A critical force constant of the structural phase transition in quartz
Long wavelength optical phonons of quartz were analyzed by a Born-Von Karman model not previously used. It was found that only one force constant associated with the turning of the Si-O bonds has a critical effect on the soft-mode frequency and the α-ÎČ transition in quartz. The square of the soft-mode frequency was found to depend linearly on this force constant which has the temperature dependence K(T)= -5.33+225.3x10-4(851-T)2/3 in units of 104 dyn/cm2
First evidence of cryptotephra in palaeoenvironmental records associated with Norse occupation sites in Greenland
The Norse/Viking occupation of Greenland is part of a dispersal of communities across the North Atlantic coincident with the supposed Medieval Warm Period of the late 1st millennium AD. The abandonment of the Greenland settlements has been linked to climatic deterioration in the Little Ice Age as well as other possible explanations. There are significant dating uncertainties over the time of European abandonment of Greenland and the potential influence of climatic deterioration. Dating issues largely revolve around radiocarbon chronologies for Norse settlements and associated mire sequences close to settlement sites. Here we show the potential for moving this situation forward by a combination of palynological, radiocarbon and cryptotephra analyses of environmental records close to three âiconicâ Norse sites in the former Eastern Settlement of Greenland â Herjolfsnes, Hvalsey and GarĂ°ar (the modern Igaliku). While much work remains to be undertaken, our results show that palynological evidence can provide a useful marker for both the onset and end of Norse occupation in the region, while the radiocarbon chronologies for these sequences remain difficult. Significantly, we here demonstrate the potential for cryptotephra to become a useful tool in resolving the chronology of Norse occupation, when coupled with palynology. For the first time, we show that cryptotephra are present within palaeoenvironmental sequences located within or close to Norse settlement ruin-groups, with tephra horizons detected at all three sites. While shard concentrations were small at Herjolfsnes, concentrations sufficient for geochemical analyses were detected at Igaliku and Hvalsey. WDS-EPMA analyses of these tephra indicate that, unlike the predominantly Icelandic tephra sources reported in the Greenland ice core records, the tephra associated with the Norse sites correlate more closely with volcanic centres in the Aleutians and Cascades. Recent investigations of cryptotephra dispersal from North American centres, along with our new findings, point to the potential for cryptotephra to facilitate hypothesis testing, providing a key chronological tool for refining the timing of Norse activities in Greenland (e.g. abandonment) and of environmental contexts and drivers (e.g. climate forcing)

Determinants of species richness in the Park Grass experiment
The Park Grass Experiment at Rothamsted in southeast England was started in 1856, making it the longest-running experiment in plant ecology anywhere in the world. Experimental inputs include a range of fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic manures) applied annually, with lime applied occasionally, and these have led to an increase in biomass and, where nitrogen was applied in the form of ammonium sulfate, to substantial decreases in soil pH. The number of species per plot varies from three to 44 per 200 m2, affording a unique opportunity to study the determinants of plant species richness and to estimate the effect sizes attributable to different factors. The response of species richness to biomass depends on the amount and type of nitrogen applied; richness declined monotonically with increasing biomass on plots receiving no nitrogen or receiving nitrogen in the form of sodium nitrate, but there was no relationship between species richness and biomass on plots acidified by ammonium sulfate application. The response to lime also depended on the type of nitrogen applied; there was no relationship between lime treatment and species richness, except in plots receiving nitrogen in the form of ammonium sulfate, where species richness increased sharply with increasing soil pH. The addition of phosphorus reduced species richness, and application of potassium along with phosphorus reduced species richness further, but the biggest negative effects were when nitrogen and phosphorus were applied together. The analysis demonstrates how multiple factors contribute to the observed diversity patterns and how environmental regulation of species pools can operate at the same spatial and temporal scale as biomass effects
Aspects of the FM Kondo Model: From Unbiased MC Simulations to Back-of-an-Envelope Explanations
Effective models are derived from the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with
classical corespins, which greatly reduce the numerical effort. Results for
these models are presented. They indicate that double exchange gives the
correct order of magnitude and the correct doping dependence of the Curie
temperature. Furthermore, we find that the jump in the particle density
previously interpreted as phase separation is rather explained by ferromagnetic

