    The stability of buoyant bubbles in the atmospheres of galaxy clusters

    The buoyant rise of hot plasma bubbles inflated by active galactic nuclei outflows in galaxy clusters can heat the cluster gas and thereby compensate radiative energy losses of this material. Numerical simulations of this effect often show the complete disruption of the bubbles followed by the mixing of the bubble material with the surrounding cluster gas due to fluid instabilities on the bubble surface. This prediction is inconsistent with the observations of apparently coherent bubble structures in clusters. We derive a general description in the linear regime of the growth of instabilities on the surface between two fluids under the influence of a gravitational field, viscosity, surface tension provided by a magnetic field and relative motion of the two fluids with respect to each other. We demonstrate that Kelvinā€“Helmholtz instabilities are always suppressed, if the fluids are viscous. They are also suppressed in the inviscid case for fluids of very different mass densities. We show that the effects of shear viscosity as well as a magnetic field in the cluster gas can prevent the growth of Rayleighā€“Taylor instabilities on relevant scalelengths. Rayleighā€“Taylor instabilities on parsec scales are suppressed even if the kinematic viscosity of the cluster gas is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared to the value given by Spitzer for a fully ionized, unmagnetized gas. Similarly, magnetic fields exceeding a few ?G result in an effective surface tension preventing the disruption of bubbles. For more massive clusters, instabilities on the bubble surface grow faster. This may explain the absence of thermal gas in the north-west bubble observed in the Perseus cluster compared to the apparently more disrupted bubbles in the Virgo cluster

    This article reports the results of research regarding the farm-level implications for New York dairy producers of national mandatory supply control programs for feed grains and milk. The analysis is based on the proposed Harkin-Gephardt Bill which would authorize a mandatory supply control program for milk and the major supported crops. Representative farm budgets were constructed for a sample of dairy farms to assess the possible effects on costs and returns. Some farmers would gain, while others would not. The results suggest that dairy farmers who purchase all of their feed would be worse off, while farmers who grow grain would be better off under the proposed supply control program.Agricultural Finance,

    Experimental Study of Brittle Behavior of Clay Shale in Rapid Triaxial Compression

    The brittle failure behavior of an over-consolidated clay shale (Opalinus Clay) in undrained rapid triaxial compression was studied. The confining stress levels were chosen to simulate the range of confining stresses relevant for underground excavations at the Mont Terri Underground Research Laboratory, and to investigate the transition from axial splitting failure to macroscopic shear failure. Micro-crack initiation was observed throughout the confining stress range utilized in this study at a differential stress of 2.1MPa on average, which indicates that friction was not mobilized at this stage of brittle failure. The rupture stress was dependent on confinement indicating friction mobilization during the brittle failure process. With increasing confinement net volumetric strain decreased suggesting that dilation was suppressed, which is possibly related to a change in the failure mode. At confining stress levels ā‰¤0.5 MPa specimen rupture was associated with axial splitting. With increasing confinement, transition to a macroscopic shearing mode was observed. Multi-stage triaxial tests consistently showed lower strengths than single-stage tests, demonstrating cumulative damage in the specimens. Both the Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown failure criteria could not satisfactorily fit the data over the entire confining stress range.
