The School Environment in Egypt. A Situation Analysis of Public Preparatory Schools [Arabic]

Very little research exists in Egypt on contemporary education outcomes and their relationship to an array of education inputs. Also, few datasets are available on the acquisition and retention of basic skills from education. This research aims at filling that gap in our knowledge by drawing a profile of the situation of public preparatory schools, investigating the distinct dimensions of the environment in these schools, and examining the links among these dimensions and specific education outcomes. As noted in this report, this study focuses on the preparatory stage of the general education system. Students in this stage comprise one-quarter of all pre-university students in Egypt

Social Change and Parent Adolescent Dynamics in Egypt

This volume represents revised versions of a collection of papers presented at Cairo Papers Ninth Annual Symposium on \u27\u27The New Arab Family,\u27\u27 held in May 2000. Marriage, divorce, and related topics were center stage, particularly in the demographic papers. Another focus was to combine two very different approaches to the study of the family -- on the one hand demographic, and on the other broadly sociological or anthropological, or as some would say, psychodynamic, that is to say focusing on dyadic or multi-member networks of relationships within the family. Some of these papers in turn focused on \u27\u27agency,\u27\u27 the ways in which individual action fit into cultural and social frames. The research covers most of the Arab world, though with a focus on Egypt. Transitions to Adulthood: A National Survey of Adolescents in Egypt [1st edition, Arabic]

Egypt holds a unique place among developing countries due to its longstanding commitment to gather information on the numbers and well-being of its population. But until now, there has never been a systematic effort to gather data on the group of young Egyptians poised between childhood and adulthood—its adolescents. Today, Egypt has the largest cohort of adolescents in its history, more than 13 million boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19 according to its 1996 census. Their experiences during the transition to adulthood will profoundly affect how the nation makes its transition into the next century. This research report contains the early findings of a nationally representative survey of 9,000 adolescents aged 10-19 and their parents, conducted in 1997, and aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the contemporary situation of Egypt’s young people. The report attempts to achieve a fuller understanding of the major developmental “tasks” each adolescent undertakes as he or she moves toward the roles and responsibilities of adulthood, as well as household perspectives on the services and institutions available in Egypt to support those transitions
