    Modelling the states of public client participation in public private partnership arrangements

    The degree to which a public client actively participates in Public Private Partnership (PPP) schemes, is seen as a determinant of the success of the arrangement, and in particular, efficiency in the delivery of the assets of any infrastructure development. The asset delivery is often an early barometer for judging the overall performance of the PPP. Currently, there are no defined descriptors for the degree of such participation. The lack of defined descriptors makes the association between the degree of participation and efficiency of asset delivery, difficult to establish. This is particularly so if an optimum effect is desired. In addition, such an association is important for the strategic decision to embark on any PPP initiative. This paper presents a conceptual model of different levels of participation that characterise PPP schemes. The modelling was achieved by a systematic review of reported sources that address essential aspects and structures of PPP schemes, published from 2001 to 2015. As a precursor to the modelling, the common areas of Public Client Participation (PCP) were investigated. Equity and risk emerged as two dominant factors in the common areas of PCP, and were therefore adopted to form the foundation of the modelling. The resultant conceptual model defines the different states of combined PCP. The defined states provide a more rational basis for establishing how the degree of PCP affects the efficiency of asset delivery in PPP schemes

    Factors influencing attendance to immunization sessions for children in a rural district of Ghana

    Improving immunization coverage is vital to promoting child health and reducing childhood diseases and deaths. In spite of being actively promoted as a major public health intervention for national development since the late 1970s, immunization coverage in Ghana remains low. We investigated factors that influence attendance to immunization sessions in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem District of Ghana. The major factors hindering attendance were poor knowledge about immunization, lack of suitable venues and furniture at outreach clinics, financial difficulties, long waiting times, transport difficulties, poorly motivated service providers and weak intersectoral collaboration. The timing of immunization sessions, length of prior notice to the community, attitude of service providers and fear of side-effects generally did not deter attendance

    Implementing commercial information exchange: a construction supply chain case study

Full details of this licence are available at: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/The concept of electronic trading (e-trading) has transformed supply chain interactions in many industries, yet little research explored its implementation by Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) supply chain firms. E-trading relies on commercial information exchange by supply chain partners which is generally adopted through intermediary technology partners (Hub Providers) to facilitate the accurate and timely communication of transactional data between buyers and supplier. A case study was conducted to explore the challenges and barriers to implementation of cross-firm commercial information exchange. The study primarily involved investigation of the interfaces between software development and organizational functions assisting with the electronic exchange of commercial information (eCIX) implementation. Findings from the case study show that implementation of commercial information exchange is not an easy task with several themes of factors to be considered during delivery of such projects, namely technical, coordination, integration and organizational. The study contributes to the knowledge and deployment of e-trading solutions within the context of AEC firms, and should be of interest to the practitioners contemplating similar project

    Financial determinants of credit risk in the logistics and shipping industries

    This study examines factors affecting the credit risk of global logistics and shipping companies using Altman’s Z-score and Ohlson’s O-score models. Panel data multiple regression analysis is conducted to evaluate the impacts of various financial ratios on credit risk for both industries and to assess their unique characteristics. We find that while credit risk is, on average, similar between the shipping and logistics industries, the variability in credit risk in the shipping industry is much higher. We also find that while both equity and current ratios have a significant impact on credit risk in both industries, return on assets and the quick ratio have the most significant impact on the logistics and maritime industries, respectively. There are slight differences in the determinants of credit risk when analyses are further segmented into different regions (i.e., Asia, EU, USA and Africa). This study introduces scientific models and recommends financial indicators for financiers to evaluate the credit risk of both industries, help improve decision-making, and minimize the probability of default by debtors
