Shortest path or anchor-based route choice: a large-scale empirical analysis of minicab routing in London
Understanding and modelling route choice behaviour is central to predicting the formation and propagation of urban road congestion. Yet within conventional literature disagreements persist around the nature of route choice behaviour, and how it should be modelled. In this paper, both the shortest path and anchor-based perspectives on route choice behaviour are explored through an empirical analysis of nearly 700,000 minicab routes across London, United Kingdom. In the first set of analyses, the degree of similarity between observed routes and possible shortest paths is established. Shortest paths demonstrate poor performance in predicting both observed route choice and characteristics. The second stage of analysis explores the influence of specific urban features, named anchors, in route choice. These analyses show that certain features attract more route choices than would be expected were individuals choosing route based on cost minimisation alone. Instead, the results indicate that major urban features form the basis of route choice planning β being selected disproportionately more often, and causing asymmetry in route choice volumes by direction of travel. At a finer scale, decisions made at minor road features are furthermore demonstrated to influence routing patterns. The results indicate a need to revisit the basis of how routes are modelled, shifting from the shortest path perspective to a mechanism structured around urban features. In concluding, the main trends are synthesised within an initial framework for route choice modelling, and presents potential extensions of this research
A heuristic model of bounded route choice in urban areas
There is substantial evidence to indicate that route choice in urban areas is complex cognitive process, conducted under uncertainty and formed on partial perspectives. Yet, conventional route choice models continue make simplistic assumptions around the nature of human cognitive ability, memory and preference. In this paper, a novel framework for route choice in urban areas is introduced, aiming to more accurately reflect the uncertain, bounded nature of route choice decision making. Two main advances are introduced. The first involves the definition of a hierarchical model of space representing the relationship between urban features and human cognition, combining findings from both the extensive previous literature on spatial cognition and a large route choice dataset. The second advance involves the development of heuristic rules for route choice decisions, building upon the hierarchical model of urban space. The heuristics describe the process by which quick, 'good enough' decisions are made when individuals are faced with uncertainty. This element of the model is once more constructed and parameterised according to findings from prior research and the trends identified within a large routing dataset. The paper outlines the implementation of the framework within a real-world context, validating the results against observed behaviours. Conclusions are offered as to the extension and improvement of this approach, outlining its potential as an alternative to other route choice modelling frameworks

A network ridesharing experiment with sequential choice of transportation mode
Within the last decade, there has been a dramatic bloom in ridesharing businesses along with the emergence of new enabling technologies. A central issue in ridesharing, which is also important in the general domain of cost-sharing in economics and computer science, is that the sharing of
cost implies positive externalities and hence coordination problems for the network users. We investigate these problems experimentally in the present study. In particular, we focus on how sequential observability of transportation mode choices can be a powerful facilitator of coordination in ridesharing. Our study abstracts the essential issues of coordination in ridesharing into a directed network game with experimentally testable predictions. In line with the theoretical
analysis, our experimental evidence shows that even a limited extent of sequential choice observability might lead to efficient coordination. However, convergence to efficiency is slower with more limited

Super-resolution far-field ghost imaging via compressive sampling
Much more image details can be resolved by improving the system's imaging
resolution and enhancing the resolution beyond the system's Rayleigh
diffraction limit is generally called super-resolution. By combining the sparse
prior property of images with the ghost imaging method, we demonstrated
experimentally that super-resolution imaging can be nonlocally achieved in the
far field even without looking at the object. Physical explanation of
super-resolution ghost imaging via compressive sampling and its potential

Scallop swimming kinematics and muscle performance: modelling the effects of "within-animal" variation in temperature sensitivity
Escape behaviour was investigated in Queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis) acclimated to 5, 10 or 15 degrees C and tested at their acclimation temperature. Scallops are active molluscs, able to escape from predators by jet-propelled swimming using a striated muscle working in opposition to an elastic hinge ligament. The first cycle of the escape response was recorded using high-speed video ( 250 Hz) and whole-animal velocity and acceleration determined. Muscle shortening velocity, force and power output were calculated using measurements of valve movement and jet area, and a simple biomechanical model. The average shortening speed of the adductor muscle had a Q(10) of 2.04, significantly reducing the duration of the jetting phase of the cycle with increased temperature. Muscle lengthening velocity and the overall duration of the clap cycle were changed little over the range 5 - 15 degrees C, as these parameters were controlled by the relatively temperature-insensitive, hinge ligament. Improvements in the average power output of the adductor muscle over the first clap cycle ( 222 vs. 139 W kg(-1) wet mass at 15 and 5 degrees C respectively) were not translated into proportional increases in overall swimming velocity, which was only 32% higher at 15 degrees C ( 0.37m s(-1)) than 5 degrees C (0.28 m s(-1))
Analytic Lifshitz black holes in higher dimensions
We generalize the four-dimensional R^2-corrected z=3/2 Lifshitz black hole to
a two-parameter family of black hole solutions for any dynamical exponent z and
for any dimension D. For a particular relation between the parameters, we find
the first example of an extremal Lifshitz black hole. An asymptotically
Lifshitz black hole with a logarithmic decay is also exhibited for a specific
critical exponent depending on the dimension. We extend this analysis to the
more general quadratic curvature corrections for which we present three new
families of higher-dimensional D>=5 analytic Lifshitz black holes for generic
z. One of these higher-dimensional families contains as critical limits the z=3
three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole and a new z=6 four-dimensional black
hole. The variety of analytic solutions presented here encourages to explore
these gravity models within the context of non-relativistic holographic

Goldstone Fermion Dark Matter
We propose that the fermionic superpartner of a weak-scale Goldstone boson
can be a natural WIMP candidate. The p-wave annihilation of this `Goldstone
fermion' into pairs of Goldstone bosons automatically generates the correct
relic abundance, whereas the XENON100 direct detection bounds are evaded due to
suppressed couplings to the Standard Model. Further, it is able to avoid
indirect detection constraints because the relevant s-wave annihilations are
small. The interactions of the Goldstone supermultiplet can induce non-standard
