OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the size and function of the kidney in high-risk premature small gestational age (PT/SGA) newborns. Furthermore, estimation of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was done by comparing Cystatin C-based method with the creatinine –based method in those preterm newborns. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included 20 PT/SGA and controls (20 preterm appropriate for gestational age [PT/AGA] and 20 full-term [FT] newborns). Serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and cystatin C were determined on days 3 and 7 of the study for all newborn infants. GFR was assessed by cystatin C-based method and creatinine-based method. Evaluation of the renal size by ultrasound was done on day 7 of neonatal life. RESULTS: A significant difference was found in the length and transverse diameter of both kidneys, comparing PT/SGA group with PT/AGA and FT group. Cystatin C on day 3 of PT/SGA group had a significant difference than PT/AGA and FT group. Estimation of GFR (eGFR) calculated by filler Zappitelli, Grubb, Larsson, and Dorum formulae of PT/SGA group had a significant difference comparing with PT/AGA and FT group on days 3 and 7. CONCLUSION: PT/SGA newborns have reduced renal size and immature renal function. Cystatin C is a marker for renal function superior to creatinine as it is not affected by body mass index, gestational age, and birth weight. Cystatin C-based eGFR is more accurate and more sensitive to minor changes in GFR than creatinine-based equation

Ruminant Brucellosis in the Kafr El Sheikh Governorate of the Nile Delta, Egypt: Prevalence of a Neglected Zoonosis

Brucellosis is a zoonosis of mammals caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. It is responsible for a vast global burden imposed on human health through disability and on animal productivity. In humans brucellosis causes a range of flu-like symptoms and chronic debilitating illness. In livestock brucellosis causes economic losses as a result of abortion, infertility and decreased milk production. The main routes for human infection are consumption of contaminated dairy products and contact with infected ruminants. The control of brucellosis in humans depends on its control in ruminants, for which accurate estimates of the frequency of infection are very useful, especially in areas with no previous frequency estimates. We studied the seroprevalence of brucellosis and its geographic distribution among domestic ruminants in one governorate of the Nile Delta region, Egypt. In the study area, the seroprevalence of ruminant brucellosis is very high and has probably increased considerably since the early 1990s. The disease is widespread but more concentrated around major animal markets. These findings question the efficacy of the control strategy in place and highlight the high infection risk for the animal and human populations of the area and the urgent need for an improved control strategy

Measurement of Electron Density from Stark-Broadened Spectral Lines Appearing in Silver Nanomaterial Plasma

This work communicates results from optical emission spectroscopy following laser-induced optical breakdown at or near nanomaterial. Selected atomic lines of silver are evaluated for a consistent determination of electron density. Comparisons are presented with Balmer series hydrogen results. Measurements free of self-absorption effects are of particular interest. For several silver lines, asymmetries are observed in the recorded line profiles. Electron densities of interest range from 0.5 to 3 × 1017 cm−3 for five nanosecond Q-switched Nd:YAG radiation at wavelengths of 1064 nm, 532 nm, and 355 nm and for selected silver emission lines including 328.06 nm, 338.28 nm, 768.7 nm, and 827.3 nm and the hydrogen alpha Balmer series line at 656.3 nm. Line asymmetries are presented for the 328.06-nm and 338.28-nm Ag I lines that are measured following generation of the plasma due to multiple photon absorption. This work explores electron density variations for different irradiance levels and reports spectral line asymmetry of resonance lines for different laser fluence levels

Opacity Corrections for Resonance Silver Lines in Nano-Material Laser-Induced Plasma

Q-switched laser radiation at wavelengths of 355, 532, and 1064 nm from a Nd: YAG laser was used to generate plasma in laboratory air at the target surface made of nano-silver particles of size 95 ± 10 nm. The emitted resonance spectra from the neutral silver at wavelengths of 327.9 nm and 338.2 nm indicate existence of self-reversal in addition to plasma self-absorption. Both lines were identified in emission spectra at different laser irradiation wavelengths with characteristic dips at the un-shifted central wavelengths. These dips are usually associated with self-reversal. Under similar conditions, plasmas at the corresponding bulk silver target were generated. The recorded emission spectra were compared to those obtained from the nano-material target. The comparisons confirm existence of self-reversal of resonance lines that emerge from plasmas produced at nano-material targets. This work suggests a method for recovery of the spectral line shapes and discusses practical examples. In addition, subsidiary calibration efforts that utilize the Balmer series Hα-line reveal that other Ag I lines at 827.35 nm and 768.7 nm are optically thin under variety of experimental conditions and are well-suited as reference lines for measurement of the laser plasma electron density

Thermodynamic properties of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensation in a harmonic plus quartic trap

In this paper, the thermodynamic properties of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic plus quartic potential are calculated using a modified semiclassical approximation. We determined the condensate fraction, critical temperature and heat capacity of the condensate using a method that takes into account deviations from ideal gas behavior due to the effect of finite size and the chemical potential when it is equal to the ground state energy (positive chemical potential). Predictions that can be directly compared with experiment have been found

In traumatic optic neuropathy (TON), apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells is closely related to the local production of reactive oxygen species and inflammatory mediators from activated microglial cells. Adenosine receptor A2A (A2AAR) has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties that have not been studied in TON. In the present study, we examined the role of A2AAR in retinal complications associated with TON. Initial studies in wild-type mice revealed that treatment with the A2AAR agonist resulted in marked decreases in the TON-induced microglial activation, retinal cell death and releases of reactive oxygen species and pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6. To further assess the role of A2AAR in TON, we studied the effects of A2AAR ablation on the TON-induced retinal abnormalities. A2AAR-/- mice with TON showed a significantly higher mRNA level of TNF-α, Iba1-1 in retinal tissue, and ICAM-1 expression in retinal sections compared with wild-type mice with TON. To explore a potential mechanism by which A2AAR-signaling regulates inflammation in TON, we performed additional studies using hypoxia- or LPS-treated microglial cells as an in vitro model for TON. Activation of A2AAR attenuates hypoxia or LPS-induced TNF-α release and significantly repressed the inflammatory signaling, ERK in the activated microglia. Collectively, this work provides pharmacological and genetic evidence for A2AAR signaling as a control point of cell death in TON and suggests that the retinal protective effect of A2AAR is mediated by attenuating the inflammatory response that occurs in microglia via interaction with MAPKinase pathway. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
