Technological Linkages, Market Structure, and Optimum Production Policies

    Get PDF
There has been an increased interest in the efficacy of industrial policy. We show that policy design for vertically-related industries hinges on the nature of market interactions as well as technological linkages. Using a model in which final-good producers realize productivity gains from increasing domestic specialization of intermediate processes, we find no theoretical basis for presuming that an imperfectly competitive intermediates sector restricts output below the optimal level or that the market produces too many varieties. The direction of distortion depends on the relationship between the extent of the external economy and the market power of individual intermediates producers. Optimal corrective policies require two instruments: an output subsidy and a lump-sum tax or subsidy. If only one instrument is available, it may be optimal to tax instead of subsidize the externality-generating activity.

The Synthesis of Anglo-Saxon and Christian Traditions in the Old English Judith

The Anglo-Saxons were a people who took great pride in their heritage and culture. However, they faced various challenges in preserving the pagan traditions of their Nordic ancestors while being heavily influenced by Christianity. Many Anglo-Saxon texts demonstrate these cultural challenges, but the Book of Judith, found in the Nowell-Codex, attempts to unify the two conflicting cultures by uniting Anglo-Saxon and Christians traditions in a distinctly Old English format. The Old English adaptation of the Latin Vulgate Judith text portrays the actions of the heroine in light of Christianity while incorporating deeply-rooted Anglo-Saxon traditions. Judith is the unifying figure within the story, because she exemplifies both Anglo-Saxon and Christian ideals. Judith\u27s dual characteristics create a picture of a unified Christian/Anglo-Saxon woman, whose morals, virtues, and heroic actions are reflected in the minor characteristics of the story. From the Old English writing style, to the opening feast, to the beasts of battle, to the collection of the spoils of war, the Nowell-Codex Judith is filled with traditional Anglo-Saxon imagery that creates a cohesive Anglo-Christian world for readers and listeners of the time to emulat

Weight loss intervention trials in women with breast cancer: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Obesity has been associated with poor health outcomes in breast cancer survivors. Thus, weight loss is recommended for overweight and obese survivors. We systematically reviewed studies (published up to July 2013) that evaluated behaviourally based, weight loss interventions in women with breast cancer exclusively. Completed randomized trials, single-arm trials and ongoing trials were reviewed. Within-group and between-group differences for weight loss were extracted, as was data on secondary outcomes, i.e. clinical biomarkers, patient-reported outcomes, adverse events. Ten completed randomized trials, four single-arm trials and five ongoing trials were identified. Statistically significant within-group weight loss was observed over periods of 2 to 18 months in 13 of the 14 trials, with six randomized and two single-arm trials observing mean weight loss ā‰„5%. Clinical biomarkers, psychosocial and patient-reported outcomes were measured in a small number of studies. No serious adverse events were reported. Only two trials assessed maintenance of intervention effects after the end-of-intervention and none reported on cost-effectiveness. The studies included in this review suggest that weight loss is feasible to achieve and is safe in women following treatment for breast cancer. Future studies should assess (and be powered for) a range of biomarker and patient-reported outcomes, and be designed to inform translation into practice

Industrial Real Estate Prices and Market Efficiency

    Get PDF
This study employs a multivariate Granger-causality procedure to examine causal relationships between selected economic and financial variables and industrial real estate prices. Empirical results indicate that relationships between several of these variables' lagged values and current values of price exist. We also find a significant relationship between past and current prices.

Generational Conflict, Human Capital Accumulation, and Economic Growth

Worldwide, dependency ratios are forecast to increase dramatically in the next 50 years. A great deal of attention has been devoted to understanding the changes in fiscal policies that must' take place to accommodate these changes. In contrast, less effort has been concentrated on studying the fiscal shifts that will endogenously result from demographic pressures. An example of particular interest is the degree to which a more elderly population will support public spending for education. We use an overlapping-generations model to investigate the effect of this demographic transition on the endogenous determination of public spending for education. A demographic transition alters the identity of the median voter, leading to a preference for less education spending. If the public sector is inefficiently small, demographic transition exacerbates the underprovision of human capital. Alternatively, such a shift may trim an inefficiently large government, reduce tax rates and raise capital per worker enough to raise education spending. Thus, there is no automatic link between demographic transition and reduced support for those programs whose benefits are concentrated among the young.

