    Requirements engineering for model-based enterprise architecture management with ArchiMate

    The role of information systems (IS) evolved from supporting basic business functions to complex integrated enterprise platforms and ecosystems. As a result, enterprises increasingly adopt enterprise architecture (EA) as a means to manage complexity and support the ability to change. We initiated a study that investigates the pivotal role of enterprise architecture management (EAM) as an essential strategy to manage enterprise change and within this larger context, specifically how the ArchiMate modeling language can be enhanced with capabilities that support EAM. This paper reports on the evaluation of an EA modeling tool (TEAM) which has been enhanced with EAM capabilities. The evaluation was performed by a focus group of enterprise architects that attended a workshop and applied the tool to an EAM case study.     Physical and Mechanical Properties of Cotton/Polyester Based Fibers for Shoe Uppers and Lining Products [1]

    The purpose of the study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of various textile materials based on polyester and cotton for shoe uppers and lining. For that purpose, the influence of the ratio of a mixture of cotton and polyester fibers on the quality of the fabric was investigated. As a result, fabrics with the same composition but different yarn numbers differed from each other in specified properties. With an increase in the content of polyester, all specified properties increase except for vapor permeability, which makes it possible to correctly select the composition of fabrics for shoes

    Diagnostic approach to reveal retroperitoneal injury during lumbar discectomy

    For decades, lumbar discectomy has been one of the most common surgical practices performed by neurosurgeons. Although it has proved to be an effective and safe surgical procedure, life threatening complications may occur in rare cases, including iliac artery and/or vein injuries, superior rectal artery injury, common iliac artery aneurysms, iliac arteriovenous fistula, intestinal injuries, and ureteral injuries. Ureteral damage during the lumbar L4-5 microdiscectomy was reported in a slim 50 year-old male patient. Because of a small amount of bleeding occurred during the surgery as soon as the patient came out of anesthesia, an angio-computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen was performed. It showed no hematoma and no major vascular injury, but air bubbles were seen in the retroperitoneal region, indicating that perforation had occurred. The patient was then monitored carefully for immediate and possible subsequent injuries, in this way; ureteral damage was found and repaired. This is perhaps the first such case report in the literature of the early detection of ureteral damage using an angio CT scan. If there is a suspicion of perforation of the anterior annulus fibrosus and anterior longitudinal ligaments but no indication for an emergency laparotomy, an abdominal angio CT done immediately after the surgery and an abdominal non-contrast CT 4 hours later will give sufficient information concerning the potential occurrence of nearly all the major complications associated with lumbar discectomy

    Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control Implementation of Team Mekar at the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge

    This paper presents the cooperative adaptive cruise control implementation of Team Mekar at the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge (GCDC). The Team Mekar vehicle used a dSpace microautobox for access to the vehicle controller area network bus and for control of the autonomous throttle intervention and the electric-motor-operated brake pedal. The vehicle was equipped with real-time kinematic Global Positioning System (RTK GPS) and an IEEE 802.11p modem installed in an onboard computer for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication. The Team Mekar vehicle did not have an original-equipment-manufacturer-supplied adaptive cruise control (ACC). ACC/Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) based on V2V-communicated GPS position/velocity and preceding vehicle acceleration feedforward were implemented in the Team Mekar vehicle. This paper presents experimental and simulation results of the Team Mekar CACC implementation, along with a discussion of the problems encountered during the GCDC cooperative mobility runs

    Metamodel-Based Analysis of Domain-Specific Conceptual Modeling Methods

    Part 4: Reviews and Analyses of Modeling MethodsInternational audienceMetamodels play a pivotal role in conceptual modeling as they manifest the abstraction level applied when creating conceptual models. Consequently, design decisions made by the metamodel developer determine utility, capabilities, and expressiveness of the conceptual modeling language - and eventually the created models. However, only limited research defines and applies metrics for analyzing the structure and capabilities of a metamodel, and eventually support the development of new metamodels. This not only concerns general-purpose modeling languages, but also domain-specific ones, which usually undergo shorter update cycles. The paper at hand introduces a generic analysis framework to syntactically analyze modeling languages. The framework is applied to 40 metamodels of domain-specific conceptual modeling languages (DSML). This research establishes a foundation to support metamodel development in the future. The contribution of this paper is threefold: (i) an analysis framework for conceptual modeling method metamodels is proposed, (ii) results from applying this framework to 40 ADOxx-based DSML metamodels are presented, and (iii) a human-based reasoning after comparison of these results with Ecore-based metamodels is conducted

    Alibaba: Jack Ma's unique growth strategy and the future of its global development in the Chinese digital business industry

    China’s B2B businesses have gained immensely from the surge in social media users—with Alibaba, who have been at the forefront of the movement, benefitting the greatest. When compared to typical Western B2B companies, Alibaba has pursued a unique growth strategy—in line with the Chinese business ethos, through maintaining strong relations with the government as well as their gradual transition into the manufacturing sector. This research will therefore investigate Alibaba’s growth strategies through the lens of Chinese traditional norms to discern whether their development phases are exclusive to Alibaba, or whether it can be emulated by emerging e-commerce firms, also. Thus, Alibaba’s early business decisions will be compared to that of their Western digital business counterparts, analysing which factors shaped their successes, whether it be their development strategies or Ma’s own persona. Ultimately, Alibaba’s global status in the e-commerce industry going forward will be assessed to determine the relative likelihood of their future growth initiatives—addressing in the process whether their standing as the global leader of online business is temporary or whether it will fundamentally change the course of the industry
