    On explicit results at the intersection of the Z_2 and Z_4 orbifold subvarieties in K3 moduli space

    We examine the recently found point of intersection between the Z_2 and Z_4 orbifold subvarieties in the K3 moduli space more closely. First we give an explicit identification of the coordinates of the respective Z_2 and Z_4 orbifold theories at this point. Secondly we construct the explicit identification of conformal field theories at this point and show the orthogonality of the two subvarieties.Comment: Latex, 23 page

    Synchronization-based control for a collaborative robot

    This article introduces a new control scheme for controlling a robotic manipulator in a collaborative task, allowing it to respond proactively to its partner’s movements. Unlike conventional robotic systems, humans can operate in an unstructured, dynamic environment due to their ability to anticipate changes before they occur and react accordingly. Recreating this artificially by using a forward model would lead to the huge computational task of simulating a world full of complex nonlinear dynamics and autonomous human agents. In this study, a controller based on anticipating synchronization, where a ‘leader’ dynamical system is predicted by a coupled ‘follower’ with delayed self-feedback, is used to modify a robot’s dynamical behaviour to follow that of a series of leaky integrators and harmonic oscillators. This allows the robot (follower) to be coupled with a collaborative partner (leader) to anticipate its movements, without a complete model of its behaviour. This is tested by tasking a simulated Baxter robot with performing a collaborative manual coordination task with an autonomous partner under a range of feedback delay conditions, confirming its ability to anticipate using oscillators instead of a detailed forward model

    Ultrasound mapping of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases in patients with cutaneous melanoma: Results of a prospective multicenter study

    Background: Ultrasound (sonography, B-mode sonography, ultrasonography) examination improves the sensitivity in more than 25% compared to the clinical palpation, especially after surgery on the regional lymph node area. Objective: To evaluate the distribution of metastases during follow-up in the draining lymph node areas from the scar of primary to regional lymph nodes ( head and neck, supraclavicular, axilla, infraclavicular, groin) in patients with cutaneous melanoma with or without sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or former elective or consecutive complete lymph node dissection in case of positive sentinel lymph node (CLND). Methods: Prospective multicenter study of the Departments of Dermatology of the Universities of Homburg/Saar, Tubingen and Munich (Germany) in which the distribution of lymph node and subcutaneous metastases were mapped from the scar of primary to the lymphatic drainage region in 53 melanoma patients ( 23 women, 30 men; median age: 64 years; median tumor thickness: 1.99 mm) with known primary, visible lymph nodes or subcutaneous metastases proven by ultrasound and histopathology during the follow-up. Results: Especially in the axilla, infraclavicular region and groin the metastases were not limited to the anatomic lymph node regions. In 5 patients (9.4%) ( 4 of them were in stage IV) lymph node metastases were not located in the corresponding lymph node area. 32 patients without former SLNB had a time range between melanoma excision and lymph node metastases of 31 months ( median), 21 patients with SLNB had 18 months ( p < 0.005). In 11 patients with positive SLNB the time range was 17 months, in 10 patients with negative SLNB 21 months ( p < 0.005); in 32 patients with CLND the time range was 31 m< 0.005). In thinner melanomas lymph node metastases occurred later ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: After surgery of cutaneous melanoma, SLNB and CLND the lymphatic drainage can show significant changes which should be considered in clinical and ultrasound follow-up examinations. Especially for high-risk melanoma patients follow-up examinations should be performed at intervals of 3 months in the first years. Patients at stage IV should be examined in all regional lymph node areas clinically and by ultrasound. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Basel

    Design requirements and challenges for intelligent power wheelchair use in crowds: learning from expert wheelchair users

    An intelligent or smart power wheelchair is normally built on a standard power wheelchair with additional modules for perception, navigation or interaction purposes. It adds autonomy to the wheelchair and provides a technical solution to the safety concerns, thus opening the possibility for people who are considered not suitable to use a standard power wheelchair. Although the research in this field has been going on for decades, most of them focus on dealing with static or simple dynamic environments. In addition, the role of the user is sometimes overlooked during the design and development process. In our project, we aim to design a user-centred intelligent wheelchair and extend its application area to one of the most difficult scenarios faced by wheelchair users­, ­­navigating among crowds. As we start the process of designing a smart wheelchair, we present the results of an initial study with expert wheelchair users' to gain insights into their design requirements and challenges when navigating in crowds
