A newborn with moderate hemophilia A with severe intracranial and extracranial hemorrhage: A case report

Intracranial hemorrhage among term newborns is a rare clinical condition with high morbidity and mortality. Although major bleeding is relatively uncommon, the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage in hemophilic children is higher during the first few days of life than at any other stage in childhood, which relates to the trauma of delive ry. Here, we reported a newborn case diagnosed with moderate hemophilia A, without the presence of a positive family history of hemophilia and presenting with intracranial and extracranial hemorrhage and we aimed to emphasize that the early diagnosis and replacement therapy carries an essential importance

THE EFFECT OF HEPARIN ON THE CELL CYCLE IN HUMAN B-LYMPHOBLASTS: AN IN VITRO STUDY

Heparin has an apoptotic effect in addition to its anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and antiproliferative effects. In this study, we detected the effect of heparin on the cell cycle of lymphoblasts by flow cytometry (FCM) and tried to determine which phase in the cell cycle of lymphoblasts contains heparin-sensitive points. Twelve children with newly diagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) were included in the study. Lymphoblasts were incubated in different levels of heparin concentrations (0, 10, and 20 U/mL) and the percentages of lymphoblasts at each phase of the cell cycle were simultaneously measured by FCM at 0, 1, and 2 hours (h). The percentages of lymphoblasts at the G2/M and S phases were significantly increased in 20 U/mL heparin concentration compared to 0 U/mL heparin concentration at 1h (from 1.18% to 10.21% and from 1.03% to 13.63%, respectively; p<0.000), indicating an arrest of cell cycle at the G2/M and S phases by heparin. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanism of the apoptotic effect of heparin.

Augmented mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase activity in children with iron deficiency: a tandem between iron and copper?

    No full text
Introduction: Dyshomeostasis of essential trace elements including iron and copper plays a key role in the pathogenesis of a myriad of serious conditions including iron deficiency (ID) anemia, in which impaired cellular energy metabolism is prominent. Although experimental studies documented decreased activity of cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx) in ID, there are not enough clinical data. The present study was conducted to determine serum copper levels and activity of mitochondrial CytOx in isolated lymphocytes of patients with iron deficiency. Material and methods: A total of 210 cases (2-17 years) were included in this prospective study. Serum iron and copper levels were measured. According to the serum iron levels, patients were allocated to iron deficient (ID, n = 70) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA, n = 70) groups, and iron-sufficient participants were allocated to the control group (n = 70). Activity of CytOx in the circulating lymphocytes was colorimetrically measured and compared with the controls. Results: The CytOx activity was significantly higher in the IDA (2.9 ±1.2 mOD/min, n = 62) group compared to the control group (2.4 ±1.3 mOD/ min, n = 68, p < 0.001). Interestingly, serum copper levels were significantly higher in both the ID (106.9 ±55.5 µg/dl, n = 64, p = 0.0001) and IDA (115.1 ±50.2 µg/dl, n = 59, p = 0.0001) groups than the control group (72.1 ±46.7 µg/dl, n = 69). Conclusions: Higher serum copper levels in patients with IDA implicate co-operative interaction between these trace elements. The elevated CytOx activity in patients with IDA is probably secondary to the normal/elevated serum copper levels

Cerebral venous thrombosis occurring during oxymetholone therapy

    No full text
Oxymetholone, an androgen analogue, is widely used in the treatment of Fanconi aplastic anemia (FAA). Androgen is known to cause cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). A 9-year-old girl under monitoring with a diagnosis of FAA presented to our hospital with severe headache. She had been receiving oxymetholone therapy for 1 year. Neurological examination was normal. Superior sagittal sinus thrombosis was detected at magnetic resonance imagining (MRI) of the brain. The thrombosis was thought to be oxymetholone-related, and oxymetholone therapy was discontinued. The patient was started on enoxoparin therapy and the symptoms resolved. Control images 4 months later were normal. We think that the risk of venous thrombosis must be considered with administering oxymetholone therapy in patients with FAA. [Med-Science 2017; 6(3.000): 576-8
