    WriteSim TCExam - An open source text simulation environment for training novice researchers in scientific writing

    BACKGROUND: The ability to write clearly and effectively is of central importance to the scientific enterprise. Encouraged by the success of simulation environments in other biomedical sciences, we developed WriteSim TCExam, an open-source, Web-based, textual simulation environment for teaching effective writing techniques to novice researchers. We shortlisted and modified an existing open source application - TCExam to serve as a textual simulation environment. After testing usability internally in our team, we conducted formal field usability studies with novice researchers. These were followed by formal surveys with researchers fitting the role of administrators and users (novice researchers) RESULTS: The development process was guided by feedback from usability tests within our research team. Online surveys and formal studies, involving members of the Research on Research group and selected novice researchers, show that the application is user-friendly. Additionally it has been used to train 25 novice researchers in scientific writing to date and has generated encouraging results. CONCLUSION: WriteSim TCExam is the first Web-based, open-source textual simulation environment designed to complement traditional scientific writing instruction. While initial reviews by students and educators have been positive, a formal study is needed to measure its benefits in comparison to standard instructional methods

    Annual and seasonal movements of migrating short-tailed shearwaters reflect environmental variation in sub-Arctic and Arctic waters

    The marine ecosystems of the Bering Sea and adjacent southern Chukchi Sea are experiencing rapid changes due to recent reductions in sea ice. Short-tailed shearwaters Puffinus tenuirostris visit this region in huge numbers between the boreal summer and autumn during non-breeding season, and represent one of the dominant top predators. To understand the implications for this species of ongoing environmental change in the Pacific sub-Arctic and Arctic seas, we tracked the migratory movements of 19 and 24 birds in 2010 and 2011, respectively, using light-level geolocators. In both years, tracked birds occupied the western (Okhotsk Sea and Kuril Islands) and eastern (southeast Bering Sea) North Pacific from May to July. In August–September of 2010, but not 2011, a substantial proportion (68 % of the tracked individuals in 2010 compared to 38 % in 2011) moved through the Bering Strait to feed in the Chukchi Sea. Based on the correlation with oceanographic variables, the probability of shearwater occurrence was highest in waters with sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of 8–10 °C over shallow depths. Furthermore, shearwaters spent more time flying when SST was warmer than 9 °C, suggesting increased search effort for prey. We hypothesized that the northward shift in the distribution of shearwaters may have been related to temperature-driven changes in the abundance of their dominant prey, krill (Euphausiacea), as the timing of krill spawning coincides with the seasonal increase in water temperature. Our results indicate a flexible response of foraging birds to ongoing changes in the sub-Arctic and Arctic ecosystems

    The coding of olfactory stimuli across a wide range of organisms may rely on fundamentally similar mechanisms in which a complement of specific odorant receptors on olfactory sensory neurons respond differentially to airborne chemicals to initiate the process by which specific odors are perceived. The question that we address in this review is the role of specific neurons in mediating this sensory system—an identity code—relative to the role that temporally specific responses across many neurons play in producing an olfactory perception—a temporal code. While information coded in specific neurons may be converted into a temporal code, it is also possible that temporal codes exist in the absence of response specificity for any particular neuron or subset of neurons. We review the data supporting these ideas, and we discuss the research perspectives that could help to reveal the mechanisms by which odorants become perceptions

    The Emergence of Emotions

    Emotion is conscious experience. It is the affective aspect of consciousness. Emotion arises from sensory stimulation and is typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body. Hence an emotion is a complex reaction pattern consisting of three components: a physiological component, a behavioral component, and an experiential (conscious) component. The reactions making up an emotion determine what the emotion will be recognized as. Three processes are involved in generating an emotion: (1) identification of the emotional significance of a sensory stimulus, (2) production of an affective state (emotion), and (3) regulation of the affective state. Two opposing systems in the brain (the reward and punishment systems) establish an affective value or valence (stimulus-reinforcement association) for sensory stimulation. This is process (1), the first step in the generation of an emotion. Development of stimulus-reinforcement associations (affective valence) serves as the basis for emotion expression (process 2), conditioned emotion learning acquisition and expression, memory consolidation, reinforcement-expectations, decision-making, coping responses, and social behavior. The amygdala is critical for the representation of stimulus-reinforcement associations (both reward and punishment-based) for these functions. Three distinct and separate architectural and functional areas of the prefrontal cortex (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex) are involved in the regulation of emotion (process 3). The regulation of emotion by the prefrontal cortex consists of a positive feedback interaction between the prefrontal cortex and the inferior parietal cortex resulting in the nonlinear emergence of emotion. This positive feedback and nonlinear emergence represents a type of working memory (focal attention) by which perception is reorganized and rerepresented, becoming explicit, functional, and conscious. The explicit emotion states arising may be involved in the production of voluntary new or novel intentional (adaptive) behavior, especially social behavior

    Identification of Hsc70 as target for AGE modification in senescent human fibroblasts

    Cellular senescence is known as a potent mechanism of tumor suppression, and cellular senescence in vitro also reflects at least some features of aging in vivo. The Free Radical Theory of aging suggests that reactive oxygen species are important causative agents of aging and cellular senescence. Besides damage of nucleic acids and lipids, also oxidative modifications of proteins have been described as potential causative events in the senescence response. However, the identity of protein targets for post-translational modifications in senescent cells has remained unclear. In the present communication, we analyzed the occurrence of oxidative posttranslational modifications in senescent human endothelial cells and dermal fibroblasts. We found a significant increase in the level of protein carbonyls and AGE modification with senescence in both cell types. Using 2D-Gel electrophoresis and Western Blot we found that heat shock cognate protein 70 is a bona fide target for AGE modification in human fibroblasts

    Competency Assessment

    Assessment is an essential feature of the competency-based educational model because only by means of evaluation can we verify achievement of specified learning outcomes. This is especially important in the context of health professions education, where the competencies of interest impact the well-being of patients. Therefore, just as with planning the instructional component of a curriculum, development of an assessment system must start with the specification of desired learning outcomes in the form of knowledge, skills, and attitudes expected of trainees or practitioners in order to provide safe and effective patient care. Issues to consider when judging the quality of evaluation methods include the reliability of data generated by the assessment, validity of decisions based on test results, educational impact on individuals undergoing evaluation and other stakeholders, and the feasibility of implementing the assessment system. In addition to these criteria and the particular competencies to be evaluated, the choice of testing methods from among numerous available techniques should consider multiple dimensions, such as appropriate level of assessment, stage of learner development, and, very importantly, overall purpose and context of the assessment. Ultimately, no one method can assess all aspects of professional competence, but familiarity with strengths and limitations of various modalities can guide the development of appropriate assessment systems. Strengths of simulation-based methods for evaluative purposes include the ability to assess actual performance of psychomotor skills and demonstration of nontechnical professional competencies in environments that safely and authentically mirror real practice settings. In addition, the programmability of simulations permits on-demand testing of rare but important clinical situations and consistent presentation of evaluation problems to multiple examinees; this reproducibility becomes especially important when high-stakes decisions are contingent upon such assessments
