    Probabilistic Fire Risk Framework for Optimizing Construction Site Layout

    Purpose: This paper aims to develop an efficient model able to reduce catastrophic consequences and the significant number of victims resulting from fires at construction sites. The paper proposes probabilistic modeling aimed to minimize the probability of failure of a construction site. Methodology: The developed model in this paper consists of modeling fire hazards, the vulnerability of the potential targets, and the risk within construction sites. The optimization algorithm called “differential evolution” is used in order to determine the optimal site layout, which is characterized by having the smallest overall probability of failure. A numerical simulation is performed to delineate an appropriate probability density function of the failure of the site. In addition, a geographic information system (GIS) is used to display the spatial variability of fire risk on a construction site. Findings: The paper provides an efficient model to enhance site layout planning and assign locations for supporting temporary facilities at appropriate positions within a construction site. The model is examined through applying it on a simple case study containing numerous facilities. All these facilities are considered vulnerable targets and some of them are potential fire hazards, with different intensity values. Value: Most of the previous research focuses on travel cost distance in developing site layout planning models. This paper fulfills the development of a valuable model able to generate an optimized construction site layout by minimizing the probability of failure of the whole site. It will assist the decision makers and the risk managers in identifying the riskiest zones on a construction site

    L'identification des systèmes de coordonnées des données SIG et la connaissance des algorithmes de transformation lors du passage d un système vers un autre, disponibles sur les différents logiciels SIG, sont des conditions préalables indispensables à toute manipulation de données localisées. Cependant on constate que les systèmes de référence et de coordonnées sont aujourd hui très souvent traités de façon insuffisamment complète et précise dans les logiciels SIG. L étude conduit à développer un outil interactif et éducatif, dédié aux utilisateurs SIG. Cet outil est destiné à traiter des données matricielles et vectorielles. Son interface homme-machine guide l utilisateur dans ses choix. En illustration et validation de ce travail, est abordé le cas pratique du Liban qui a été confronté aux problèmes de passage vers le nouveau système créé en utilisant le système GPS.     Exploring Urban Service Location Suitability: Mapping Social Behavior Dynamics with Space Syntax Theory

    Assessing urban service locations is a key issue within city planning, integral to promoting the well-being of citizens, and ensuring effective urban development. However, many current approaches emphasize spatial analysis focused solely on physical attributes, neglecting the equally vital social dimensions essential for enhancing inhabitants’ comfort and quality of life. When social factors are considered, they tend to operate at smaller scales. This paper addresses this gap by prioritizing integrating social factors alongside spatial analysis at the community level. By employing space syntax theory, this study investigates urban service suitability in Hajjah, a Palestinian urban community, presenting a novel approach in the literature. The research identifies good spots for essential governmental facilities like health clinics and fire stations using axial map analysis. It also suggests reallocation for some schools. Additionally, it shows ways to improve the placement of community amenities, finding ideal park locations but suboptimal mosque placements. Commercial services also exhibit areas for enhancement including gas stations and shops. The insights from this research can offer policymakers and planners insights to create more efficient, equitable, and accessible cities.     Hazards, Vulnerability and Interactions at Construction Sites: spatial risk mapping

    International audienceConstruction sites contain several supporting facilities that are required to perform construction activities. These facilities may be exposed to several hazards. This may lead to adverse consequences for the whole construction process, which in turn lead to fatal accidents that have a major impact on worker and employee productivity, project completion time, project quality and project budget. This paper proposes a framework to visualize spatial variability of a construction site's risk, generated by natural or technological hazard, through using hazard and vulnerability interaction matrices, between potential sources and potential surrounding targets. The proposed framework depends on using analytical hierarchy process (AHP), the potential global impact of facilities obtained from the interaction matrices, and the capabilities of GIS to generate results in the mapping form. The methodology is implemented in a real case project. The results show the capability of framework to visualize construction site risks due to natural or technological hazard, and also identify the most at risk position within a construction site

    Mapping the Processes of Donor-Funded Construction Projects

    Public construction projects in countries with economic difficulties are funded by donor organizations. These types of projects in low-income countries have been negatively influenced by the communication gap between the among, consultant and the construction contractor, which emerges because of unclear definitions of responsibilities and problems in exchange of information. All stakeholders face significant problems as a result of this gap. The main objective of this paper is to identify and map the processes of donor-funded construction projects to facilitate clear definition of tasks and roles, and support sustainable communication in donor-funded projects. Following a literature review, the paper provides an analysis of the current processes in donor-funded projects and presents a process map for donor funded projects which is developed based on expert interviews and five case studies. Finally, the process map is validated by a set of semi-structured interviews