Ultimate sensitivity and practical performance of the tellurium photoconductive detector*
Calculations of the ultimate sensitivity and measurements of the practical performance have been made for the tellurium photoconductive detector. For the condition that detector sensitivity is limited by fluctuations of background radiation, the theoretical NEP (noise equivalent power) at the peak of spectral sensitivity ([lambda] = 3-4[mu]) was calculated to be 5.1 x 10-13 W. For the "best" tellurium detector the measured value of NEP was 3.1 x 10-13 W at the same wavelength and at the optimum chopping frequency. Quantum Kinetic Theory III: Quantum kinetic master equation for strongly condensed trapped systems
We extend quantum kinetic theory to deal with a strongly Bose-condensed
atomic vapor in a trap. The method assumes that the majority of the vapor is
not condensed, and acts as a bath of heat and atoms for the condensate. The
condensate is described by the particle number conserving Bogoliubov method
developed by one of the authors. We derive equations which describe the
fluctuations of particle number and phase, and the growth of the Bose-Einstein
condensate. The equilibrium state of the condensate is a mixture of states with
different numbers of particles and quasiparticles. It is not a quantum
superposition of states with different numbers of particles---nevertheless, the
stationary state exhibits the property of off-diagonal long range order, to the
extent that this concept makes sense in a tightly trapped condensate.Comment: 3 figures submitted to Physical Review
Lepton Flavor Violation in Z and Lepton Decays in Supersymmetric Models
The observation of charged lepton flavor non-conservation would be a clear
signature of physics beyond the Standard Model. In particular, supersymmetric
(SUSY) models introduce mixings in the sneutrino and the charged slepton
sectors which could imply flavor-changing processes at rates accessible to
upcoming experiments. In this paper we analyze the possibility to observe Z -->
lep_I lep_J in the GigaZ option of TESLA at DESY. We show that although models
with SUSY masses above the current limits could predict a branching ratio BR(Z
--> mu e) accessible to the experiment, they would imply an unobserved rate of
mu --> e gamma and thus are excluded. In models with a small mixing angle
between the first and the third (or the second and the third) slepton families
GigaZ could observe Z --> tau mu (or Z --> tau e) consistently with present
bounds on lep_J --> lep_I gamma. In contrast, if the mixing angles between the
three slepton families are large the bounds from mu --> e gamma push these
processes below the reach of GigaZ. We show that in this case the masses of the
three slepton families must be strongly degenerated (with mass differences of
order 10^{-3}). We update the limits on the slepton mass insertions
delta_{LL,RR,LR} and discuss the correlation between flavor changing and g_mu-2

Reevaluation of the role of nuclear uncertainties in experiments on atomic parity violation with isotopic chains
In light of new data on neutron distributions from experiments with
antiprotonic atoms [ Trzcinska {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 082501
(2001)], we reexamine the role of nuclear-structure uncertainties in the
interpretation of measurements of parity violation in atoms using chains of
isotopes of the same element. With these new nuclear data, we find an
improvement in the sensitivity of isotopic chain measurements to ``new
physics'' beyond the standard model. We compare possible constraints on ``new
physics'' with the most accurate to date single-isotope probe of parity
violation in the Cs atom. We conclude that presently isotopic chain experiments
employing atoms with nuclear charges Z < 50 may result in more accurate tests

Differential iron requirements for osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation
Bone marrow mesenchymal progenitor cells are precursors for various cell types including osteoblasts, adipocytes, and chondrocytes. The external environment and signals act to direct the pathway of differentiation. Importantly, situations such as aging and chronic kidney disease display alterations in the balance of osteoblast and adipocyte differentiation, adversely affecting bone integrity. Iron deficiency, which can often occur during aging and chronic kidney disease, is associated with reduced bone density. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of iron deficiency on the capacity of progenitor cell differentiation pathways. Mouse and human progenitor cells, differentiated under standard osteoblast and adipocyte protocols in the presence of the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO), were used. Under osteogenic conditions, 5ΌM DFO significantly impaired expression of critical osteoblast genes, including osteocalcin, type 1 collagen, and dentin matrix protein 1. This led to a reduction in alkaline phosphatase activity and impaired mineralization. Despite prolonged exposure to chronic iron deficiency, cells retained viability as well as normal hypoxic responses with significant increases in transferrin receptor and protein accumulation of hypoxia inducible factor 1α. Similar concentrations of DFO were used when cells were maintained in adipogenic conditions. In contrast to osteoblast differentiation, DFO modestly suppressed adipocyte gene expression of peroxisome-proliferating activated receptor gamma, lipoprotein lipase, and adiponectin at earlier time points with normalization at later stages. Lipid accumulation was also similar in all conditions. These data suggest the critical importance of iron in osteoblast differentiation, and as long as the external stimuli are present, iron deficiency does not impede adipogenesis. © 2021 The Authors. Supersymmetric Relations Among Electromagnetic Dipole Operators
Supersymmetric contributions to all leptonic electromagnetic dipole operators
have essentially identical diagramatic structure. With approximate slepton
universality this allows the muon anomalous magnetic moment to be related to
the electron electric dipole moment in terms of supersymmetric phases, and to
radiative flavor changing lepton decays in terms of small violations of slepton
universality. If the current discrepancy between the measured and Standard
Model values of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to supersymmetry, the
current bound on the electron electric dipole moment then implies that the
phase of the electric dipole operator is less than . Likewise
the current bound on decay implies that the fractional
selectron-smuon mixing in the left-left mass squared matrix, \delta m_{\smuon
\selectron}^2 / m_{\slepton}^2, is less than . These relations and
constraints are fairly insensitive to details of the superpartner spectrum for
