    Non-extremal D-instantons

    Get PDF
We construct the most general non-extremal deformation of the D-instanton solution with maximal rotational symmetry. The general non-supersymmetric solution carries electric charges of the SL(2,R) symmetry, which correspond to each of the three conjugacy classes of SL(2,R). Our calculations naturally generalise to arbitrary dimensions and arbitrary dilaton couplings. We show that for specific values of the dilaton coupling parameter, the non-extremal instanton solutions can be viewed as wormholes of non-extremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes in one higher dimension. We extend this result by showing that for other values of the dilaton coupling parameter, the non-extremal instanton solutions can be uplifted to non-extremal non-dilatonic p-branes in p+1 dimensions higher. Finally, we attempt to consider the solutions as instantons of (compactified) type IIB superstring theory. In particular, we derive an elegant formula for the instanton action. We conjecture that the non-extremal D-instantons can contribute to the R^8-terms in the type IIB string effective action.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures. v3: minor correction and reference adde

    Two-Body Cabibbo-Suppressed Charmed Meson Decays

    Get PDF
Singly-Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charmed particles governed by the quark subprocesses c→susˉc \to s u \bar s and c→dudˉc \to d u \bar d are analyzed using a flavor-topology approach, based on a previous analysis of the Cabibbo-favored decays governed by c→sudˉc \to s u \bar d. Decays to PPPP and PVPV, where PP is a pseudoscalar meson and VV is a vector meson, are considered. We include processes in which η\eta and η′\eta ' are produced.Comment: 18 pages, latex, 2 figures, to be submitted to Phys. Rev.

SU(3) Predictions for Weak Decays of Doubly Heavy Baryons -- including SU(3) breaking terms

    Get PDF
We find expressions for the weak decay amplitudes of baryons containing two b quarks (or one b and one c quark -- many relationship are the same) in terms of unknown reduced matrix elements. This project was originally motivated by the request of the FNAL Run II b Physics Workshop organizers for a guide to experimentalists in their search for as yet unobserved hadrons. We include an analysis of linear SU(3) breaking terms in addition to relationships generated by unbroken SU(3) symmetry, and relate these to expressions in terms of the complete set of possible reduced matrix elements.Comment: 49 page

Managerial judgment and forecast combination: An experimental study

This paper examines the role of managerial judgment in forming a final forecast, or judging the achievability of a critical level of sales, when multiple forecasts or opinions are available to the decision maker. Several factors that can help improve the quality of human intervention are identified and incorporated in a decision aid. Experimental results show that aided combination can help the decision maker exploit her relevant private information and mitigate the generally observed negative effects of human intervention. Further, the results suggest that emphasizing expected sales, even when the organization is primarily interested in go/no-go decisions, helps improve performance. Several suggestions for future research are presented.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47133/1/11002_2004_Article_BF00993954.pd
