A Book Review of Generation Unbound: Drifting into Sex and Parenthood without Marriage

The book, Generation Unbound: Drifting into Sex and Parenthood without Marriage, Sawhill advocates for a new line of thought when viewing the ways to reduce poverty caused by single motherhood. Essentially, she advocates for more reliable and accessible forms of birth control. Her prescription for this reduction is for the Affordable Care Act to include more reliable and long term forms of birth control, for Medicaid coverage for family planning services, for the use of social media to educate younger generations. Her goal is to change social norms towards sexual relationships, and to increase public discussion of the important role that birth control can play in reducing child poverty and improve social mobility. Sawhill wants to take the pregnancy out of sex by blending personal responsibility with increased access to and information about birth control

Personality, interests, and self-efficacy: The incremental validity of basic level constructs in discriminating among college majors and occupational aspirations

Although interests, personality, and self-efficacy have long been linked to academic and career choices, many studies examine only one or two constructs at a time and few fully address the multiple determination of academic and career choices. This study builds on previous research by addressing the incremental validity of measuring multiple constructs concurrently, as well as by addressing the incremental validity of basic level constructs. Interests, personality, and self-efficacy can all be measured at multiple levels of specificity, and early research has shown support for the incremental validity of basic level constructs beyond their broad level counterpart. An additional contribution of the present study is the simultaneous measurement of both college major and future occupational aspirations, another comparison rarely made in vocational research. Discriminant function analysis of data from 948 students enrolled at a large Midwestern University resulted in support for the incremental validity of the full model including all three constructs versus any pair of constructs for both college major and occupational aspiration. Clear support was also shown for the incremental validity of basic level constructs for both college major and occupational aspirations, with an additional 20.7% of students correctly classified into their major group and an additional 28% correctly classified into their occupational aspiration group. Implications for counseling and assessment, limitations, and future directions are also discussed

Samskaping i omsorgssektoren Hvordan kan enhetsledere av hjemmetjenestene i Trondheim kommune fremme samskaping?

Samskaping er en av de overordnede strategiene i Trondheim kommune og jeg har studert hvordan enhetsledere av hjemmetjenester kan bidra til å fremme samskapende lærings- og utviklingsprosesser. Mitt utgangspunkt er et hermeneutisk vitenskapssyn og jeg har valgt å benytte en kvalitativ casestudie. Studiet baseres i hovedsak på dybdeintervju av elleve enhetsledere. Jeg har i tillegg valgt dokumentanalyse av kommunenes styringsdokumenter for å kunne si noe om hvilken forståelse og formål kommunen har med samskaping, hvordan arbeidet er planlagt gjennomført og operasjonalisert, samt hvilken rolle mellomledere er tenkt å ha i dette samarbeidet. Jeg har forsøkt å være transparent i gjennomføringen av forskningen, og gir en inngående beskrivelse av forskningsprosessen i metodekapittelet. Å være transparent kan gjøre mine funn generaliserbare, selv om de ikke er statistisk generaliserbar. Dette innebærer at jeg vil kunne si noe om hvilken erfaring enhetsledere i omsorgssektoren i Trondheim kommune har med samskaping, men i mindre grad si noe om dette er representativt for omsorgsledere i andre norske kommuner. Mine funn viser at ambisjonsnivået som er gjengitt i styringsdokumentene om forventning til å ta i bruk samskaping som metode, for blant annet å utvikle tjenester og løse komplekse samfunnsutfordringer, ikke gjenspeiles i funn fra intervjuene. Enhetslederne opplever et begrenset handlingsrom til å samskape, og samlet trekker de frem organisatoriske barrierer, begrensede økonomiske rammer og politiske føringer som barrierer for radikal samskaping. Manglende risikovillighet og tro på egen egnethet i å skulle lede samskapingsprosesser er andre funn fra intervjuene. Dette kan også være årsaken til at de fleste radikale samkapingsprosessene som enhetslederne deltar i er top-down initiert samskaping, og hvor de ofte kommer sent inn i prosessen. Konservativ samskaping er derimot utbredt i hjemmetjenesten i den direkte tjenesteytingen. Funn fra intervjuene viser at den oppleves som innvevd i den daglige virksomheten og kan til en viss grad være usynlig for ansatte og ledere
