    Perceptions of New Member Academic Engagement: A Mixed Methods Case Study

    A mixed methods case study was conducted to triangulate a comprehensive assessment of the perceptions of fraternity/sorority life from three different stakeholders on a liberal arts campus. Three electronic surveys were sent to selected groups that asked respondents to provide perceptions of the academic engagement of affiliated students on the campus. In addition, affiliated student’s grade point averages were monitored across three semesters to determine if there was a marked change in academic performance while going through the new member education process. Results showed that new member academic performance was similar across the semester prior to, during, and after the new member experience. Survey results showed differences in perception of affiliated students’ academic engagement by group surveyed, and provided sources of common interest to promote greater understanding between stakeholder groups

    Spiritual Values Among Fraternity Men Compared to Unaffiliated Men and the Influence of Hegemonic Masculinity

    The article is based on the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity’s 2009 Adele Williamson Outstanding Masters Research Award winning thesis entitled, “Student Spiritual Development Associated with Fraternity Affiliation.” Using data (n = 1,211) from the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) 2003 pilot survey instrument, College Students\u27 Beliefs and Values, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, this study examined the relationship between fraternity affiliation, hegemonic masculinity, spirituality, religion, and other associated spiritual/religious factors. Significant differences were found regarding measures of spirituality and associated beliefs and values between fraternity-affiliated and non-affiliated participants, as well as respondents’ relative levels of hegemonic masculinity. Discussion and implications for practice offer consideration for practitioners and fraternity advisors with enhancing local chapter programming, creating new programs, or finding ways of reinforcing college fraternal organizations’ core values, particularly as they address issues of spirituality and personal religious growth, and a healthy conception of manhood

    A comparison of sexually assaultive, coercive, and non-aggressive college men

    This study compares local prevalance rates of college male sexual aggression with those established nationally, and explores variables that may contribute to the development of sexually aggressive college men. A survey of 1682 (M = 619, W = 983) undergraduate students from a mid-sized university revealed rates similar to those found by a national study. Results of discriminant analysis indicated that sexually aggressive men were likely to have more sexual partners, to have been victims of childhood sexual and / or physical abuse, to have had their first sexual intercourse at an earlier age, and to have engaged in higher levels of voluntary intimacy with women. Results are interpreted in terms of prevailing models of male sexual aggression
