    هدفت الدراسة إلى التحقق من تكافؤ البنية العاملية بمستوياتها الأربعة (الشكلي، المتري، القياسي، ومستوى البواقي) لمقياس حب الاستطلاع العلمي عبر النوع الاجتماعي والمحافظة بسلطنة عُمان، وقد تكونت عينة الدراسة من657 طالبًا، و587 طالبة من التعليم الأساسي بالصفين التاسع والعاشر في ثلاث محافظات (مسقط، الشرقية شمال، الداخلية)، وتوصلت نتائج الدراسة إلى تحقق تكافؤ البنية العاملية بجميع مستوياتها، مما يعني إمكانية إجراء المقارنات بين المجموعات المختلفة محل الدراسة وفق النوع الاجتماعي والمحافظة. وقد أوصى الباحثون بإمكانية استخدام المقياس في دراسة الفروق بين الجنسين على مستوى المحافظات لمستوى حب الاستطلاع العلمي

    Assessment of the distal runoff in patients with long standing diabetes mellitus and lower limb ischemia: MDCTA versus DSA

    AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) in comparison with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with long standing diabetes mellitus and chronic lower limb ischemia.Subjects and methodsOne hundred patients with long standing DM and chronic limb ischemia underwent both CT angiography and DSA. The distal runoff of each lower limb was divided into 13 arterial segments. The status of each segment was graded as: 1, (normal or less than 10% stenosis); 2, (10–49% stenosis); 3, (50–99% stenosis); 4, occlusion. The effect of calcification on the diagnostic accuracy of CT angiography was evaluated. CTA findings were compared with DSA findings for each arterial segment. The sensitivity and specificity of CT angiography were determined using DSA as the gold standard.ResultsA total of 100 patients were included (mean age, 58years; 70% men). The sensitivity and specificity of CT angiography were significantly affected by the degree of vessel wall calcification, and increase the need for additional imaging.ConclusionVessel wall calcifications decrease the diagnostic accuracy of CT angiography in patients with long standing DM and peripheral arterial disease

    A polishing the harmful effects of Broad Bean Mottle Virus infecting broad bean plants by enhancing the immunity using different potassium concentrations

    Broad bean mottle virus (BBMV) infects a wide range of hosts, resulting in significant production reductions. The lack of adequate and effective control methods involves implementing novel BBMV control strategies. Herein, we demonstrate the effect of different potassium concentrations (20, 40, and 60 mM) against BBMV in broad bean plants. Potassium could control BBMV infection in broad bean by inhibiting the virus. In addition, infection with BBMV caused a significant decrease in morphological criteria, SPDA, photosynthetic characteristics, phytohormones, and mineral content in broad bean leaves compared to control plants. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radical, and oxygen anion) and ROS scavenging enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, phenylaniline ammonia-lyase, chitinase, and 1,3 - glucanase) increased significantly in plants inoculated with BBMV alone or in the presence of K+. In addition, proline and phenolic compounds increased significantly after being infected with BBMV. In conclusion, treatment with a high potassium concentration (60 mM) alleviates the adverse effect of BBMV on broad bean plants by boosting secondary metabolites, phytohormones, and enzymatic antioxidants

    RC beams under blast loads: Numerical simulation and machine learning modeling

    AbstractThe use of explosives to target civilian buildings and other structures around the world is becoming a growing problem in modern societies. This paper focuses on RC beams exposed to free-air blast loads. The paper first presents a parametric study on the behavior of RC beams subjected to blast loads using finite element simulation and then proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to predict that behavior in a simple and easy manner. The ABAQUS program is used to simulate RC beams under blast loads. Experimental data was collected from the literature and used to validate the ABAQUS models. Deflection, reaction forces, ultimate stress, ultimate strain, and failure mode of RC beams are investigated. The considered design parameters in the parametric study are the characteristic compressive strength of concrete (fcu), the transverse reinforcement ratio (ρT%), the longitudinal reinforcement ratio (ρL%), and the scaled distance (Z). In this paper, the proposed ANN model was trained and tested using datasets produced using ABAQUS. The input parameters of the ANN model are TNT weight, standoff distance (D), characteristic compressive strength of concrete, transverse reinforcement ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, width-to-thickness ratio (b/t), and length-to-thickness ratio (L/t). The predicted behavior using the ANN model showed the credibility of the model. The results indicated that L/t, b/t, and Z have significant effects on the behavior of RC beams under blast loads compared with fcu, ρT%, and ρL%, the cracks area increases with the decrease in Z, fcu, and b/t and decreases with L/t decrease

    Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in camels recently imported to Egypt from Sudan and a global systematic review.

    INTRODUCTION Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are closely related intracellular protozoan parasites of medical and veterinary concern by causing abortions and systemic illness. Limited or ambiguous data on the prevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum in camels triggered us to conduct this study. METHODS Camels (n = 460) recently imported from Sudan and destined mainly for human consumption, were tested for specific antibodies against these protozoans using commercially available ELISAs. From the two only quarantine stations for camels from Sudan, 368 camels were sampled between November 2015 and March 2016 in Shalateen, Red Sea governorate, and 92 samples were collected between September 2018 and March 2021 from Abu Simbel, Aswan governorate. RESULTS & DISCUSSION Overall, seropositive rates in camels were 25.7%, 3.9% and 0.8% for T. gondii, N. caninum and mixed infection, respectively. However, marked differences were found between the two study sites and/or the two sampling periods: For T. gondii, a higher rate of infection was recorded in the Red Sea samples (31.5%, 116/368; odds ratio 20.7, 5.0-85.6; P<0.0001) than in those collected in Aswan (2.2%, 2/92). The opposite was found for N. caninum with a lower rate of infection in the Red Sea samples (0.82%, 3/368; odds ratio 23.7, 6.7-83.9; P<0.0001) than in the samples from Aswan (16.3%, 15/92). Additionally, our systematic review revealed that the overall published seroprevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum was 28.6% and 14.3% in camels worldwide, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first record of seroprevalence of both T. gondii and N. caninum in recently imported camels kept under quarantine conditions before delivery to other Egyptian cities and regions. In addition, our review provides inclusive data on the prevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum in camel globally. This knowledge provides basic data for the implementation of strategies and control measures against neosporosis and toxoplasmosis

