    Advertising personal computers in the 1980s

Looking to a specific kind of computer at a specific moment in history, I analyze the ways in which advertising played a role in socially constructing an individual's relationship to the personal computer in the home. Based an analysis of over 500 advertisements in widely circulated magazines during 1984-1987, this thesis examines through emblematic examples how advertisements during this period positioned the personal computer as a domestic machine. In observing the means of socially constructing the personal computer in the mid -1980s, we come to understand the role and potential implications of advertising in socially constructing meaning, as well as gain a deep perspective on how the personal computer was constituted in the early years of its introduction into the home. Taken together, these advertisements present a portrait of a technology's evolution and begin to reveal how personal computers took on the meaning and place that they now occupy in contemporary life. Once embodiments of military and corporate de-humanizing control, computers are now accepted as evocative, social extensions of individual selves that represent individual freedom and power.     Repairing Innovation: A Study of Integrating AI in Clinical Care

    Over the past two years, a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians and technologists associated with Duke University and Duke Health system have developed and implemented Sepsis Watch, a sociotechnical system combining an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning model with new hospital protocols to raise the quality of sepsis treatment. Sepsis is a widespread and deadly condition that can develop from any infection and is one of the most common causes of death in hospitals. And while sepsis is treatable, it is notoriously difficult to diagnose consistently. This makes sepsis a prime candidate for AI-based interventions, where new approaches to patient data might raise levels of detection, treatment, and, ultimately, patient outcomes in the form of fewer deaths.As an application of AI, the deep learning model tends to eclipse the other parts of the system; in practice, Sepsis Watch is constituted by a complex combination of human labor and expertise, as well as technical and institutional infrastructures. This report brings into focus the critical role of human labor and organizational context in developing an effective clinical intervention by framing Sepsis Watch as a complex sociotechnical system, not just a machine learning model

    Power to the People? Opportunities and Challenges for Participatory AI

    Participatory approaches to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are gaining momentum: the increased attention comes partly with the view that participation opens the gateway to an inclusive, equitable, robust, responsible and trustworthy AI.Among other benefits, participatory approaches are essential to understanding and adequately representing the needs, desires and perspectives of historically marginalized communities. However, there currently exists lack of clarity on what meaningful participation entails and what it is expected to do. In this paper we first review participatory approaches as situated in historical contexts as well as participatory methods and practices within the AI and ML pipeline. We then introduce three case studies in participatory AI.Participation holds the potential for beneficial, emancipatory and empowering technology design, development and deployment while also being at risk for concerns such as cooptation and conflation with other activities. We lay out these limitations and concerns and argue that as participatory AI/ML becomes in vogue, a contextual and nuanced understanding of the term as well as consideration of who the primary beneficiaries of participatory activities ought to be constitute crucial factors to realizing the benefits and opportunities that participation brings.Comment: To appear in the proceeding of EAAMO 202

    Moral Crumple Zones: Cautionary Tales in Human-Robot Interaction

    As debates about the policy and ethical implications of AI systems grow, it will be increasingly important to accurately locate who is responsible when agency is distributed in a system and control over an action is mediated through time and space. Analyzing several high-profile accidents involving complex and automated socio-technical systems and the media coverage that surrounded them, I introduce the concept of a moral crumple zone to describe how responsibility for an action may be misattributed to a human actor who had limited control over the behavior of an automated or autonomous system. Just as the crumple zone in a car is designed to absorb the force of impact in a crash, the human in a highly complex and automated system may become simply a component—accidentally or intentionally—that bears the brunt of the moral and legal responsibilities when the overall system malfunctions. While the crumple zone in a car is meant to protect the human driver, the moral crumple zone protects the integrity of the technological system, at the expense of the nearest human operator. The concept is both a challenge to and an opportunity for the design and regulation of human-robot systems. At stake in articulating moral crumple zones is not only the misattribution of responsibility but also the ways in which new forms of consumer and worker harm may develop in new complex, automated, or purported autonomous technologies
