Politics and Trade Policy: An Empirical Investigation

In this paper we examine the empirical relevance of three prominent endogenous protection models. Is protection for sale, or do altruistic policy makers worry about political support? We find strong evidence that protection is indeed "for sale." The important new result is, however, that not only the existence of lobbies matters, but also the relative size of the sectoral pro and anti protection contributions. All variables of both the Influence Driven (Grossman and Helpman, 1994) and the Tariff Function (Findlay and Wellisz, 1982) models are significant at the one percent level. Novel is our application of a single, unified theoretical framework to take strict interpretations of the three theoretical models to the data. We thus extend the previous tests of the Influence Driven approach by comparing its performance to well specified alternatives. Using J tests to compare the power of the models directly, we find significant misspecification in the Political Support Function approach. We cannot reject the null hypothesis of correct specification of the Influence Driven model and find evidence of some misspecification in the Tariff Function model.Endogenous protection, lobbying, political economy of tariffs

Germany’s Continued Productivity Slump: An Industry Analysis

US productivity growth surged twice post 1995 and post 2000. In contrast Germany registered two successive productivity reductions during that same period of time. Previous analysis of the post-2000 decline has been limited, however, by the short time series of the available data. In this paper we extend the Ifo Industry Growth Accounting Database that provides detailed industry-level investment information up to 2004. While much attention has focused on the reduction in German labor hours, our post-2000 data shows that a fledgling recovery in German non-ICT investment was offset by a widespread collapse in German total factor productivity. Almost half of German industries (accounting for over 45 percent of German output) did not experience positive TFP growth post 2000. Industries that constitute over a quarter of Germany’s value-added exhibited negative labor productivity growth during the same period. The Ifo Industry Growth Accounting Database

In this paper we present a new database that allows deep industry-level growth accounting from 1991–2003. The database allows for the first complete analysis of the German industry performance drivers based on the contributions of 12 asset types in 52 different industries. The industry sources of productivity and output growth are crucial to the understanding of the transformation of the German economy from manufacturing to information technology and service industries. The database enables researchers to develop an adequate picture of the sources of growth using standard growth accounting techniques. Seit 2005 untersucht das ifo Institut die Determinanten der deutschen Produktivitätsschwäche. Hierzu wurde eine Datenbank eingerichtet. Sie stellt breit gefächerte Informationen zu Investitionen und Kapitaldienstleistungen auf Branchenebene zur Verfügung, wodurch eine Unterteilung in IT-produzierende, IT-nutzende und nicht-IT-intensive Wirtschaftszweige möglich ist. Die Angaben zu Softwareinvestitionen beruhen, im Gegensatz zu anderen Datenbanken, nicht auf Schätzungen, sondern auf Studien und Umfragen des ifo Instituts. Und die Datenbank liefert branchenspezifische Zeitreihen zur Bruttowertschöpfung, zu qualitätsadjustierten Arbeitsstunden und zum technologischen Wandel. Die Angaben der ifo Produktivitätsdatenbank zeigen, dass ein verstärktes Wachstum der IT-Kapitalintensität nach 1995 zwar positive Auswirkungen auf das Produktivitätswachstum in Deutschland hatte, aber doch zu schwach war, um den Wachstumsrückgang der Nicht-IT-Kapitalintensität aufzufangen.Produktivität, Branche Wirtschaftswachstum, Datenbank, Deutschland, Vereinigte Staaten

The tripartite efflux system AcrA/AcrB/TolC is the main pump in Escherichia coli for the efflux of multiple antibiotics, dyes, bile salts and detergents. The inner membrane component AcrB is central to substrate recognition and energy transduction and acts as a proton/drug antiporter. L’ailleurs que cet article explore réside dans les écrits que l’intertextualité convoque pour conférer à la représentation une dimension supplémentaire. Dans La Mine de Falun de Hofmannsthal, titre et déroulement de l’action se réfèrent à un sujet riche de toute une tradition dont les principaux représentants sont les romantiques. C’est la version de Hoffmann qui fournit à la pièce sa toile de fond, mais les modifications opérées par Hofmannsthal sont décisives. Il renonce ainsi à la fin au cœur de la légende, encore présent chez Hoffmann : la conservation, cinquante ans après sa mort, du corps d’un mineur enseveli sous un éboulement, et son identification par sa fiancée qui lui a gardé fidélité. L’abandon de ce dénouement place la psychologie des personnages au premier plan – c’est du moins la réalité textuelle manifeste. Mais, même aux alentours de 1900, les adaptations romantiques du sujet poursuivent leur vie sous forme de citation, complétées par des allusions à d’autres textes du romantisme, tels ceux des frères Grimm ou de Novalis. Unter Verzicht auf diesen Abschluß wird bei Hofmannsthal der Blick auf die Psychologie der Figuren gerichtet – so will es zumindest die Textoberfläche. Doch leben auch um 1900 die romantischen Adaptionen des Stoffes als Zitate fort und werden überdies durch andere Anspielungen auf Texte der Romantik – etwa von den Brüdern Grimm und Novalis – ergänzt. The abandon of this denouement puts characters' psychology in the foreground – it is at least the manifest textual reality. However, even around 1900, the Romantic adaptations of the subject make their way as quotations, completed by allusions to other texts from the Romantic era, such as the ones of the Brothers Grimm or Novalis. Combined Simulation of a Micro Permanent Magnetic Linear Contactless Displacement Sensor

The permanent magnetic linear contactless displacement (PLCD) sensor is a new type of displacement sensor operating on the magnetic inductive principle. It has many excellent properties and has already been used for many applications. In this article a Micro-PLCD sensor which can be used for microelectromechanical system (MEMS) measurements is designed and simulated with the CST EM STUDIO® software, including building a virtual model, magnetostatic calculations, low frequency calculations, steady current calculations and thermal calculations. The influence of some important parameters such as air gap dimension, working frequency, coil current and eddy currents etc. is studied in depth
