    Innovative Use Of Technique In Benjamin Britten's Cello Works: The Inspiration Of Mstislav Rostropovich

    Benjamin Britten was one of the most prolific and well-known English composers of the mid-twentieth century. During his life, he was widely recognized for his unique creative spirit, which, through his music, enriched people throughout the world. Britten was constantly looking for new possibilities for unique sounds and highly contrasted moods and rhythms. Thus, even today, his music remains riveting. Britten introduced challenging cello techniques in his compositions inspired by Mstislav Rostropovich. Rostropovich's natural physical attributes including his large hands, long fingers, and especially his great strength and stamina all contributed to his astounding ability on the cello. Study of previous composers' works for Rostropovich, combined with Britten's first-hand understanding of the cellist's amazing capabilities, assisted Britten in writing his stunning cello compositions. After careful study of all of Britten's cello works, I have categorized six important techniques: multiple stops, drone, unique use of pizzicato, harmonics, separation of voices, and moto perpetuo. Each of the six categories will be identified and examined in this dissertation within the context of the compositions in which they appear. I have chosen the performance option for this dissertation. In support of my dissertation, two recitals were presented in two public recitals in Gildenhorn Recital Hall of University of Maryland on September 14, 2002, and March 8, 2003. For the purpose of contrast in style and sound, Suite No. 1 for Cello in G Major, Op. 72 and the Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 65 comprised the first recital. The second recital included Suite No. 3 for Cello in C Major, Op. 87 along with the Symphony for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 68. This dissertation is divided into four chapters. A brief history of Britten's life is included in the first chapter. His compositions written prior to the cello works inspired by Rostropovich are the focus of the second chapter. The third chapter features a discussion of Rostropovich's influence on Britten. Chapter Four is an in-depth examination of the characteristic techniques found in Britten's intriguing compositions for cello

    Habitual Combined Exercise Protects against Age-Associated Decline in Vascular Function and Lipid Profiles in Elderly Postmenopausal Women

    Postmenopausal status is associated with increased risks for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This study investigated differences in vascular function, lipids, body composition, and physical fitness in elderly postmenopausal women active in combined resistance and aerobic exercise (CRAE) training for 1 year versus a sedentary cohort of similar-in-age counterparts. Elderly postmenopausal women performing habitual CRAE training for 1 year (age ~75 year; CRAE, n = 57) and elderly sedentary postmenopausal women (age ~78 year; SED, n = 44) were recruited. Arterial stiffness (brachial-to-ankle pulse-wave velocity, baPWV), blood pressure, blood lipids, anthropometrics, 2-min walking distance, and muscular strength were assessed for both groups. There were significant differences for baPWV, systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein, and body fat percentage, which were significantly lower (p \u3c 0.05) in CRAE vs. SED, and both 2 min walking distance and muscular strength were significantly greater (p \u3c 0.05) in CRAE vs. SED. These results indicate that elderly postmenopausal women participating in habitual CRAE training may have better protection against risks for CVD and have better physical fitness compared to SED counterparts

    Galaxy based BLAST submission to distributed national high throughput computing resources

    To assist the bioinformatic community in leveraging the national cyberinfrastructure, the National Center for Genomic Analysis Support (NCGAS) along with Indiana University's High Throughput Computing (HTC) group have engineered a method to use the Galaxy to submit BLAST jobs to the Open Science Grid (OSG). OSG is a collaboration of resource providers that utilize opportunistic cycles at more than 100 universities and research centers in the US. BLAST jobs make a significant portion of the research conducted on NCGAS resources, moving jobs that are conducive to an HTC environment to the national cyberinfrastructure would alleviate load on resources at NCGAS and provide a cost effective solution for getting more cycles to reduce the unmet needs of bioinformatic researchers. To this point researchers have tackled this issue by purchasing additional resources or enlisting collaborators doing the same type of research, while HTC experts have focused on expanding the number of resources available to historically HTC friendly science workflows. In this paper, we bring together expertise from both areas to address how a bioinformatics researcher using their normal interface, Galaxy, can seamlessly access the OSG which routinely supplies researchers with millions of compute hours daily. Efficient use of these results will supply additional compute time to researcher and help provide a yet unmet need for BLAST computing cycles.This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. ABI-1062432, Craig Stewart, PI.     Casein Kinase 1 Delta (CK1δ) Regulates Period Length of the Mouse Suprachiasmatic Circadian Clock In Vitro

    BACKGROUND: Casein kinase 1 delta (CK1delta) plays a more prominent role in the regulation of circadian cycle length than its homologue casein kinase 1 epsilon (CK1epsilon) in peripheral tissues such as liver and embryonic fibroblasts. Mice lacking CK1delta die shortly after birth, so it has not been possible to assess the impact of loss of CK1delta on behavioral rhythms controlled by the master circadian oscillator in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present study, mPER2::LUCIFERASE bioluminescence rhythms were monitored from SCN explants collected from neonatal mice. The data demonstrate that SCN explants from neonatal CK1delta-deficient mice oscillate, but with a longer circadian period than littermate controls. The cycle length of rhythms recorded from neonatal SCN explants of CK1epsilon-deficient mice did not differ from control explants. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The results indicate that CK1delta plays a more prominent role than CK1epsilon in the maintenance of 24-hour rhythms in the master circadian oscillator