    Wound healing and antioxidant properties of <i>Launaea procumbens</i> supported by metabolomic profiling and molecular docking

    Wounds adversely affect people’s quality of life and have psychological, social, and economic impacts. Herbal remedies of Launaea procumbens (LP) are used to treat wounds. In an excision wound model, topical application of LP significantly promoted wound closure (on day 14, LP-treated animals had the highest percentages of wound closure in comparison with the other groups, as the wound was entirely closed with a closure percentage of 100%, p < 0.05). Histological analysis revealed a considerable rise in the number of fibroblasts, the amount of collagen, and its cross-linking in LP-treated wounds. Gene expression patterns showed significant elevation of TGF-β levels (2.1-fold change after 7 days treatment and 2.7-fold change in 14 days treatment) and downregulation of the inflammatory TNF-α and IL-1β levels in LP-treated wounds. Regarding in vitro antioxidant activity, LP extract significantly diminished the formation of H(2)O(2) radical (IC(50) = 171.6 μg/mL) and scavenged the superoxide radical (IC(50) of 286.7 µg/mL), indicating antioxidant potential in a dose-dependent manner. Dereplication of the secondary metabolites using LC-HRMS resulted in the annotation of 16 metabolites. The identified compounds were docked against important wound-healing targets, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), collagen α-1, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). Among dereplicated compounds, luteolin 8-C-glucoside (orientin) demonstrated binding potential to four investigated targets (VEGF, interleukin 1β, TNF-α, and collagen α-1). To conclude, Launaea procumbens extract could be regarded as a promising topical therapy to promote wound healing in excisional wounds, and luteolin 8-C-glucoside (orientin), one of its constituents, is a potential wound-healing drug lead

    The impact of chronic rhinosinusitis on COVID-19 risk and outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    BackgroundThe impact of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and subsequent steroid therapy on acquiring COVID-19 and severe outcomes remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to provide cumulative evidence regarding the risk of COVID-19 and the impact of steroid therapy, length of hospital stay, mechanical ventilation, and mortality among CRC patients.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive electronic search strategy using the relevant keywords. The outcomes and risk factors of COVID-19 in CRS patients was estimated and compared to a healthy control group when applicable.ResultsA total of seven studies were included, with an estimated prevalence of 6.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.5-15.7) for COVID-19 in the CRS group. COVID-19 prevalence did not differ between CRS and controls (odds ratio (OR): 0.92; 95%CI: 0.84-1.01; p = 0.08). Moreover, using steroid/immunosuppressive therapy did not significantly increase the risk of acquiring COVID-19 in CRS patients compared to the control group (OR: 3.31; 95%CI: 0.72-15.26; p = 0.12). Length of hospital stay, mechanical ventilation, and mortality rates were comparable between the two groups. Furthermore, we found that male sex, cardiovascular morbidity, renal diseases, and hypertension were inversely associated with COVID-19 infection (p &lt; 0.01).ConclusionCRS had a neutral effect on acquiring COVID-19 and developing severe outcomes.     Intraoperative endomanometric laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication improves postoperative outcomes in large sliding hiatus hernia with severe gastroesophageal reflux disease. A retrospective cohort study

    Background: Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (LNF) is the gold standard surgical intervention for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). LNF can be followed by recurrent symptoms or complications affecting patient satisfaction. The aim of this study is to assess the value of the intraoperative endomanometric evaluation of esophagogastric competence and pressure combined with LNF in patients with large sliding hiatus hernia (&gt; 5&nbsp;cm) with severe GERD (DeMeester score &gt;100). Materials and methods: This is a retrospective, multicenter cohort study. Baseline characteristics, postoperative dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome, recurrent symptoms, and satisfaction were collected from a prospectively maintained database. Outcomes analyzed included recurrent reflux symptoms, postoperative side effects, and satisfaction with surgery. Results: 360 patients were stratified into endomanometric LNF (180 patients, LNF+) and LNF alone (180 patients, LNF). Recurrent heartburn (3.9% vs. 8.3%) and recurrent regurgitation (2.2% vs. 5%) showed a lower incidence in the LNF+ group (P=0.012). Postoperative score III recurrent heartburn and score III regurgitations occurred in 0% vs. 3.3% and 0% vs. 2.8% cases in the LNF+ and LNF groups, respectively (P=0.005). Postoperative persistent dysphagia and gas bloat syndrome occurred in 1.75% vs. 5.6% and 0% vs. 3.9% of patients (P=0.001). Score III postoperative persistent dysphagia was 0% vs. 2.8% in the two groups (P=0.007). There was no redo surgery for dysphagia after LNF+. Patient satisfaction at the end of the study was 93.3% vs. 86.7% in both cohorts, respectively (P=0.05). Conclusions: Intraoperative high-resolution manometry (HRM) and endoscopic were feasible in all patients, and the outcomes were favorable from an effectiveness and safety standpoint