Recent research investigated the relationship between physical factors and the asking price of industrial buildings. We extend prior research by including physical, locational, financial, and economic variables to determine the factors that influence the sales price. This research provides an initial valuation framework for appraisers and is a first step toward the development of an industrial property index. Eleven variables - building size, office space, dock doors, ceiling height, age, distance to the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, county of sale, industrial cap rate, prime rate, tenant type, and date of sale - are found to explain the sales price of industrial property.

Discordant localization of WFA reactivity and brevican/ADAMTS-derived fragment in rodent brain

Abstract

Background

Proteoglycan (PG) in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the central nervous system (CNS) may act as a barrier for neurite elongation in a growth tract, and regulate other characteristics collectively defined as structural neural plasticity. Proteolytic cleavage of PGs appears to alter the environment to one favoring plasticity and growth. Brevican belongs to the lectican family of aggregating, chondroitin sulfate (CS)-bearing PGs, and it modulates neurite outgrowth and synaptogenesis. Several ADAMTSs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs) are glutamyl-endopeptidases that proteolytically cleave brevican. The purpose of this study was to localize regions of adult CNS that contain a proteolytic-derived fragment of brevican which bears the ADAMTS-cleaved neoepitope sequence. These regions were compared to areas of <it>Wisteria floribunda </it>agglutin (WFA) reactivity, a common reagent used to detect "perineuronal nets" (PNNs) of intact matrix and a marker which is thought to label regions of relative neural stability.

Results

WFA reactivity was found primarily as PNNs, whereas brevican and the ADAMTS-cleaved fragment of brevican were more broadly distributed in neuropil, and in particular regions localized to PNNs. One example is hippocampus where the ADAMTS-cleaved brevican fragment is found surrounding pyramidal neurons, in neuropil of stratum oriens/radiatum and the lacunosum moleculare. The fragment was less abundant in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus. Mostly PNNs of scattered interneurons along the pyramidal layer were identified by WFA. In lateral thalamus, the reticular thalamic nucleus stained abundantly with WFA whereas ventral posterior nuclei were markedly immunopositive for ADAMTS-cleaved brevican. Using Western blotting techniques, no common species were reactive for brevican and WFA.

Conclusion

In general, a marked discordance was observed in the regional localization between WFA and brevican or the ADAMTS-derived N-terminal fragment of brevican. Functionally, this difference may correspond to regions with varied prevalence for neural stability/plasticity.</p

SKS Splitting Beneath Mount St. Helens: Constraints on Subslab Mantle Entrainment

Observations of seismic anisotropy can provide direct constraints on the character of mantleflow in subduction zones, critical for our broader understanding of subduction dynamics. Here wepresent over 750 new SKS splitting measurements in the vicinity of Mount St. Helens in the Cascadiasubduction zone using a combination of stations from the iMUSH broadband array and Cascades VolcanoObservatory network. This provides the highest density of splitting measurements yet available inCascadia, acting as a focusedā€œtelescopeā€for seismic anisotropy in the subduction zone. We retrieve spatiallyconsistent splitting parameters (mean fast directionĪ¦: 74Ā°, mean delay timeāˆ‚t: 1.0 s) with the azimuthaloccurrence of nulls in agreement with the fast direction of splitting. When averaged across the array, a90Ā° periodicity in splitting parameters as a function of back azimuth is revealed, which has not beenrecovered previously with singleā€station observations. The periodicity is characterized by a sawtooth patterninĪ¦with a clearly defined 45Ā° trend. We present new equations that reproduce this behavior based uponknown systematic errors when calculating shear wave splitting from data with realistic seismic noise. The corrected results suggest a single layer of anisotropy with an ENEā€WSW fast axis parallel to the motionof the subducting Juan de Fuca plate; in agreement with predictions for entrained subslab mantleflow. Thesplitting pattern is consistent with that seen throughout Cascadia, suggesting that entrainment of theunderlying asthenosphere with the subducting slab is coherent and widespread. The broadband seismic component of the iMUSH project was supported by National Science Foundation grants EARā€1144568, EARā€1144351, EARā€1460291, and EARā€1444275.
