Flow of nitrogen-pressurized Halon 1301 in fire extinguishing systems
Halon 1301 which is a halocarbon fire extinguishing agent (CBrF3) used by the U.S. Army for vehicle fire suppression is discussed. Halon 1301 is discharged under nitrogen pressure, and the Halon-nitrogen mixture is a two phase, two component mixture that obeys compressible fluid laws and exhibits choking effects. A computer model was developed to analyze the discharge of Halon and nitrogen from a storage bottle through pipes and nozzles. The model agrees well with data from Halon 1301 discharge tests. The discharge time depends mainly on nozzle area and pipe volume, for given initial conditions. Graphs were developed for estimating discharge times. A nozzle employing multiple concentric converging/diverging nozzles was developed which gave hemispherical coverage
The complement: a solution to liquid drop finite size effects in phase transitions
The effects of the finite size of a liquid drop undergoing a phase transition
are described in terms of the complement, the largest (but still mesoscopic)
drop representing the liquid in equilibrium with the vapor. Vapor cluster
concentrations, pressure and density from fixed mean density lattice gas
(Ising) model calculations are explained in terms of the complement. Accounting
for this finite size effect is key to determining the infinite nuclear matter
phase diagram from experimental data.Comment: Four two column pages, four figures, two tables; accepted for

Electrical properties of a-antimony selenide
This paper reports conduction mechanism in a-\sbse over a wide range of
temperature (238K to 338K) and frequency (5Hz to 100kHz). The d.c. conductivity
measured as a function of temperature shows semiconducting behaviour with
activation energy E= 0.42 eV. Thermally induced changes in the
electrical and dielectric properties of a-\sbse have been examined. The a.c.
conductivity in the material has been explained using modified CBH model. The
band conduction and single polaron hopping is dominant above room temperature.
However, in the lower temperature range the bipolaron hopping dominates.Comment: 9 pages (RevTeX, LaTeX2e), 9 psfigures, also at

Generator Coordinate Truncations
We investigate the accuracy of several schemes to calculate ground-state
correlation energies using the generator coordinate technique. Our test-bed for
the study is the interacting boson model, equivalent to a 6-level
Lipkin-type model. We find that the simplified projection of a triaxial
generator coordinate state using the subgroup of the rotation group is
not very accurate in the parameter space of the Hamiltonian of interest. On the
other hand, a full rotational projection of an axial generator coordinate state
gives remarkable accuracy. We also discuss the validity of the simplified
treatment using the extended Gaussian overlap approximation (top-GOA), and show
that it works reasonably well when the number of boson is four or larger.Comment: 19 pages, 6 eps figure
Spin gaps and spin-flip energies in density-functional theory
Energy gaps are crucial aspects of the electronic structure of finite and
extended systems. Whereas much is known about how to define and calculate
charge gaps in density-functional theory (DFT), and about the relation between
these gaps and derivative discontinuities of the exchange-correlation
functional, much less is know about spin gaps. In this paper we give
density-functional definitions of spin-conserving gaps, spin-flip gaps and the
spin stiffness in terms of many-body energies and in terms of single-particle
(Kohn-Sham) energies. Our definitions are as analogous as possible to those
commonly made in the charge case, but important differences between spin and
charge gaps emerge already on the single-particle level because unlike the
fundamental charge gap spin gaps involve excited-state energies. Kohn-Sham and
many-body spin gaps are predicted to differ, and the difference is related to
derivative discontinuities that are similar to, but distinct from, those
usually considered in the case of charge gaps. Both ensemble DFT and
time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) can be used to calculate these spin discontinuities
from a suitable functional. We illustrate our findings by evaluating our
definitions for the Lithium atom, for which we calculate spin gaps and spin
discontinuities by making use of near-exact Kohn-Sham eigenvalues and,
independently, from the single-pole approximation to TDDFT. The many-body
corrections to the Kohn-Sham spin gaps are found to be negative, i.e., single
particle calculations tend to overestimate spin gaps while they underestimate
charge gaps.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 3 table
Spatial and seasonal relationships between Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) and their prey, at multiple scales
Knowing where pinnipeds forage is vital to managing and protecting their populations, and for assessing potential interactions with fisheries. We assessed the spatial
relationship between the seasonal distribution of Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) outfitted with satellite transmitters and the seasonal distributions of potential harbor seal prey species in San Francisco Bay, California. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were calculated between the number of harbor seal locations in an area of the San Francisco Bay and the abundance of
specific prey species in the same area. The influence of scale on the analyses was assessed by varying the scale
of analysis from 1 to 10 km. There was consistency in the prey species targeted by harbor seals year-round, although there were seasonal differences between the most important
prey species. The highest correlations between harbor seals and their prey were found for seasonally abundant benthic species, located within about 10 km of the primary haul-out site. Probable foraging habitat for harbor seals was identified, based on areas with high abundances of prey species that were strongly correlated with harbor seal distribution. With comparable local data inputs, this
approach has potential application to pinniped management in other areas, and to decisions about the location of
marine reserves designed to protect these species
