Background: AIDS and Protein energy malnutrition (PEM) severely impair the immune system Cryptosporidium has over the last two decades emerged as a life threatening disease. The study attempts to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in malnourished children with HIV/AIDS. Method: Blood and stool samples of 52 HIV-seropositive children and another 52 HIV-sero-negative children aged 0-5 years were collected and screened for HIV and Cryptosporidium oocysts respectively. The sera were screened by double ELISA and the stool by the modified Ziehl-Neelsen method. Results: Out of the 52 HIV-seropositive undernourished, under-five children, none (0%) excreted Cryptosporidium oocyst in their stools while 2 (3.8%) of the control group excreted the oocyst. Conclusion: Cryptosporidium infection seems to be uncommon among undernourished under five children with HIV/AIDS in Jos. Background: Neonatal sepsis is very prevalent in sub-saharan Africa and contributes up to 69% to neonatal mortality in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the predominant socio-economic factors that may contribute to neonatal sepsis in this environment.Methodology: The study was a cross-sectional study conducted in Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), Jos, North Central, Nigeria. Clinical and demographic data were collected from mothers, care givers and case notes of 218 neonates enrolled into the study by means of a structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed by EPI Info statistical package. Biological samples were also collected from the neonates and processed by standard methods in the microbiology laboratory of JUTH.Results: Bacteria were isolated in 34.4% of the neonates studied. The most common isolates were Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Delivery at home had the highest percentage of culture proven sepsis (52.2%). Mothers with no formal education and those with only primary education also had high proportions of culture proven sepsis (41.1% and 58.8% respectively). Place of domicile, level of education of mother and poor feeding were factors that contributed significantly to neonatal sepsis by odds ratio. Conclusion: The findings show that socioeconomic factors have a significant impact on neonatal sepsis. An improved standard of living, education and empowerment of women and increased provision of basic social amenities will go a long way in reducing the morbidity and mortality of neonatal sepsis in our environment

Vaginal douche products have been associated with cervical cancer. We examined female sex workers (FSWs) in Nigeria who douche with lemon or lime juice and compared the findings with that of nonusers. We obtained Pap smears and performed colposcopy of the vulva, vagina and cervix. A total of 374 FSWs comprising 81 Lemon users (LUs) and 293 non lemon users (NLUs) were examined. Their mean age was 27.8 ± 6.7 (range 16-63) years. At colposcopy, 17(4.5%) had genital warts [LUs 5(6.2%); NLUs 12(4.1%); p=0.43], 61(16.3%) had suspectedsquamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) [LUs 17(21.0%); NLUs 44(15.0%); p=0.20] and 65(17.4%) had other findings. Pap smear cytology showed that 87(24.6%) had SILs [LUs 26(33.3%); NLUs 61(22.1%); p=0.03]. Lemon/lime use was associated with cervical dysplasia after controlling for HIV status (Adjusted OR=1.8; 95% CI,1.0-3.0). Our data suggests an association between the practice of douching with citrus juice and cervical dysplasia (Afr J Reprod Health 2009; 13[1]:37-45)

This retrospective study was designed to ascertain the epidemiological sources and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of Proteus mirabilis strains recovered from urogenital specimens in Jos University Teaching Hospital; (JUTH) over a five year period (Janurary 2000 – December 2004). Information on epidemiological and clinical sources of P. mirabilis strains, their antibiogram profiles and the demographic data of infected subjects were obtained from the Microbiology and Records Departments. Results were analyzed by Epi Info 2002 statistical software, P value
