    Small-scale Fishermen and Risk Preferences

    Using an experimental approach, we investigate the risk preferences of artisanal fishermen in Tanzania waters of Lake Victoria. The experiment concerns pairwise comparisons of hypothetical fishing trips that vary in expected mean and spread of the net revenue. The results show that about 34% of the fishermen can be considered as risk neutral, 32% as risk averse, and 34% as risk seekers. Econometric analysis indicates that the likelihood of belonging to the risk-seeking group increases if motorboats are used, if fishing is the main source of household income, and if the fisherman is targeting Nile perch.     Boundary Effects on Spectral Properties of Interacting Electrons in One Dimension

    The single electron Green's function of the one-dimensional Tomonaga-Luttinger model in the presence of open boundaries is calculated with bosonization methods. We show that the critical exponents of the local spectral density and of the momentum distribution change in the presence of a boundary. The well understood universal bulk behavior always crosses over to a boundary dominated regime for small energies or small momenta. We show this crossover explicitly for the large-U Hubbard model in the low-temperature limit.     The Hidden Role of Non-Canonical Amyloid beta Isoforms in Alzheimer's Disease

    Recent advances have placed the pro-inflammatory activity of amyloid β (Aβ) on microglia cells as the focus of research on Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Researchers are confronted with an astonishing spectrum of over 100 different Aβ variants with variable length and chemical modifications. With the exception of Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-40, the biological significance of most peptides for AD is as yet insufficiently understood. We therefore aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the contributions of these neglected Aβ variants to microglia activation. First, the impact of Aβ receptors, signaling cascades, scavenger mechanisms, and genetic variations on the physiological responses towards various Aβ species is described. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of different types of amyloid precursor protein processing for the generation of these Aβ variants in microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and neurons, and highlight how alterations in secondary structures and oligomerization affect Aβ neurotoxicity. In sum, the data indicate that gene polymorphisms in Aβ-driven signaling pathways in combination with the production and activity of different Aβ variants might be crucial factors for the initiation and progression of different forms of AD. A deeper assessment of their interplay with glial cells may pave the way towards novel therapeutic strategies for individualized medicine

    On Conceptually Simple Algorithms for Variants of Online Bipartite Matching

    We present a series of results regarding conceptually simple algorithms for bipartite matching in various online and related models. We first consider a deterministic adversarial model. The best approximation ratio possible for a one-pass deterministic online algorithm is 1/21/2, which is achieved by any greedy algorithm. D\"urr et al. recently presented a 22-pass algorithm called Category-Advice that achieves approximation ratio 3/53/5. We extend their algorithm to multiple passes. We prove the exact approximation ratio for the kk-pass Category-Advice algorithm for all k1k \ge 1, and show that the approximation ratio converges to the inverse of the golden ratio 2/(1+5)0.6182/(1+\sqrt{5}) \approx 0.618 as kk goes to infinity. The convergence is extremely fast --- the 55-pass Category-Advice algorithm is already within 0.01%0.01\% of the inverse of the golden ratio. We then consider a natural greedy algorithm in the online stochastic IID model---MinDegree. This algorithm is an online version of a well-known and extensively studied offline algorithm MinGreedy. We show that MinDegree cannot achieve an approximation ratio better than 11/e1-1/e, which is guaranteed by any consistent greedy algorithm in the known IID model. Finally, following the work in Besser and Poloczek, we depart from an adversarial or stochastic ordering and investigate a natural randomized algorithm (MinRanking) in the priority model. Although the priority model allows the algorithm to choose the input ordering in a general but well defined way, this natural algorithm cannot obtain the approximation of the Ranking algorithm in the ROM model

    A Monoidal View on Fixpoint Checks

    Fixpoints are ubiquitous in computer science as they play a central role in providing a meaning to recursive and cyclic definitions. Bisimilarity, behavioural metrics, termination probabilities for Markov chains and stochastic games are defined in terms of least or greatest fixpoints. Here we show that our recent work which proposes a technique for checking whether the fixpoint of a function is the least (or the largest) admits a natural categorical interpretation in terms of gs-monoidal categories. The technique is based on a construction that maps a function to a suitable approximation and the compositionality properties of this mapping are naturally interpreted as a gs-monoidal functor. This guides the realisation of a tool, called UDEfix that allows to build functions (and their approximations) like a circuit out of basic building blocks and subsequently perform the fixpoints checks. We also show that a slight generalisation of the theory allows one to treat a new relevant case study: coalgebraic behavioural metrics based on Wasserstein liftings

    Coherence Properties of the Repulsive Anyon-Hubbard Dimer

    One-dimensional anyonic models of the Hubbard type show intriguing ground-state properties, effectively transmuting between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. The simplest model that one can investigate is an anyonic version of the bosonic Josephson junction, the repulsive anyon-Hubbard dimer. In the following we find an exact duality relation to the Bethe-solvable Bose-Hubbard dimer, which is well known from quantum optics and information theory and has interesting connections to spin squeezing and entangled coherent states. Conversely, we show that the anyonic Hubbard dimer has non-trivial coherence properties for large particle numbers, which can potentially be probed by cold atom experiments. We find that the statistical interactions act as excitation-selective filters or amplifiers for large particle numbers NN, determining the fate of multi-body coherences depending on their commensurability with respect to the exchange parameter θ\theta.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, for more information and latest version see https://www.physik.uni-kl.de/eggert/papers

    Using the Bethe ansatz method, the zero frequency contribution (Drude weight) to the spin current correlations is analyzed for the easy plane antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. The Drude weight is a monotonically decreasing function of temperature for all 0<Delta< 1, it approaches the zero temperature value with a power law and it appears to vanish for all finite temperatures at the isotropic Delta=1 point.Comment: 5 pages, 2 Postscript figure

    Search of low-dimensional magnetics on the basis of structural data: spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic zigzag chain compounds In2VO5, beta-Sr(VOAsO4)2,(NH4,K)2VOF4 and alpha-ZnV3O8

    A new technique for searching low-dimensional compounds on the basis of structural data is presented. The sign and strength of all magnetic couplings at distances up to 12 A in five predicted new antiferromagnetic zigzag spin-1/2 chain compounds In2VO5, beta-Sr(VOAsO4)2, (NH4)2VOF4, K2VOF4 and alpha-ZnV3O8 were calculated. It was stated that in the compound In2VO5 zigzag spin chains are frustrated, since the ratio (J2/J1) of competing antiferromagnetic (AF) nearest- (J1) and AF next-to-nearest-neighbour (J2) couplings is equal to 1.68 that exceeds the Majumdar-Ghosh point by 1/2. In other compounds the zigzag spin chains are AF magnetically ordered single chains as value of ratios J2/J1 is close to zero.
