    The transition to a low carbon energy system : insights on the role of the oil and gas sector

    2017 has been significant year for energy activity in Scotland, both on a policy and technological front. Since the start of the year, the Scottish Government has launched its draft Scottish Energy Strategy (Scottish Government, 2017a) and draft Climate Change Plan (Scottish Government, 2017b) underpinning policy actions to address climate and emissions into the early 2030s. Additionally, new energy developments have kept on coming. On the electricity side, the latest data show that renewable electricity generation was 26% higher in the second quarter of 2017 than the same period in 2016. Total renewable electricity capacity rose by 16% over the same period. There were also major "firsts", including Hywind Scotland - the world's first floating offshore wind farm – beginning operation from October 2017 (Statoil, 2017) and the first ever coal-free working day for Great Britain’s electricity generation mix in April (Financial Times, 2017)

    The regulation of corticofugal fiber targeting by retinal inputs

    Corticothalamic projection systems arise from 2 main cortical layers. Layer V neurons project exclusively to higher-order thalamic nuclei, while layer VIa fibers project to both first-order and higher-order thalamic nuclei. During early postnatal development, layer VIa and VIb fibers accumulate at the borders of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) before they innervate it. After neonatal monocular enucleation or silencing of the early retinal activity, there is premature entry of layer VIa and VIb fibers into the dLGN contralateral to the manipulation. Layer V fibers do not innervate the superficial gray layer of the superior colliculus during the first postnatal week, but also demonstrate premature entry to the contralateral superficial gray layer following neonatal enucleation. Normally, layer V driver projections to the thalamus only innervate higher-order nuclei. Our results demonstrate that removal of retinal input from the dLGN induces cortical layer V projections to aberrantly enter, arborize, and synapse within the first-order dLGN. These results suggest that there is cross-hierarchical corticothalamic plasticity after monocular enucleation. Cross-hierarchical rewiring has been previously demonstrated in the thalamocortical system (Pouchelon et al. 2014), and now we provide evidence for cross-hierarchical corticothalamic rewiring after loss of the peripheral sensory input

    Light Yield of Perovskite Nanocrystal-Doped Liquid Scintillator

    Future generations of liquid scintillator neutrino experiments will require stably loading tons of candidate isotopes into kiloton-scale detectors, representing a significant chemical challenge. Nanoparticles containing the candidate isotopes provide a promising method for this loading. Additionally, the unique optical properties of nanoparticles can enhance detection and background discrimination. Perovskite nanocrystals are particularly attractive due to the reliability of their crystal structure and their easily-scalable synthesis.     Differential female sociality is linked with the fine-scale structure of sexual interactions in replicate groups of red junglefowl, Gallus gallus

    Recent work indicates that social structure has extensive implications for patterns of sexual selection and sexual conflict. However, little is known about the individual variation in social behaviours linking social structure to sexual interactions. Here, we use network analysis of replicate polygynandrous groups of red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) to show that the association between social structure and sexual interactions is underpinned by differential female sociality. Sexual dynamics are largely explained by a core group of highly social, younger females, which are more fecund and more polyandrous, and thus associated with more intense postcopulatory competition for males. By contrast, less fecund females from older cohorts, which tend to be socially dominant, avoid male sexual attention by clustering together and perching on branches, and preferentially reproduce with dominant males by more exclusively associating and mating with them. Collectively, these results indicate that individual females occupy subtly different social niches and demonstrate that female sociality can be an important factor underpinning the landscape of intrasexual competition and the emergent structure of animal societies

    A realist review of health passports for Autistic adults

    Background: Autism is a normal part of cognitive diversity, resulting in communication and sensory processing differences, which can become disabling in a neurotypical world. Autistic people have an increased likelihood of physical and mental co-occurring conditions and die earlier than neurotypical peers. Inaccessible healthcare may contribute to this. Autism Health Passports (AHPs) are paper-based or digital tools which can be used to describe healthcare accessibility needs; they are recommended in UK clinical guidance. However, questions remained as to the theoretical underpinnings and effectiveness of AHPs. Methods: We undertook a systematic literature search identifying studies focused on AHPs for adults (aged over 16 years) from five databases. Included literature was subjected to realist evaluation. Data were extracted using a standardised form, developed by the research team, which considered research design, study quality for realist review and the Context, Mechanisms and Outcomes (CMOs) associated with each AHP tool. Findings: 162 unique records were identified, and 13 items were included in the review. Only one item was considered high quality. Contextual factors focused on the inaccessibility of healthcare to Autistic patients and staff lack of confidence and training in supporting Autistic needs. Interventions were heterogeneous, with most sources reporting few details as to how they had been developed. The most frequently included contents were communication preferences. Mechanisms were often not stated or were inferred by the reviewers and lacked specificity. Outcomes were included in four studies and were primarily focused on AHP uptake, rather than Outcomes which measured impact. Conclusion: There is insufficient evidence to conclude that AHPs reduce the health inequalities experienced by Autistic people. Using an AHP tool alone in a healthcare Context that does not meet Autistic needs, without the inclusion of the local Autistic community developing the tool, and a wider intervention to reduce known barriers to health inequality, may mean that AHPs do not trigger any Mechanisms, and thus cannot affect Outcomes

    Challenges of building medical image datasets for development of deep learning software in stroke

    Despite the large amount of brain CT data generated in clinical practice, the availability of CT datasets for deep learning (DL) research is currently limited. Furthermore, the data can be insufficiently or improperly prepared for machine learning and thus lead to spurious and irreproducible analyses. This lack of access to comprehensive and diverse datasets poses a significant challenge for the development of DL algorithms. In this work, we propose a complete semi-automatic pipeline to address the challenges of preparing a clinical brain CT dataset for DL analysis and describe the process of standardising this heterogeneous dataset. Challenges include handling image sets with different orientations (axial, sagittal, coronal), different image types (to view soft tissues or bones) and dimensions, and removing redundant background. The final pipeline was able to process 5,868/10,659 (45%) CT image datasets. Reasons for rejection include non-axial data (n=1,920), bone reformats (n=687), separated skull base/vault images (n=1,226), and registration failures (n=465). Further format adjustments, including image cropping, resizing and scaling are also needed for DL processing. Of the axial scans that were not localisers, bone reformats or split brains, 5,868/6,333 (93%) were accepted, while the remaining 465 failed the registration process. Appropriate preparation of medical imaging datasets for DL is a costly and time-intensive process.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
