the gauginos and higgsinos are the only supersymmetric
particles possibly accessible at foreseeable colliders like the CERN Large
Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International Linear Collider (ILC). In order to
account for the cosmic dark matter measured by WMAP, these gauginos and
higgsinos are stringently constrained and could be explored at the colliders
through their direct productions and/or virtual effects in some processes. The
clean environment and high luminosity of the ILC render the virtual effects of
percent level meaningful in unraveling the new physics effects. In this work we
assume split supersymmetry and calculate the virtual effects of the
WMAP-allowed gauginos and higgsinos in Higgs productions e+e- -> Z h and e+e-
-> \nu_e \bar_\nu_e h through WW fusion at the ILC. We find that the production
cross section of e+e- -> Zh can be altered by a few percent in some part of the
WMAP-allowed parameter space, while the correction to the WW-fusion process
e+e- -> \nu_e \bar_\nu_e h is below 1%. Such virtual effects are correlated
with the cross sections of chargino pair productions and can offer
complementary information in probing split supersymmetry at the colliders.Comment: more discussions added (7 pages, 10 figs
Lorentz breaking Effective Field Theory and observational tests
Analogue models of gravity have provided an experimentally realizable test
field for our ideas on quantum field theory in curved spacetimes but they have
also inspired the investigation of possible departures from exact Lorentz
invariance at microscopic scales. In this role they have joined, and sometime
anticipated, several quantum gravity models characterized by Lorentz breaking
phenomenology. A crucial difference between these speculations and other ones
associated to quantum gravity scenarios, is the possibility to carry out
observational and experimental tests which have nowadays led to a broad range
of constraints on departures from Lorentz invariance. We shall review here the
effective field theory approach to Lorentz breaking in the matter sector,
present the constraints provided by the available observations and finally
discuss the implications of the persisting uncertainty on the composition of
the ultra high energy cosmic rays for the constraints on the higher order,
analogue gravity inspired, Lorentz violations.Comment: 47 pages, 4 figures. Lecture Notes for the IX SIGRAV School on
