    Local Magnetic Susceptibility of the Positive Muon in the Quasi 1D S=1/2 Antiferromagnet KCuF3_3

    We report muon spin rotation measurements of the local magnetic susceptibility around a positive muon in the paramagnetic state of the quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 antiferromagnet KCuF3_3. Signals from two distinct sites are resolved which have a temperature dependent frequency shift which is different than the magnetic susceptibility.     Numerical Evidence for Multiplicative Logarithmic Corrections from Marginal Operators

    Field theory calculations predict multiplicative logarithmic corrections to correlation functions from marginally irrelevant operators. However, for the numerically most suitable model - the spin-1/2 chain - these corrections have been controversial. In this paper, the spin-spin correlation function of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain is calculated numerically in the presence of a next nearest neighbor coupling J2 for chains of up to 32 sites. By varying the coupling strength J2 we can control the effect of the marginal operator, and our results unambiguously confirm the field theory predictions. The critical value at which the marginal operator vanishes has been determined to be at J2 = 0.241167 +/- 0.000005J.Comment: revised paper with extended data-analysis. 5 pages, using revtex with 4 embedded figures (included with macro).     Universal cross-over behavior of a magnetic impurity and consequences for doping in spin-1/2 chains

    We consider a magnetic impurity in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain which is equivalent to the two-channel Kondo problem in terms of the field theoretical description. Using a modification of the transfer-matrix density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) we are able to determine local and global properties in the thermodynamic limit. The cross-over function for the impurity susceptibility is calculated over a large temperature range, which exhibits universal data-collapse. We are also able to determine the local susceptibilities near the impurity, which show an interesting competition of boundary effects. This results in quantitative predictions for experiments on doped spin-1/2 chains, which could observe two-channel Kondo physics directly.Comment: 5 pages in revtex format including 3 embedded figures (using epsf).     Isolation of three novel rat and mouse papillomaviruses and their genomic characterization.

    Despite a growing knowledge about the biological diversity of papillomaviruses (PV), only little is known about non-human PV in general and about PV mice models in particular. We cloned and sequenced the complete genomes of two novel PV types from the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus; RnPV2) and the wood mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus; AsPV1) as well as a novel variant of the recently described MmuPV1 (originally designated as MusPV) from a house mouse (Mus musculus; MmuPV1 variant). In addition, we conducted phylogenetic analyses using a systematically representative set of 79 PV types, including the novel sequences. As inferred from concatenated amino acid sequences of six proteins, MmuPV1 variant and AsPV1 nested within the Beta+Xi-PV super taxon as members of the Pi-PV. RnPV2 is a member of the Iota-PV that has a distant phylogenetic position from Pi-PV. The phylogenetic results support a complex scenario of PV diversification driven by different evolutionary forces including co-divergence with hosts and adaptive radiations to new environments. PV types particularly isolated from mice and rats are the basis for new animal models, which are valuable to study PV induced tumors and new treatment options

    Improving Small Object Proposals for Company Logo Detection

    Many modern approaches for object detection are two-staged pipelines. The first stage identifies regions of interest which are then classified in the second stage. Faster R-CNN is such an approach for object detection which combines both stages into a single pipeline. In this paper we apply Faster R-CNN to the task of company logo detection. Motivated by its weak performance on small object instances, we examine in detail both the proposal and the classification stage with respect to a wide range of object sizes. We investigate the influence of feature map resolution on the performance of those stages. Based on theoretical considerations, we introduce an improved scheme for generating anchor proposals and propose a modification to Faster R-CNN which leverages higher-resolution feature maps for small objects. We evaluate our approach on the FlickrLogos dataset improving the RPN performance from 0.52 to 0.71 (MABO) and the detection performance from 0.52 to 0.67 (mAP).Comment: 8 Pages, ICMR 201

    Wissenschaftlicher Bericht - FZKA 6035 Thermomechanische Versuche mit dem First Wall Mock-up TS1 Ein Ausschnitt (Mock-up) der Ersten Wand vom Design für den Next European Torus (NET) stand als wasser-gekühlte Stahl-Struktur für Experimente zur Verfügung. Weil der Mock-up Vorschädigungen durch eine große Zahl von Thermoelement-Bohrungen aufwies, war er nicht für thermische Ermüdungsexperimente vorgesehen; vielmehr wurde er als prototypische Hintergrundstruktur verwendet für thermomechanische Tests mit Schutzziegeln auf Graphit-Basis und deren Haltevorrichtungen. In einer ersten Testreihe wurde die Oberfläche des ungeschützten Mock-ups einer thermischen Last ausgesetzt. Die Vorhersage einer FE Modellrechnung konnte mit Dehnungen, die auf seiner Rückseite gemessen wurden, in vernünftigem Umfang bestätigt werden. In einer zweiten Testreihe wurde der Mock-up mit einem strahlungs-gekühlten Ziegel, der nicht in engem thermischen Kontakt mit dem Mock-up stand, geschützt. Die Tests zeigten, daß es sehr wichtig ist, auf angemessen dimensionierte Spalte zu achten, die Unterschiede in der thermischen Ausdehnung und Verbiegung auch während der thermischen Transienten zulassen. Schließlich wurde der Mock-up mit leitungs-gekühlten Ziegeln, die mit einer Zwischenschicht aus flexiblem Graphit auf den Mock-up gedrückt wurden, geschützt. Die Testergebnisse zeigten, daß der Wärmeübergang an der Kontaktschicht gleichmäßig war und auch nach thermischen Zyklen auf hohem Temperatur-Niveau zuverlässig erhalten blieb

    Interaction effects between impurities in low dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets

    We are considering the interplay between several non-magnetic impurities in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in chains, ladders and planes by introducing static vacancies in numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The effective potential between two and more impurities is accurately determined, which gives a direct measure of the quantum correlations in the systems. Large effective interaction potentials are an indication of strong quantum correlations in the system and reflect the detailed nature of the valence bond ground states. In two-dimensions (2D) the interactions are smaller, but can still be analyzed in terms of valence bonds.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Europhys. Lett.     Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids

    The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series for JEMS 201

    Phase diagram of an impurity in the spin-1/2 chain: two channel Kondo effect versus Curie law

    We consider a magnetic s=1/2 impurity in the antiferromagnetic spin chain as a function of two coupling parameters: the symmetric coupling of the impurity to two sites in the chain J1J_1 and the coupling between the two sites J2J_2. By using field theory arguments and numerical calculations we can identify all possible fixed points and classify the renormalization flow between them, which leads to a non-trivial phase diagram. Depending on the detailed choice of the two (frustrating) coupling strengths, the stable phases correspond either to a decoupled spin with Curie law behavior or to a non-Fermi liquid fixed point with a logarithmically diverging impurity susceptibility as in the two channel Kondo effect.
