    A robot swarm assisting a human fire-fighter

    Get PDF
Emergencies in industrial warehouses are a major concern for fire-fighters. The large dimensions, together with the development of dense smoke that drastically reduces visibility, represent major challenges. The GUARDIANS robot swarm is designed to assist fire-fighters in searching a large warehouse. In this paper we discuss the technology developed for a swarm of robots assisting fire-fighters. We explain the swarming algorithms that provide the functionality by which the robots react to and follow humans while no communication is required. Next we discuss the wireless communication system, which is a so-called mobile ad-hoc network. The communication network provides also the means to locate the robots and humans. Thus, the robot swarm is able to provide guidance information to the humans. Together with the fire-fighters we explored how the robot swarm should feed information back to the human fire-fighter. We have designed and experimented with interfaces for presenting swarm-based information to human beings

A new algorithm for approaching Nash equilibrium and Kalai Smoridinsky solution

International audienceIn the present paper, a new formulation of Nash games is proposed for solving general multi-objective optimization problems. The main idea of this approach is to split the optimization variables which allow us to determine numerically the strategies between two players. The first player minimizes his cost function using the variables of the first table P, the second player, using the second table Q. The original contribution of this work concerns the construction of the two tables of allocations that lead to a Nash equilibrium on the Pareto front. On the other hand, we search P and Q that lead to a solution which is both a Nash equilibrium and a Kalai Smorodinsky solution. For this, we proposed and tried out successfully two algorithms which calculate P, Q and their associated Nash equilibrium, by using some extension of Normal Boundary Intersection approach (NBI)

0570: Association between low bone mineral density and coronary artery disease

BackgroundMany studies describe a relationship between brittle bones and cardiovascular disease. The physiopathology may be explained by the osteoprogerin (OPG) that protects the vascular wall and inhibits the RANK-RANKL system which is a strong inhibitor of osteoclasts. Thus it seems interesting to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in patients with a confirmed coronary heart disease.Material and MethodsThis study enrolled 46 patients who underwent a coronary angiography for chest pain. We identified two groups of patients:– Group 1: patients with significant coronary artery disease.– Group 2: patients with normal coronary angiography. All patients had a physical exam, a phosphocalcic investigation and bone mineral density (BMD).ResultsThe mean age of the population was 66.7±6.5 years old .52.17% were women. Among the 46 patients, 21.7% had an osteoporosis, 41.3% an osteopenia and 37% had a normal bone mineral density. 52% des 52% of the studied population had significant coronary artery disease, 48% had a normal coronary angiography. At the statistical analysis, prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia was significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 (p<0,001).ConclusionThe association between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease is a reality. However mechanisms are not well known. Thus it could be interesting to suggest a DXA to coronary patients and a large cardiovascular investigation for osteoporotic patients

Acute Myocarditis Mimicking an Acute Coronary Syndrome: Case Report and Mini-Review of the Literature

Acute myocarditis is often a challenging diagnosis due to a lack of specific clinical or paraclinical signs. It can be presented by a severe chest pain and localized ST elevation on Electrocardiogram, in rare cases, misleading the diagnosis towards acute coronary syndrome. After routine coronary angiography, a cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is imposed to correct the diagnosis towards acute myocarditis. We report the observation of a 19 year-old Moroccan male admitted to the cardiology department of IBN ROCHD University hospital of Casablanca, for acute myocarditis misdiagnosed initially as an acute myocardial infarction ST elevation and confirmed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging

Bacterial pericarditis is a rapidly progressive infection sown with heavy mortality. It usually occurs as a secondary infection to either a contiguous or hematogenous spread from a distant focus of infection. The primary involvement of the pericardium without evidence of underlying infection disease elsewhere, is sporadic. We present a unique case of a 69 -year-old patient who was diagnosed as having purulent acute bacterial pericarditis caused by Streptococcus pneumonia, revealing an underlying squamous cell lung carcinoma in the cardiology department of IBN ROCHD University hospital of Casablanca

International audienceMultidisciplinary optimisation (MDO) adresses the design process of materials and structures that must comply with several criteria, sometimes antagonistic. Moreover, different criteria may be derived from different models, coupled or not. Due to the competing nature of the criteria, rational non-arbitrary methods should be used to drive the MDO, and clearly game theory paradigm offers such a framework. In this paper, we present a case study of MDO in aeronautics, where aerodynamics designer interacts with structural designer in a Nash and Stackelberg games.

Combined Hormone and Brachy Therapies for the Treatment of Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a hormone-dependent cancer characterized by two types of cancer cells, androgen-dependent cancer cells and androgen-resistant ones. The objective of this paper is to present a novel mathematical model for the treatment of prostate cancer under combined hormone therapy and brachytherapy. Using a system of partial differential equations, we quantify and study the evolution of the different cell densities involved in prostate cancer and their responses to the two treatments. Numerical simulations of tumor growth under different therapeutic strategies are explored and presented. The numerical simulations are carried out on FreeFem++ using a 2D finite element method
