Rotation of planet-harbouring stars
The rotation rate of a star has important implications for the detectability,
characterisation and stability of any planets that may be orbiting it. This
chapter gives a brief overview of stellar rotation before describing the
methods used to measure the rotation periods of planet host stars, the factors
affecting the evolution of a star's rotation rate, stellar age estimates based
on rotation, and an overview of the observed trends in the rotation properties

Ernst Freund as Precursor of the Rational Study of Corporate Law

Published in this context, Ernst Freund's little-known The Legal Nature of Corporations (1897) was an original attempt to come to terms with a new legal and economic reality. But it can also be described, to paraphrase Oliver Wendell Holmes, as the earliest example of the rational study of corporate law. The paper shows that Freund had the intuitions of an institutional economist, and engaged in what today would be called comparative institutional analysis. Remarkably, his argument that the corporate form secures property against insider defection and against outsiders anticipated recent work on entity shielding and capital lock-in, and can be read as an early contribution to what today would be called the theory of the firm.Peer reviewe
The Astropy Problem
The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, "a community
effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster
interoperability between Python astronomy packages." For five years this
project has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots,
self-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by
the majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has
always been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors
receive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now
critical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible
solutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the
sustainability of general purpose astronomical software
The Canadian VirusSeq Data Portal & Duotang: open resources for SARS-CoV-2 viral sequences and genomic epidemiology
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a large global effort to sequence SARS-CoV-2
genomes from patient samples to track viral evolution and inform public health
response. Millions of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences have been deposited in global
public repositories. The Canadian COVID-19 Genomics Network (CanCOGeN -
VirusSeq), a consortium tasked with coordinating expanded sequencing of
SARS-CoV-2 genomes across Canada early in the pandemic, created the Canadian
VirusSeq Data Portal, with associated data pipelines and procedures, to support
these efforts. The goal of VirusSeq was to allow open access to Canadian
SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and enhanced, standardized contextual data that
were unavailable in other repositories and that meet FAIR standards (Findable,
Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). The Portal data submission pipeline
contains data quality checking procedures and appropriate acknowledgement of
data generators that encourages collaboration. Here we also highlight Duotang,
a web platform that presents genomic epidemiology and modeling analyses on
circulating and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants in Canada. Duotang presents
dynamic changes in variant composition of SARS-CoV-2 in Canada and by province,
estimates variant growth, and displays complementary interactive
visualizations, with a text overview of the current situation. The VirusSeq
Data Portal and Duotang resources, alongside additional analyses and resources
computed from the Portal (COVID-MVP, CoVizu), are all open-source and freely
available. Together, they provide an updated picture of SARS-CoV-2 evolution to
spur scientific discussions, inform public discourse, and support communication
with and within public health authorities. They also serve as a framework for
other jurisdictions interested in open, collaborative sequence data sharing and
analyses
The population genomic legacy of the second plague pandemic
Human populations have been shaped by catastrophes that may have left long-lasting signatures in their genomes. One notable example is the second plague pandemic that entered Europe in ca. 1,347 CE and repeatedly returned for over 300 years, with typical village and town mortality estimated at 10%–40%.1 It is assumed that this high mortality affected the gene pools of these populations. First, local population crashes reduced genetic diversity. Second, a change in frequency is expected for sequence variants that may have affected survival or susceptibility to the etiologic agent (Yersinia pestis).2 Third, mass mortality might alter the local gene pools through its impact on subsequent migration patterns. We explored these factors using the Norwegian city of Trondheim as a model, by sequencing 54 genomes spanning three time periods: (1) prior to the plague striking Trondheim in 1,349 CE, (2) the 17th–19th century, and (3) the present. We find that the pandemic period shaped the gene pool by reducing long distance immigration, in particular from the British Isles, and inducing a bottleneck that reduced genetic diversity. Although we also observe an excess of large FST values at multiple loci in the genome, these are shaped by reference biases introduced by mapping our relatively low genome coverage degraded DNA to the reference genome. This implies that attempts to detect selection using ancient DNA (aDNA) datasets that vary by read length and depth of sequencing coverage may be particularly challenging until methods have been developed to account for the impact of differential reference bias on test statistics.publishedVersio
The Early Royal Society and Visual Culture
Recent studies have fruitfully examined the intersection between early modern science and visual culture by elucidating the functions of images in shaping and disseminating scientific knowledge. Given its rich archival sources, it is possible to extend this line of research in the case of the Royal Society to an examination of attitudes towards images as artefacts –manufactured objects worth commissioning, collecting and studying. Drawing on existing scholarship and material from the Royal Society Archives, I discuss Fellows’ interests in prints, drawings, varnishes, colorants, images made out of unusual materials, and methods of identifying the painter from a painting. Knowledge of production processes of images was important to members of the Royal Society, not only as connoisseurs and collectors, but also as those interested in a Baconian mastery of material processes, including a “history of trades”. Their antiquarian interests led to discussion of painters’ styles, and they gradually developed a visual memorial to an institution through portraits and other visual records.AH/M001938/1 (AHRC
