    The artist as a nomad

    This paper sketches a portrait of the artist as a nomad. Through an introspective moment of reflection, the author shows that being a nomadic writer is being able to understand that "home" itself is an imaginary concept that can therefore be constantly redefined and re-imagined. As an artist, he refuses to be framed within preconceived aesthetic paradigms that are often defined the West. Rather, the paper argues that to be an artist or a writer, one should first learn how to unlearn one's knowledge and to become a creative writer, one should learn how to write with an eraser, and not with a pen. In order to imagine or even re-imagine, one should first be able to de-imagine the institutionalized knowledge and recover that childlike curiosity and freshness of ignorance one has left behind

    The history of walls in Morocco is extremely rich. Walls have played a powerful role throughout history, recounting stories of protection, resistance and encounter. They stand as historical palimpsests bearing traces of former times. However, in our modern times, walls have now embraced new functions. They have become spaces for creative communication and artistic performance. As a survivor of the Arab Spring revolutions that swept the MENA region by the end of 2010, Morocco has adapted to the transformations that have altered the political landscape in the region by answering the national demands and needs. It has elaborated strategies that aim to ease the masses’ frustrations and answer their aspirations by offering them larger platforms to express themselves and more liveable and breathable public spaces to occupy. Morocco has been creatively upgrading its cities where mural art is celebrated, thus competing with the world’s most famous metropolises. This article explores the evolution of mural art in Morocco with an emphasis on the cultural wall heritage of the country

    Social Media Filtered Images as Carnivalesque Resistance

    A great many may perceive social media filters or lenses as ridiculous and filtering selfies as an act of sheer vanity or blind imitation of glamorous social media influencers. However, from within this pervasive contemporary digital phenomenon, resistance to dominant representations or subversion of societal expectations can be discerned. In other words, filters and filtered self-images are by no means simply and exclusively reproductions of socially idealized beauty standards and pre-existing cultural norms. Some filtered representations often disrupt the effect of the bandwagon from within, using the very digital resources provided by social media and filter applications. In this article, we approach this rather unexplored kind of filtered images from Mikhail Bakhtin’s perspective, precisely employing his conception of the carnivalesque. Using this framework, the aim is to explore the potential subversiveness of certain playful social media filtered representations. Some social media filtered images while satiric and playful also constitute powerful statements with regards to identity politics and the current status quo
